Opatów is situated in the south-east of Poland in the region of świętokrzyskie. It is a little town on the Opatówka River.

Its population is about 6,3 thousand of people.

In the Middle Ages, our town was a settlement called Żmigród on the river, in the area of forests and lakes. The first mention of Opatów comes from the 12th

century. In 1361 the town received the status of a city with wide privileges.

History

For centuries, Opatów was an important regional center. In the 18th century, Opatów became home to a number of Greeks, who had escaped to Poland from Turkish occupation of their homeland. Prior to the Second World War, Opatów

had a substantial Jewish population.

The Warsaw GateIt was built in the 16th century. The gate was founded by the owner of Opatów Krzysztof Szydłowiecki. It is the only one remaining of the four gates which once towered over the town.
