Congratulations
• The OCO program has been a great force for progress in global ocean observations
• Congratulations to Mike Johnson, the OCO staff and all of you who have made the progress toward the initial global ocean observing system
• You have proven that the global upper ice-free ocean can be observed.

Moving Ahead w. Initial System
• Getting metadata and best practices and real time data transmission in place throughout the OS
• Documenting strategy and needs to sustain the global arrays
• Improving system management for the observing activities, both research and operational – “OPS Center”
![Page 4: OOPC Comments to OCO](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022082611/56812cad550346895d915d5c/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Products and Information
• A range of analyses are now available
“GODAE” type near real time (high-res)
“CLIVAR” type delayed mode (lower-res)
• These need to be examined, exploited and advice given about uncertainties and improvements needed
• The wider community of marine users will depend increasingly on these
![Page 5: OOPC Comments to OCO](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022082611/56812cad550346895d915d5c/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Interesting the wider community
• We have a lot of work to do to convince the world why continuing to invest in observing the subsurface ocean is important to them.
• There remains a great need for interesting ocean indices that can be related to surface climate or society
• How the subsurface ocean affects the surface ocean and prediction (weather and climate) needs to be communicated better
![Page 6: OOPC Comments to OCO](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022082611/56812cad550346895d915d5c/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Expanding the OOS
• Bring ecosystems and biogeochemistry communities into the global ocean observing system as quickly as feasible
• Re-evaluate the initial plan for physical and carbon variables and revise as appropriate.
• What about ‘sub-Argo’ ocean?• How to advance new generation satellite
and in-situ capabilities?

?Ocean09?
• A symposium to follow OceanObs99 has been suggested
• Goal would be to set the stage for the coming decade in the way that OceanObs99 did for the present decade
• Have to address utility to society, new technology, new opportunities.
• CLIVAR/OOPC/IMBER/??? As partners• Is this timely? If not ’09, when?
![Page 8: OOPC Comments to OCO](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022082611/56812cad550346895d915d5c/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Toward Ocean09
• Seasonal/Interannual forecast wkshop
• 2nd Ocean Reanalysis workshop Sept07
• Sensor workshop Ralf Prien late07?
• OSE/OSSE workshop Nov07
• Climate and Fisheries symposium mid-08
• What White Papers, a la OceanObs99, needed? How to organize and fund?
![Page 9: OOPC Comments to OCO](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022082611/56812cad550346895d915d5c/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
The Future?
• No rest for the weary!
• Must expand our product suite and our user base and broaden community interest and support
• Financial climate for sustained observations is not welcoming
• Beyond global-ocean-only…
