Role of the IG?

IG works for the “head of the establishment” Department Secretary Commander TAG ATAG-Army

Inspections… Are an evaluation that measures performance against a

standard and identifies cause for deviation Reinforce command priorities Identify systemic problems Proactively resolve issues

Advise Organizational Inspection Program (OIP) “Inspect what you expect”

Inspections should underscore command priorities

mission focus / readiness IG will make recommendations and will work with chain of

It’s against the Law (10 USC 1034) to take an Unfavorable Personnel Action (UPA) or Withhold a Favorable Action in reprisal for making a Protected Communication

BUT “nothing in AR 20-1 will dissuade commanders from taking timely and appropriate actions for legitimate reasons” (Independent Basis)

Reprisal (IAW 10 USC 1034): must have… 1. A Protected Communication 2. Personnel Action (Unfavorable or favorable

withheld)3. Responsible Mgt. Official Knowledge4. Motive (Justification & Timing are key)

Retaliation: Punishment or Act of Vengeance(Synonyms: retribution, revenge, requital, reprisal)

DON’T Overlook violations of Law, Policy or Regulation Restrict soldiers from reporting issues, concerns, violations Punish for reporting problems Be “Old School” (Firmness is fine…fairness matters too)

DO Encourage the full use of the chain of command Have an open door policy Hold soldiers accountable Share information (no info = rumors/conspiracy theories) Take action for appropriate, justifiable reasons
