A new journalistic project is born

editorial- 5 -

Journalism is magical. If there is will, thrill, eagerness, and means are available it is possible to make your own project come true and create, after many weeks and months of hard job, a new digital magazine about soccer in the region of Osona. And this is what just happened. Thanks to those who have spent many hours working in this project, we can publish today this first edition of ‘Onze Metres’, and make it available for everyone. Let’s see how it has been possible. This journal is the result of, first of all, an end-of-degree project in Journalism major from Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona). The academic background has been very useful because it has allowed us to work with the tool provided by the university, to be helped and guided by professors and profes-sionals of the journalistic world, and last but not least, we have been able to take advantage from the continuous work methods to keep doing our work little by little, but not stopping. However, this project is not aimed to stay only in the university. It has helped us to start something new, and it is supposed to become a new media in the foreseeable future. What we expect from this magazine is to keep writing more editions about all what we have in front of our eyes, information about regional soccer, junior soccer, senior soccer, and make it readable to our readers. ‘Onze Metres’ has been made knowing our target and its informational needs. We want to cover them with our work and dedication. A work that has not existed in this region until we have started the magazine. The only soccer information in the region is the one given in traditional Medias, which cannot cover every single new from every single club, its players, and its institutions.

We would like to thank those clubs which have helped, understood and comprehended us and our independent, honest and rigorous project. Three adjective that should describe every journalistic project. To those clubs which have not answered us, we are always ready to

collaborate and establish a professional relationship. We also want to thank those people who have made

this possible, contributing with contents and implication in an external project. A contri-

bution that has allowed ‘Onze Metres’ to be more professional and to stay closer

to the soccer reality. Without them, this starting project would not

have existed. It would not have existed neither without the three editor of the magazine. The first member chose to do this project with eagerness, but knowing it was going to be his end-of-degree project. The second member chose the project to be part as his end-of-degree project, but focusing on the translation work. A work that has had to wait more than expected to come real. And the third member has been doing this as something further

as her academic duties, giving every second of her

life to the magazine. All the efforts on the project,

started on May 2013, have become seeable results. We are

very proud of them, and we will try to keep doing this. We have been

working for months, and that is true, but our goal is to look ahead and, little by

little, we want to be able to cover hot news and give them to our readers, who also are a part of the

journal. We hope not only you like and enjoy ‘Onze Metres’ as much as we do, but also that the relationship between clubs, players and readers with us will be as long, honest, independent, professional and journalistic as possible.

On the last soil of Osona

Bleeding knees, balls bouncing weirdly, irregular passes, lots of dust and bunches of dirty clothes. These are the images you can find in the everyday’s life of a dirt soccer field. A kind of field which might seem from the very old times. A kind of field which not many current players have been to because of the boom of artificial grass fields. But we can still find six small villages where they play and practice the whole week in dirt fields in Osona. Corcó, Olost, Sant Bartomeu del Grau, Sant Boi de Lluçanès, Sant Miquel de Balenyà and Viladrau are the six special ones that preserve the dirt and the chalk to draw the lines every day. Similar pitches, but with different needs and also different opinions about them, especially if we make a difference between the clubs with junior soccer – Corcó and Sant Miquel de Balenyà- and the clubs with a single team in Third or Fourth Catalan Division.

A poor strategy to recruit players

“We are unhappy to play in different conditions than others”. These are the striking words from the president of Corcó, Francesc Garcia, who complains about the difficult a dirt field means in order to have a football club in a village with only about 2000 inhabitants. Garcia says that “it is very negative for the club and we are worried, because we don’t know until when the boom of soccer will last, since we started with four teams and we are now nine”. A boom in danger due to the diversification of activities offered to kids that, for example, have some pavilions to practice other sports. “We would like to be able to attract boys and girls from other villages, but our facilities are not decent”, states Garcia. Actually, the president emphasizes the fact that

only in upper categories, never in junior soccer, people from other villages play for L’Esquirol. The ones from this village do not consider this problem as big as the ones who begin playing soccer. Sant Miquel de Balenyà’s attitude, on the other hand, is different. They also think that having a dirt field is a problem to attract new players, but its president, Ramon Bonet, says they accept this fact, plain and simple. “We have been playing in dirt fields the whole life and now you are a weirdo”, he says. However, sooner than later, the club will take a step forward and will leave behind an age of bleeding knees and threadbare balls. Before next season starts, construction works will be started to have an artificial field build in the sports area. A project that will enlarge the pitch thanks to a project led by the City Hall. Despite the support to green plastic and rubber, Ramon Bonet regrets about the fact that the innovation does not mean growing for the club, since they are still the seven teams they used to be. “We can’t grow further, we can’t keep up with everything, we have no more people”, says the president, pleased for the 100 players in his teams, some of them born in Sant Miquel de Balenyà, Tona or other villages like Vic or Hostalets de Balenyà.

Pradenc, the only team playing in an artificial pitch in Lluçanès

From all the teams in Lluçanès, only Pradenc has an artificial pitch, inaugurated on Spetember 11th 2008, almost six years ago. And it is also the only team that has junior soccer, by coincidence or not (eight teams from U8 to U18). All the other teams have to keep playing in their historic pitch: Olost, Sant Baromeu del Grau and Sant Boi de Lluçanès. Albert Sauquet, secretary of Sant Boi, says that “the only artificial pitch in the area is Prat’s be-cause it is the only team with junior soccer and, thus, they can afford it”. Other teams account on only a first team playing in Third or Fourth Re-gional Division, what make it difficult to spend money building new facilities.

REPORT- 7 -

No hope for a green future

2014/15 season will count on only five dirt pitches, after the one in Sant Miquel de Balenyà is finished. Viladrau might be the next one to take the step and change their dirt field for an artificial one. “The council has been struggling for an artificial pitch for the last four or five years, it is very close”, says the president Daniel Sastre, but he does not give an exact date.An aspect in favor might be the group of kids who practice every week but cannot play during the weekend because the pitch is a dirt one and they would only play with grass under their boots. The other teams say that it is hard to have an artificial pitch in a short term. Albert Sauquet, secretary of Sant Boi de Lluçanes claims it: “We only have one team and they play in our historic pitch. It is not only impossible to think about grass with no junior soccer but also understandable.”Climent Salvans, president of Olost, thinks the same. “We only have one team and the way things are going make you think it is impossible to anything. If we would have junior soccer, we might have some subsidy”. Back in 2007, Federació Catalana de Futbol said they were about to give ten million euros in subsidies in order to have artificial

grass in 102 pitches around Catalunya, a measure promoted by the Federació itself, the General Secretary for Sport in Catalunya and the bank La Caixa. It has to be said that all dirt fields in Osona belong to the corresponding City Hall, and so they are crucial when it is time to think about a green future concerning sports facilities. A curious case is Corcó, a team that not only needs to come to an agreement with the City Hall to leave the dirt pitch behind but also needs to talk to Ministry of Education, since

the field is shared with the school next to it. “The school says it is not positive [to change the dirt pitch for an artificial grass one], but the City Hall has never said they don’t agree”, says the president Francesc Garcia. “We had some chances when the subsidies boom occurred, but we didn’t do anything when it was time to”, claims Garcia. “We thought about building a new stadium, not only the pitch, but it was very expensive and we couldn’t afford it”, the president admits, who regrets the lost chance for the club and the l’Esquirol village some years

Disadvantages for visitors, the key for home Often, it is nicer to play in natural or arti-ficial grass rather than in dirt pitches. All the teams, without exception, agree with this fact. “It is a disadvantage playing in this kind of pitch because you never know where the ball will end”, says Climent Salvans. “It is an irregular pitch and, therefore, the soccer played here is more direct, stronger and with not many passes”, says Francesc Garcia. “Having a dirt pitch is negative if you want to feel the ball”, claims Toni Prados, Sant Miquel de Balenyà player in Fourth Catalan Divison. Both him and his teammate Ernest Rifà talk about the difficulties they have to struggle with when they play: “If it doesn’t rain, the ground is very hard and the ball bounces very high, and the more time you have played there more dust you have in the eyes”.Weather is another factor that directly affects the status of the pitch. When it rains, players can find puddles, it is hard to move the ball and, in some extreme situation, the match has to be cancelled. If it freezes, the pitch becomes too hard to play. Indeed, the players often have more bleeding injuries than the ones who play in artificial pitches. But “you get your knees bleeding when you tackle a player on the soil, but if you do so on the turf, you get burned”.But everyone agrees if they hear that even though it might be seen as disadvantages, a dirt field is helpful for those teams which are used to practice and compete there when they play as home. In other words, half of all matches.

“We know the pitch, and teams suffer here”, says Daniel Sastre, from Viladrau. “It is an advantage to play as home because all the other teams are used to play on grass, and you know you can’t let the ball bounce and that you have to start fighting for it from the very first minute”, says Toni Prados from his own experience in Sant Miquel de Balenyà. “Since most teams in Osona are used to play in grass pitches, it is always harder for them when they come to Olost”, says the president of this team. This does not mean a victory, but the original conditions to achieve it are in favor of the home team rather than the visitor one. And it does not only have to do with the dimensions of the pitch, or how the ball bounces, or how the players feel the ball. It is more than this, as the president of Corcó explains: “Going to play a game in l’Esquirol means going to lose it. Psychologically, the

fact of playing in a dirt pitch affects the players”. Most times, “it helps us because we practice and play there”, says Sauquet. The same happens when the teams have to think about the half of the games they play as visitors: playing in turf pitches might be a negative factor, even though the amount of artificial pitches is increasing in Osona.“We get tired sooner when we play as visitor, we are not used to do it, and we suffer more injuries”, says Francesc Garcia. Actually, this feeling is shared by most players: arti-ficial grass is heavier for players and, often, more severe injuries may happen because players’ legs might pin suddenly on the pitch and it has consequences on the movement of articulations such as the knee. Both Toni Prados and Ernest Rifà say that a player can feel the difference between surfaces. “The ball moves in a different way.

A pass on grass is not the same as one in on the dirt”, but not everyone agrees.“There is a huge difference when we play as visitor. Sometimes it is even better for us”, says Albert Sauquet from Sant Boi de Lluçanès. Olost’s president is also cogent: “It is not a disadvantage when we go play away from our pitch”.

Picturing a dirt pitch

Visitor teams don’t like the fact of having to play in a dirt pitch, and home teams know it. Both Francesc Garcia and Daniel Sastre confirm the diagnosis. “They make fun of us”, plain and simple. “I feel so with the kids and the parents who come for the first time. They don’t understand it, it astonishes them”, says Corcó’s president. Same situation. Different village: Sant Miquel de Balenyà. “We were asked, by people from Barcelona, where the pitch was, they didn’t get to understand that they already were there”, says Ramon Bonet. But it is not always the same.“No one likes to play in a dirt pitch, it’s annoying. But, since we’ve been playing here the whole life, nobody makes fun of us and they know what we got in Sant Boi” says Sauquet. Climent Salvans think the same. Visitor teams “don’t like it, but they know us so they know what they are going to find in Olost”.A mix made out from acceptation, resig-nation, and pride of those who play soccer on the dirt, as their ancestor used to do 20, 30, or 40 years ago. Who knows if, in the coming years, fields with no artificial grass, rubber, and an irri-gation system will be still working. Who knows if this will come true: every single dirt pitch will stay forever, especially if no junior soccer is played there.

- 9 - MANLLEU

The two sides of AEC Manlleu Manlleu ended a fair season,

in which has met the initial objective: the salvation. But it also has been a very unusual season. The team has given one of the worst images in its history playing as home, with a total of nine defeats in the Municipal field. A field that has usually been considered a complicated scenario in this category. On the other side of the coin there was the performance as visitor. Finally, the team ended in the tenth place in the ranking with a total of 50 points.

Relegation statistics in the Municipal

AEC Manlleu was the third worst team in terms of statistics as home during the whole season. Six wins, four draws and nine defeats that led the team to get only 22 points. They started really bad, with three defeats in a row in the Municipal. The first victory came against Europa in the 7th game. When it seemed to be alright again, the situation did not improve. Two more defeats and five consecutive games as home without winning, more doubts created. One of the turning points of the year came in the 14th game, winning against Vilassar in Manlleu. A victory that led the team to getting nice results, with four

wins in a row, which was cut with another lost game at home. It was almost halfway champi-onship when Jordi Dot’s team received Palamos and, even going ahead on the scoreboard, they ended up losing. The defeat was a hard blow to Manlleu, who still thought about a possible approach to the upper positions. From there on, the team faced the second round in order to recover, especially with an improved performance at home. In terms of figures, the number of points grew although it has been far from expected. A total of three defeats as home in the second part of the season, and some painful defeats as against Castelldefels, 2-3, in a game in which they had gone ahead twice and played with numerical superiority; or against Muntanyesa, 1-4. All these results have made the Municipal of Manlleu an easy field, something unexpected at the beginning of the season. The best version, far from home

What Manlleu has not win as home, they have as visitor. Except for the last games of the season the men of Jordi Dot had playoff numbers playing outside the region. Finally, seven wins, seven draws, and five defeats

that saw their heyday in the games in the first round, where they managed five wins and five draws at home. Surely, the two best remembered games of this season will be played as visitor: the victory in Sant Boi de Llobregat on the Catalunya National Day; the victory against Rapitenca, where the Manel Sala scored four goals; and the splendid victory against Nou Sardenya. In fact, Manel Sala was one of the keys of the season. 21 goals, some of them very beautiful goals, and the honorary title of top scorer in the category, shared with Ernest (who plays in Rubí) have been the oxygen for Manlleu during much of the year. Sala has scored 53% of the goals of a team where only six players have also scored. The second on this list is Sergio Ginés with five goals, and who has lost 10 league games due to an injury of

long duration. The new player, Uri Martinez, unfortunate with injuries, did find neither success nor enough consistency in front of goal. Fortet scored his first goal in the second to last game of the season, when everything was already made. However, it is noteworthy Manlleu’s great performance in defense, led by Archi throughout the season, and he only has made some occasional mistakes. 39 goals conceded in total is a smaller amount less than, for example, the one that has received the champion of the category, Cornellà. A season that made Manlleu people stay in the ground. After two consecutive years of excellence, almost promoting thanks to the promotion playoff, the team has met the basic goal of the season and has made it clear how difficult it is to be in privileged positions in this category.

Experience and personality. Òscar Gely has become the ex-tent of the bench in the field. He commands and solidifies the team. He has been playing catalan soccer for a long time, in teams such as Granollers, Cor-nellà, Europa, and Mataró. He is crucial in Manlleu, a team which need him to be there.

“In terms of defensive stats, we are a playoff team. We needed players who scored more goals”

“I can’t explain the lack of efficiency playing in our stadium, but we accomplished the season’s goal”

One remembers a lot of events after a season. A lot of moments. During the season, the team found itself, lost itself, and when they found them-selves again, they were lost in the middle of nowhere. Without a precise direction, the best version of Manlleu has been rarely seen. The last two years were full of joy, but this season they have been forced to keep their feet on the floor. And this will make the team grow. The most remarkable quality of the team is unification; even in the worst moments. The season comes to the end and all the players meet at the bar of the stadium to talk about the post-match. The last one of this season; and probably the last one for some of those in. Òscar Gely was waiting for us. He is the captain of AEC Manlleu and summarized the season. A weird season is ending. How would you define it?To most people, it has been an atypical season, mostly because we won a lot of games playing as visitor. However, the first goal of the team was to stay in our category, and we made it. Probably, a lot of people

expected a lot more from us, but in soccer, two plus two are not four. We know where we come from, everyone knows that the first thing we have to do is to keep the category. Of course we are not happy, but one has to life soccer year by year. Despite the irregularity, the team has not suffered to keep

the category. At some points, it seemed that the efficiency of the team was slight more regular. One could even think big. Where was the mistake? I cannot agree more about the irregularity. I think that two games have been crucial for the way of thinking in the team. The first was when we had been

winning four games in a row, and we were playing well. We played as home against Palamós. After 70 minutes, we were leading the game, but soccer is soccer, and we lost it due to two mistakes. If we would have won then, we would have been with the first teams in the ranking. The second game I talk about was against Castelldefels, also as home. They tied the game playing with 10 players; then we scored and took the lead again; and after that, they scored two more goals and beat us. Those 3 points, at that moment of the season and at a point where the team started to look again to the head of the ranking, are decisive. Unconsciously, the team sees the leading teams going far away from us, and that the chance to get them is gone. It is hard to understand the fact of losing 9 games in a pitch considered tough. Honestly, I cannot find an explanation. But it is also true that Manlleu has won more games as visitor as any other season before. Things like this happen because of no apparently reason; they are

- 11 - MANLLEU

surrealist. Even in the changing room some players said that our most recognizable treat, winning difficult games, had no effect this season. Perhaps the teams knew us better than ever.On the other hand, the team has won a lot of games as visitor: during the first half, you did not lose a single game. Manlleu has probably played better when the team did not have to take the initiative during the games. Yes, probably. We must be realistic, we are not a team which likes to have the ball possession for long whiles. Our game is to steal the ball, look for counterattacks. And we do have the players to play like this. I have been playing in this team for six seasons, and things have always been done the same way but with very different results. Sometimes, we think soccer is a logic thing, and it is not at all. One of the problems has been the ability to score. Has been this fact the reason for not being in higher positions in the ranking?I think so. You take a look at the statistics of the team, in terms of defensive stats, we are a playoff team. But if you look the offensive attack stats, when you get more goals rather than scoring them, you cannot expect anything else. No one has the magic wand to establish the amount of goals every player will score. Luckily, Manel scored 21 goals. His efficiency has been awesome. I have been playing soccer for many years, with very good players. But every

time someone scores so many goals, you think it is very hard. There were some points during the season when he scored every ball he touched. And Manlleu kept the category thanks to the goals scored by Manel. Òscar Gely started as a central defender. After a short time, he played as a midfielder, with both defensive and offensive tasks, and we have seen him playing even as a strike. Is Gely the odd-job man? Not the odd-job man. What I want is to play, and I do not care where I have to, wherever is needed. I may like some position more than others, but when I am on the field, what I want is the team to win. It is not about being an odd-job man. What has been the best during this season in Manlleu? The group of people. And the worst? The lack of regularity playing as home. A new era is starting in Manlleu now. After this season ending, it also time to say goodbye to Jordi Dot, the coach. The work carried out by Jordi, David Codina, and Martí Quer has been very good. When Jordi arrived here, his first time as first coach, he was supposed to make us win everything. He knew he would be in a team which played the playoff, and he took it with no fear but optimism. He is a very positive person, and he showed us so from the very first day he began. What Jordi wants is to enjoy the game and play nicely. And this is what we have been trying. Some times we did

better than others, but we were loyal to his style. Jordi Dot says goodbay, and Diego Morata says hello. How did the players take the news?Changes mean expectation. Some of the players had been with him a few years ago, but for those who do not know him, we will have to understand his ideas, talk to him, and see how things come. What do we have to expect from Manlleu for next season? The same as always: to keep the category. But we have to more regular as home.Is the same goal for the supporters than for the players? We, the players, always say that we want to play in Third Division (in Spain this is the fourth most important division). A village like Manlleu with a team in Third Division would allow people from around the country to locate it in a map. That would be awesome. We understand those who want more, and we also want more, but we do have to be realistic about what we have and what we do not.

Diego Morata will substitute Jordi Dot in the benchJordi Dot, who has been

in Manlleu’s bench the two last years, will quit at the end of the season. The coach, who quits due to personal reasons –despite the fact that the directors wanted him to stay— will be substituted for Diego Morata.Morata is now the coach of

Cornellà’s U19, and he was in Manlleu’s bench 11 years ago, with Jaume Torres as his helper. He is an experi-mented coach and he also has been the coach of the first Corenllà’s team; a team which promoted from Regional to Third Divisions on 2008. One of the qualities of this coach is that he trusts

in young players. With this news, an era is closed in AEC Manlleu. An era that will be remembered, mostly because of the promotion playoff, where they lost against Conquense. Dot, in his second season as coach, has achieved the intermediate positions in the ranking

After two years playing in Third Division, Vic got the relegation to First Catalan Division in the last game of the season. How do you feel about going back to this category? We think that it has been an adaptation season. It is always hard to start in a lower category after making many changes in the team, because it has an effect on the global efficiency of the team. It has been a crazy season: we have played very well at some points, but, in the other hand, we have been very irregular. However, we ranked in a correct position, taking into account the fact that we had never been before here as a team. Is the loss against Sabadell B the non-return point from which you cannot keep fighting for the playoff? I think so. It was at the end of the first half. We had won the four previous games. We were confident and a victory would have left us in a nice ranking position. But everything went wrong and we lost the chance. What has been your main lack? I would not say something particularly, but lots of tiny things. We began to be irregular

because we had to adapt to the new category, to new players… But injuries have been a crucial factor. It has been impossible to have all the players available. But not being in top positions is due to this fact. I insist, I think it is because of many tiny things. And why did all these injuries happen? If we analyze the injuries, they all have been traumatic injuries, not muscular. Thus, it has nothing to do with physical condition. We have been working hard to prevent injuries, and we did it with the muscular ones. Yet, traumatic injuries, such as broken bones or ligaments, have been harmful for us. And I do not really know the cause, but most of them have occurred in Vic’s pitch, our pitch. We all know how the turf in El Municipal is: there is more rubber than artificial grass. And I think that many of the injured players did not wear the suitable clays: they were too long. Plus, some players came from previous injuries, and the rehabilitation might not had been good enough. Anyway, the two main reasons have been the bud luck and the grass. And why did not you ask for a new turf? Because the fact of being injured due to the turf

is very serious. Yes, definitely. There are players who work or study during the morning, and they have had to ask for free days because of this. We asked for changes, and the board tried to go ahead, but this pitch is ten years old, and we can just do what we do. The solution would be to change it? Exactly, there is no other way.Do you think another factor are the losses against low-ranked teams?Yes, of course. We have fought against the first teams, but we did not against the ones in low positions. The good teams came to Vic to play nice soccer, and this let us make our soccer. We were able to play in the same conditions. But not-so-good teams came here trying not to get scored, and we have never been able to adapt to this situation. We have not been able to have the initiative. We do not know how to do it. The relegation of last season in the last game against Vilassar has had an effect in the team? How is the mental workload?Yes, definitely… The players who were in that team have been aware of this at the beginning of the season. Maybe not on the

They call him ‘Ramonet’. Not because he is very young but because most people remember him playing with the white and red shirt when he was a kid, still in dirt pitches. This defender is a part of team, and Vic would not be the same without him.

field. But it is a feeling you have. To achieve the promotion after ten years and, then, returning two years later is something you will always bring with you. And this might be the cause of the irregular begin, besides the adaptation, of course. The lack of fund has forced to count on fewer players and, most of them, very young. Some of them had not even played in amateur categories.Yes, this season has been like a learning year. The ones who have been in the club for many years have learnt things, and so have done the young ones. The have adapted to this amateur team, in a category played by players who doubled their age. And the old ones have learnt to work with young people and to share their eagerness. It has been a year full of experiences, in which everyone has learnt from everyone. Having young coaches have probably helped to make it easier to adapt for the youngers…Yes. Dani and Ramon are coaches from junior soccer, and they understand how the young players think, because some years ago, soccer was the only thing in their minds, but not anymore. And this is crucial to understand. They have been able to teach them values while they lead the whole team. They have

done a very remarkable job. What are the roles taken by each ones in the changing room? We, the veterans, who are three or four, have tried to lead the team, knowing their capacities. We are a young team, with players coming from junior teams and, thus, they have no experience. So we have had to demand more from them, in order they got to our level. We have been trying to lead them, but they have been able to do so by their own because they really

want to play soccer.Let’s talk about next season. What are your goals? Before thinking about goals, we have to wait and see how the club responds to the economic situation. These are hard times for Catalan soccer and we have to wait to see what the club decides to do next year: if they keep trusting in young people and the goal is to keep the category; or if they want to look for a star player. I guess it will depend on the economic situation. And what about your personal goals?I will listen to the club’s offer. But I want to say that I would love to continue in the club with the role I have: helping the club in whatever they need and supporting all the teams players. You do not know your next coach. But what you do know is that Ramon Mayo will be the technical manager. Have you talked to him? He was introduced to us in April. He told us that he would talk to the board of directors and would listen to their plan, both concerning the goals of next season and the budget. As far as I know, he has not begun to talk to the players because he has to choose the coach first. I guess after this is done, he will begin to talk to us.

Resignation because of a lack of agreement with the new technical manager

Dani Juvany announced his resignation on May 22th because he does not agree in many points with Ramon Mayo. Ramon Seco, the second coach, did the same. Both coaches denounce that Mayo has been planning on firing them at their backs. Here you can read the goodbye:“It hurts a lot, and we feel deceived. It is not acceptable that he was telling the players we would leave when we did not even know about it”, says the former coach. Ramon Carrascal will be crucial in the process of signing new players.

Vic ends its returning to First Catalan Division season discreetly

Not at the top. Not at the bottom. No promotion playoff. No relegation playoff. Unió Esportiva Vic has ended the season without option to fight for any goal. Its only motiva-tion has been to say goodbye to the category with dignity, in a year in which everyone in the club wanted it to pass by quietly. Last season relegation, in the last game in Vilassar, was the culmination of a group of nonsenses, which tired players, coaches, bosses, and supporters. And that’s why Vic faced the return to First Catalan Division knowing that this category is where they are supposed to be. And the season has probably followed the expected script: the will of playing nice soccer, option to fight for promotion for some weeks, and, at the end, ranking upper position. The beginning was sort of bipolar. From relegation to

promotion in less than 10 games. They only got two of the first twelve points and the ranked third to last. And, of course, after last year’s relegation, some ghosts started to appear. But soccer is a game based on spells, dynamics, and confidence, and these three elements become allies to Dani Juvany’s team from the fifth game on. This turning point shoot up Vic, which got 22 of the 30 point in the next games and got to the 3rd position in the ranking, four points behind Sabadell, the 2nd

classified. And here it is one of the factors that have marked the season: the defeats against teams in low positions in the ranking. Vic has been able to beat Girona B, Sabadell B, Montcada (who had not lost a game before), and even play a fantastic game against Peralada. But, on the other hand, Vic was defeated against Llefià, Farners, and Canyelles, teams

who ended up playing relegation playoffs. And, of course, loss after loss, Dani Juvany’s team saw how they got far away from the second position, which is often shared between Sabadell’s and Girona’s teams. Getting defeated meant to take a step back, and at the beginning of the second half of the season, the team only got three points out of fifteen. The defeats against Avià and Llefià –the second one won both games against Vic– put a very end to the option to fight for nice ranking positions and, with the relegation position far behind them, Vic realized that the 10 games left to play were non important games to play, in which only soccer dignity was at stake. The misfortune at the beginning of the second half of the season was incomprehensible, but the other crucial factors have been the injuries. The nursery of El Municipal has been always busy from the first third month of

competition on. Dani Juvany, the coach, has seen how only fifteen players out of twenty were available to play. Roger Casas and Pol Barnils say goodbye to the season due to ligament injuries before Christmas. After them, many other players have suffered injuries, some during many weeks, some others not that much, and have forced to keep changing the players’ display on the field. Not a bitter global, at the end of 2014/15 season. The fact that the last games have been of no importance does not mean Vic has been able to get over hard times. Dani Juvany has reaffirmed himself as the coach and has shown that it is possible to trust on soccer in this kind of category, where the pitches are small and the defenders are tough. And, above all, the team ranked nice positions, where they wanted to be, in a point in which the board of directors is preparing new projects to revitalize Unió Esportiva Vic.

2nd catalan division- 15 -

OAR Vic loses the category and Roda can still keep it

OAR Vic will play 2014/2015 season in Third Catalan Division. The team from Vic confirmed the relegation in Lliçà d’Amunt’s pitch when there left only one more game to be played. Roda de Ter, however, will have the chance to keep the category until the very last game in his first year in the category. To achieve it, they will have to keep the 13th position in the ranking in group IV, with Suria only one point behind them. Roda’s last game is against OAR Vic in OAR’s stadium. Knowing that the amount of teams rele-gating to Second Catalan Divi-

sion has to be the same as the one of the teams promoting to First catalan Division, everyone has to wait until the promotion games are played. If the three champions from the Barcelona group promote and two runner-ups do the same, fourteen teams will relegate to Third Catalan Division. But, if the runner-ups from Barcelona promote to First Catalan Division, the amount of relegated teams will increase up to sixteen. Thus, Roda’s goal is, besides keeping the 13th position, win as many games as possible. A fight that can imply twelve clubs. And

we will have to wait until some week after the competitions is over. A team with no chances to keep the category is OAR Vic, very irregular throughout the season. The team has not been able to take advantage from the new pitch, inaugurated last October. A lack of efficiency playing as home, only four games won during the whole season, and the lack of scored goals (the third worst scorer team) have condemned OAR Vic to be rele-gated to Third Catalan Division. A category where the team has never played in.

Coacher for the Third Catalan Division

Despite that the return of Miquel Muñoz as the coach of OAR for next season seemed assured, Miquel accepted the role of the second coach in Manlleu, with Diego Morata. Thus, the club from Vic does not know yet who the coach will be, even if they think about Marc Maideu.

Pau is ready for the next seasonTaradell’s player Pau

Sanmartín, who suffered an injury in the game against OAR Vic played on December 15th 2013, is recovering from his injury and thinking about next season. He is going back to practice sessions, but little by little, since he wants to “take it easy” to be ready for the beginning of next season’s prac-tices at his best.

Pau says that he “took the injury well, with happiness, because this is the best you can do”, even though he suffered an open fracture in his left leg’s ankle, his tibia and fibula were also fractured, and his tibia and astragal were displaced. He had to be operated that very same day, in the afternoon. “I fall, I raised my legs and I saw one of my feet in the opposite

way it was supposed to be”, he says, reminding the tackle he received. “The pain was not that bad, but it looked ugly”, he adds. But the recovery it is not only physical, notes the player. Further than the recovery sessions, up to two per day, he confesses that “you have to work hard psychologically talking”. A sacrifice that will allow him to enjoy soccer again in 2014/15.

3rd catalan division - 16 -

The relegation drama has affected two teams of Third Catalan Division, so far. Sant Vicenç de Torelló B and Gurb have not been able to keep their category, but more teams in group V are fighting to survive. The team from La Vall del Ges (Sant Vicenç), has paid the bad beginning of the season in the group IX. Actually, they did not win the first game until the played 9 games (4-2 against Almeriense, the last ranked). Albert Cunill, Sant Vicenç’s coach, admits that they have not in the same league. “There was a non-return point, the defeat against Almeriense in the second half of the season”. Thus, even after guaranteeing having a good enough team to be in middle positions in the ranking, “we deserve this place”. A crucial factor has been the ease to get goals. When there left only one game to be played, Sant Vicenç B had conceded 96 goals, only behind the last ranked in the category, with 100. But despite the disappoint-ment, “it is time to think about

the team we will have next year, with all the U18 players coming, to be in first positions”. Albert Cunill will not be in this new project, who will take a free year during 2014/2015 season. In group V, full of teams from Osona, Gurb has played well in defense, but not so well in attack: only 27 goals in 33 games, the worst stats in the group and an

insurmountable obstacle to be able to stay in Third Catalan Division one more year. Plus, 14 games without winning (from the 10th game to the 23th), only three of them tied, the team found itself in a difficult posi-tion. They did win the next three games, but it was not enough to get away from relegation posi-tions, with Sant Bartomeu del

Grau as reference. Both Sant Bartomeu and Seva have played 33 games and have 30 and 29 points each, but Seva would be relegated to Fourth Catalan Divi-sion. Voltregà is almost saved: they have 33 points and they have to play two more games. The only threaten is Ripoll, with 25 points and three more games to play before ending the season.

No teams from Osona in playoffs Not a single team from Osona

in Third Catalan Division will play the promotion to Second Catalan Division. Neither the ten teams of group V nor the two in group IX have been able to ranked second in their competi-tions, the position which allows playing the playoffs. The teams who got closest were Vic REFO A and Tona B, both in group V. They ranked fourth and fifth. Behind them, not a

single team has been able to fight for the only position to get the promotion. In group IX, the second position has been very far away from the two teams from Osona. However, Vic REFO B was the first in the ranking after two first games. But the four defeats in a row took them away, together with Sant Vicenç B, from the chances to play the promotion playoffs to Second Catalan Division.

4th catalan division- 17 -

Balenyà and Santperenca are already on Third Catalan Division

Athletic Balenyà and Sant-perenca will play next season in Third Catalan Division, as a reward for having been cham-pions of their respective groups of Fourth Catalan Division. A situation that, somehow or other, was expected from both teams before the start of the season. “We thought we were contenders, but we did not know how the category was,” says Jaume Serra, the coach of Sant-perenca. The team, however, began to believe they could have chances after having lost only one of the 14 games of the first half. Easier for Balenyà. According to his coach, Gerard Pallarès, after the nice season last year, it “was a goal” to achieve the top position. A good team and a couple of good players coming later, and the commitment from the players to attend the prac-tice sessions have made the way up to the end of the season in a higher position than any other team. Jaume Serra also high-lights the constancy of their players during the week in order

to explain some of the crucial points for the success of the team, a fact that is “not normal” in Fourth Catalan Division, since “the other teams have some troubles.” Aside from that, however, he believes that there is “nothing in particular” that explains the promotion. Therefore, after reaching the top position, both teams look ahead with caution and believe that the obvious goal for next year is clear: keeping the Third Catalan Division. Balenyà had not been able to reach it the last two times they promoted. But Jaume Serra would like to be “more ambi-tious and look to top positions.” And they will need to adapt the team to fight for keeping the category because “it is not the same Third Catalan Divi-sion than Fourth,” Sierra says. Santperenca’s coach confirmed that there could be between two and four players leaving the club while Balenyà is “moving to strengthen the team,” but reminds that the difficulties that this entails.

Calldetenes and Sant Julià B far from promotion by a game The two qualified teams playing the promotion playoff, the Unió Esportiva Calldetenes and Sant Julia de Vilatorta B, are just one game away from becoming the new teams in Third Catalan Division. After the first leg of the play-offs played on May 24th and 25th, however, Sant Julià is the one closer to the goal, since they won 2-0 against Joanenc B. On the other hand, Calldetenes lose against Artés for the same result (0-2) and they will have to come back if they want to follow the example of Balenyà and Santperenca. To reach the promotion, both teams have had to complete a great season, getting the second place in their respective groups. Calldetenes (group IV) says that the goal of the year was to fight to become

the champions. According to his coach, Nil Tomàs, “after the defeat against Balenyà” they clearly knew that they needed to ensure the second place from the “commitment and desire” of his players. Now, “we go to win the promotion,” says Nil Tomàs, because, depending on the result obtained in the playoff, a lot of changes will be done for next season in Calldetenes. Meanwhile, the Sant Julià B did not expect to achieve the second place in the Group III in Fourth Catalan Division but since the last game of the first round, “we started to believe it” says his coach, Marc Checa. With 14 wins in the last 15 compe-tition games they overpassed Borgonyà, and only the second game separates the team from the promotion.

women’s soccer - 18 -

Vic is back in Second DivisionAfter a year in a lower catego-

ry, women’s Vic-Riuprimer team will be back in Second Division. And they did not even need the last 4 games, since the players lead by Jaume Serra achieved the promotion and, having 7 points more than its direct rival, Espanyol C, they won the cham-pionship when two game were left to play. The goals have been accom-plished: promoting and winning the title. What has been the key for the success?Jaume Serra says it is because of “a big team, with nice people and good players”, in an interview to a local TV.After a few years being in the top positions of the ranking in Second Division, the relegation was tough. The team had to win to survive, but even though the players fought until the end in

Girona, the tied the last game in the last minutes and they could not make it. To begin the season in Prefer-ential Division, some changes were done. Almost all the players were renewed, and the trusted in new coaches, such as Jordi Garces, Jordi Serra, and Lluis Torrents. And the new players also joined the team: Nacha and Mar (FC Barcelona), Carla Ventura (Gimnàstic de Tarragona), Judith Lira (RCD Espanyol), Maria Reche (Girona FC), Jenny (Parroquial Santa Eugènia CF), Noemi Vila (Bertola CF), and Judit Fresquet (Sabadell, CF).After a season in which they got 67 points (21 won, 4, tied, 3 defeated), they scored 79 and only let the ball 18 times to get to their goal, now is time to think about next season.

And in the club this is crystal clear: keep the category and be that team they used to be. And some changes will be made in order to create a more compet-itive team. Marc Pladevall told in an interview in a local TV that “we will trust in our current team, but we will make some changes. For the moment, we are managing 4 new singings”.

Seven women teams

The first team will play in Second Division. This fact means that it is the team which plays in a highest competition in Osona in women’s soccer. But other six Vic-Riuprimer junior soccer teams have also achieved some goals. The players in Second Catalan Division have promoted to First Division as the second best team, behind Enfaf. In U18

category, there are two teams, and the one playing in First Division ranked in intermediate positions. There are three teams playing U14 seven-a-side soccer. A Team has promoted, same as B Team (not defeated in the whole season), and the C Team, the training team, has achieved a good season.Jordi Serra, in the interview of the local TV, says that in junior soccer teams “there are very skilled players that might end up playing in the first team. The truth is that we have been working hard, all the coaches and coordinators. You can look you very junior teams to take, in a future, players for the first team”.The club will keep supporting women’s soccer and will try to keep the teams they currently have.

women’s soccer- 19 -

Juanjo Gibaja “Women’s soccer will never be like male’s” Both Deputy Delegates of the Federació Catalana de Futbol (Catalan Soccer Federation) in Osona, Pere Alsina and Juanjo Gibaja talk about the health status of women’s soccer in the region before the end of the season. How do you explain the good situation of women’s soccer in Osona? Pere Alsina: The amount of soccer clubs that have a women’s team is quite high in the region and a lot of girls are playing soccer. We are doing well, but we still lack some things. When girls grow up, it is very hard to have senior teams. In general, we still need more girls. So we celebrate the day of women’s soccer, to encourage more people to play. There are currently 17 teams with a female

team. Could it be more? P: Yes, because in places like Tona there are no girls playing. What future do you see concerning women’s soccer in the region? Juanjo Gibaja: It will never be like male’s. P: I think there will be many girls who will play because every day there are more of

them. We start from the premise that there may exist more women’s teams because there are lots of girls playing with men. Probably, if soccer could not be mixed, we would create more women’s soccer. But we must understand that girls play soccer and they do it well, and depending on which category or on which teams they are, with boys, they can also improve a

little more. Do you think that there are only three U12 teams in the lowest women’s soccer category? P: Yes, because in lower categories, which is where you start, it would be nice if there were more. If we talk about Vic REFO, which has six women’s teams, they do not have any in this category. It means that if you start the ladder one rung above, you automatically go to look for players in the clubs that have junior teams. This will end up being a problem for them. And Manlleu as well, which has three and does not have a U12. I speak about them because they are two big teams and they are in big cities. And if you ask to small towns to have junior women’s teams it turns very hard.

Riudeperes and Moià do not have women’s team anymore due to the lack of players

The second Jornada de Futbol Femení took place in Torelló

Women’s soccer keeps grow-ing, same as the problems to find enough girls do. This season, in Osona, two teams have quitted the competition: Riudeperes and Moià. The reason is the lack of commitment of the players, despite the fact that the clubs do their best to keep their senior teams. Riudeperes had one team in Preferential Division and one in Second Division. But none of them have been able to keep the category. Changing the coaches, a sport coach and meetings have not achieved the goal to create an implicated and united team. Carla Motjer, former player in the first team, tells us that “we were 6 or 7 in practice sessions. The club did its best. The players’ lack of implica-tions and the coaches’ lack of authority have been our biggest problems”.

As the captain, he thinks that “I tried everything for the team. I helped in the signing of new players, and I have been working very hard for the team”. After the team was broken, Carla did what some of her co-players did: looking for a new club. She went to Penya Bons Aires, a team playing in First Division in Girona. And the same happened to Moià. In the 16th game of the season, they decided to quit, having achieved 4 wins and 12 defeats. To solve this problem, Federació Catalana de Futbol has talked about extending to all regions of Cataluna the 7-a-side women’s soccer. Currently, in Tarragona and Terres de l’Ebre this kind of soccer is played. If this would become real, fewer players would be needed to create a team.

The last May the 1st, the facilities of CF Torelló hold the second Women’s Soccer Day, organized by Federació Cata-lana de Futbol. All the enrolled participants were distributed in groups to do different exercises, such as kicking the ball, free kicks, penalty kicks, passing the ball among others.

After a technical session, and before the closing ceremony, U12, U14, and U18 friendly games were played. The same activities were carried out in 14 cities in Catalunya, aiming to promote and foster the soccer in girls aged between 6 and 16. It is also useful for those players willing to improve their skills.

If someone who is not from the region, how would you explain him the particularity that you can feel in Osona’s soccer?Pere Alsina: both in junior soccerand territorial soccer, here in Osona we see this sport like something more than a sport, trying to have the ball more time than the rival, to have fun, and to enjoy. In other regions they just want to run, kick the ball, not saying which style is better, it has nothing to do with the results. If there is something different between Osona and other regions is that they fight for every single ball. We also fight for the ball, but we always try to give it to our teammates, which doesn’tmean that the best passing-the-ball teams are in Osona.Juanjo Gibaja: When I was in Seva, I always knew that the rivals were taught to run before tan to play with the ball. To us, this mentality was like if we were taught to walk at first so that we could run later. After some years, we can say that Osona brings a white flag, but I prefer to play with this flag more than one with a different color, that we will get in the future. Is there any main feature which describes Osona’s soccer?J: it might look like that the soccer out of the region is one step forward, from my own experience.P: but this is not only up to the clubs but also to the people in the villages, to the people in these places and to the institutions. One of the advantages we have in Osona is that even though we play all against all, we all go to the same direction if it is needed, which it might not be so usual in other regions. J: they support each other. We can have a game between two teams on Saturday and on Sunday everything will be forgotten. The

heads of the club talk more to each other than in other regions, the opposite from other regions. What is the status of soccer in Osona?J: concerning women’s soccer it is quite good because we are one of the regions with more female teams in territorial division, they lead the rankings and both in Second and Third Catalan Division the best teams are from other regions. Concerning economy, I have no idea, because every club does its best. P: I think it is okay, it could be better, it could be worse, but we don’t have as many teams as other regions, for example El Vallès or El BaixLlobregat, talking about “big” soccer. Then, other teams are in the Second Division with only four important teams, and the rest are in Third Division. In other regions, it might seem easier to get to the next level because is easier for the players to go to the teams playing in First and Second Division. Plus, until recently, some teams used to pay their players. But we are all running out of money so the players from the lower categories are picked. And because of the number of licenses. Having more licenses seems to mean having more good players in other regions than Osona. What means having an own delegation? J: It is very important for the clubs. Some years ago, you had to go to Barcelona to get the players’ licenses and spend many hours there. Now, we can do this here. Computers have been very helpful. P: After all, the delegation is only the part of the Federation we have here. If we would have to go Barcelona, the schedules would be so incompatible with work schedules. The good thing is that the delegation is usually open when we spend time with soccer, after working. I have to say that clubs could use it for something else. They only go there when the referee didn’t have a good day, but they should be more interested in rules and organization stuff. We have told to all clubs that they can call whenever they want and we will try to find a solution for any problem, even though we don’t know everything, of course. Do you feel you are important after hearing what Federation says about you?I have never heard a bad word, but you know you can’t know what they talk about behind our backs.I think Barcelona expect from the delegations to solve problems, not to create them, so if we try to find out a solution for our teams, they will be

happy, and this is what they do want. Plus, there are some rules to be followed, it doesn’t matter if a team has 20 soccer player licenses or 500.Barcelona really appreciates the fact of not creating problems, they would look for other people if we create problems. We don’t get paid for this job, but we are okay with it. We even lose money, because if we are with the family and someone calls us, we have to be there despite nobody forces us to do it, and we don’t mind the president in Barcelona. We try to improve the soccer in our region. J: We don’t care about the color of the jersey. Actually, since we are in the Delegation, we have never tried to have someone in the Federació Catalana de Futbol.P: And now, with the current council and president, things as clear as never before. Knowing about Vic or Manlleu is easy, but how do you get to know from other teams like Rupit, Santperenca or Voltreganès?J: I check every game played every Saturday and Sunday looking for incidents. I use Internet to know if there have been troubles.P: You have to move yourself and choose wisely if you intervene or not in some situations. When there are troubles, we always get to know it, and we also know about how thing are really going. Teams as Rupit or El Brull are different, they have their own affairs. But the problems are usually the same. Talking about an individual case, how come Manlleu doesn’t get classified to play the promotion to Second Division B?P: What’s happening to them is not normal.J: They get more points as visitor than as home. P: I talked to the president, and he told me that this is a hard and weird condition. The most important thing for the club is to win at home because is where supporters go. If they

don’t come to the stadium and you win as visitor, even though they like it, they cannot go to these other cities. It is also hard because in their junior teams you can find a lot of players coming from other regions, especially in National category. When they grew up, the rather stay in teams which play closer to their cities and who can pay more than Manlleu. That’s probably what we need in Osona. He have to train our won players. It is very useful to have players from El Vallès or Barcelona, but if they can help our first teams, it is only useful for some years. It would be better to have for players from Manlleu in the National category, because they might play in the very first team. But it is not a piece cake, so we have to take the level into account. Teams as Manlleu or Vic already play more competitive leagues than the ones played in Osona. So, is a bad sign for Osona the fact that Manlleu is not struggling for the promotion?J: I guess it might be, but it is due to the fact the big teams don’t care too much about Osona. They don’t care about asking for players, inscribing them… this creates a bad environment in some clubs, even if they want to avoid some troubles.

P: Unfortunately, this is happening in all categories. When a team has a very good player and he asks to go to another team in a higher category, the club usually says no because they want a team to struggle for the promotion, and next year it is the other way around. That’s why I think there should exist one top team in every region, and the good players would play there. When this top team doesn’t want a player, he could go back to his former club. But this is utopic and everyone watches over having the best players, selfishly. The thing is, if in a small town this top player leaves, they might not have a team for next season and more players leave. Do you think a team from Osona might play at Second B? What do they need to get there?P: I don’t think so. We would need a big company or a City Hall who would trust in them, but the thing is that they have other priorities. It also requires a good bunch of players and to be lucky because, if they are good players, Barça, Espanyol or Cornellà will come to take him. It is hard to benefit from good players. J: A strong economy is a must to be able to sight against giants, even though they pay

almost nothing to players. Concerning Vic, where do they deserve to play?J: Since they are from Osona’s capital, they should be where Manlleu is. P: At Third Division, I guess because the quality of their style should allow them to be there. Do you think Vic will promote next year?J: We keep trying, but there is still much to be done. P: I think Vic has to keep working hard, they have to believe in themselves, but it won’t be easy. They have the players to get Third Division. But it doesn’t mean that once there the will struggle to promote. In Second, Third, and Fourth Division we find more teams from Osona. Do you think it is positive to count only on one amateur team, with no junior ones?J: Usually, these teams are a group of friends, with some very good players, but they are often teams from towns where there are not many players so they have to bring players from other towns. P: Half the team comes from the town, the other half comes from U18 teams that couldn’t play anywhere else. A lot of U18 players finish their stage at teams every

year, so they have to go to other clubs. They can’t substitute all players and fire them. It would be nice to see some other teams from Osona, maybe one or two, playing in First Catalan Division, in case they could afford it, so some of the teams playing at Third or Fourth Division would promote and so the quality would be higher. Is there a lack of junior soccer to help eleven-a-side teams in Osona?P: No, but I would prefer to have three teams in Vic, at least two in Manlleu because the ones who cannot play at the capital go to Calldetenes, Santa Eugènia, the nearby towns. But the kids should be able to choose. Also, not many teams of the same club would be allowed to enroll the competition because soccer means evolution (first and second year) and it wouldn’t be necessary to have, despite it is allowed and we really want lots of young boys and girls playing soccer, six U12 teams if after two years some of them will be playing in low categories. These are the ones who should be in other teams playing in higher categories. This fact would increase the amount of teams and some of them wouldn’t have to go far away to play. And besides training kids being a club, we should try to get more kids playing soccer. We could meet and talk about it, but, at the end, everyone will want to win. What is junior soccer for FCF?P: There are no stages. They consider all the categories the same, from U10 to U19, and of course it is not the same to play in a top category than to play in Second or Third Division. This is the hard part in soccer and sport in general: we should always train our kids. Most clubs are forced to play, especially in Osona. Federation forces them to play 15 minutes.J: Playing a prudential time every game. P: But these easy rules are like the “Fair Play” campaign by the Federation, aimed to kids and parents and, sometimes, “yes, wave the flag”, but five minutes later there is no more fair play. It is not only the flag but also starting to do things how are supposed to in each club and in the pitch, but we have to understand each other. Should there be more rules?J: Or more education by parents. Usually, what is happening in the pitch is due to a father saying something to another one or to the referee and, if the kid says the same, the dad will tell off him. We all would be educated. P: One of the main problems in soccer are parents, because they think all the kids will be top players and the reality is very different if we look at the origin of the top team’s players. We cannot expect one top player from every team in Osona. If it has to happen, it will. Do you think is positive the fact of having

ranking and stats and a very competitive environment?J: There weren’t rankings in Consell Comarcal leagues during a couple of years, but still, some teams counted the points by themselves. You just wanted to win, not thinking further, only about if you won the last game or not. It was slightly different. But if there is nothing to fight for…P: It should be fixed, I don’t know how. It is very difficult. In the time being, Federation lets everyone know about everything, and you see some parents if they don’t note down a goal scored by their sons. If the only

priority is who play against or how many goals we scored we have a problem. We should know if the kids are having fun, if they want to go to practice, if they enjoy, not if they have won or lost. J: Once, this happened to me: I knew a kid, a goalie from Seva’s U10. One day, I was drinking my coffee in the bar and his mom came asking me to tell the boy that if he wanted to played soccer again. He quitted because his team lost a game by many goals, and his dad told him off. So he decided to quit. My answer was that if the problem came from the family I could do nothing. I

would just give him a will to play again, in case he came back to play. That the problem might be his dad, who stayed behind the goal and told off the kid. He wanted a Víctor Valdés. Later, he went to play in Tona, and four days after, the same happened. Should there be a minimum age to start playing soccer?P: I don’t know why Federació has created a rookies league this year. I understand that they want to be ready for more categories and would be great if a lot of kids come to play. But it is not fair that 5-year old kids have to travel 50 kilometers to play. I guess it has been created because either the clubs wanted to have more playing licenses or because they couldn’t say no. Ideally, for me, kids should be six or older. It sort of a contradiction because in regions like Osona you can only find U8 teams in Centelles, who has two teams. The other teams don’t have one U8, because they already play at Consell Esportiu. How many players and coaches licenses are in Osona?P: It is hard. Concerning females, around 60 U12, around 100 U14, around 100 U16, around 125 U19 and around 240 senior. And concerning males, between 3600 and 3700 licenses, approximately. The difference is substantial, since, for example, if we talk about U12, we have around 500 licenses. And we don’t have accurate data about coaches because Federació’s database has a problem when you search it: if a coach has enrolled Osona’s delegation, even if he is the coach in Berga, it says Berga is a delegation of the region. Now that the end of the season is coming, what does Federació think about sign up players, changes from teams to other teams, and situations repeated year after year? Is it possible to control it?P: It so hard you cannot even get close to it. Federació has to work as a bridge, we have to help clubs to do their bests, but each club has

its own way of working. There are no rules. The same problems in Osona exist in El Baix Empordà, el Maresme or el Vallès, because there are always some teams who grab more players than others. Plus, Federació will start up a website on affiliated players this year, and one thing will be clear: if a club wants a player, even if he is only practicing, they will have to pay to benefit society. It shouldn’t be a secret. In junior soccer, most players signed up for a year, which means that at the end of the season they are free to go and everyone knows that if a players doesn’t feel good at somewhere, he can write a letter to Federació during summer until September and he will be removed automatically from there. J: They are underage and parents are the ones in charge. Was “Fair Play” campaign welcomed?P: Yes, it is very nice, but we have to believe in it. And I don’t think we do.

J: Fair Play is more than shaking hands and waving a flag.Is Oriol Riera from Osasuna Soccer team, born in Vic, important for Osona’s soccer?J: At the beginning, no one talked about it. P: I think so, and I said so some time ago. Even we he went with Catalunya National Team. I think it is always important. Sometimes, I think we don’t know how to make profit from what we have. We just talk about it for a moment, not about when he signed, only when he scored two goals to Real Madrid and because it was Real Madrid and in Osona we support Barça. But it is important for the region and we must admit that Oriol has always been fighting for this and he trusted in himself, because it was not easy for him. Do you think we will see this happening again or it is only on case in a lifetime?J: Luck is very important; you have to be a good player and to be in the right time and in the right place, but why not?P: I think more players will be like him, but you have to be lucky. And sometimes, it might seem as if after leaving Barça everything will go worse, and it is not true. Not as much players as they want us to believe. Last question: what do you wish for Osona’s soccer next season?J: Getting to the top and by the best way; a team in Second B; and more teams from Osona in First and Second Catalan, every time in more categories. P: And I wish the people working on soccer trust in themselves and in the work they do. I wish the teams winning the promotion don’t give up, one of the typical things in the region since a long time ago.

Excitement, compromise, and pride in El Brull soccer team during 20 years

el brull team from 2013/14 season | www.ceelbrull.com team from 96/97 season | www.ceelbrull.com

There are three features that describe the Club Esportiu El Brull: excitement to create a competitive soccer team from nowhere in 1994, but without the usual level of exigency that this sport requires every day; persis-tence to find the players that will sustain the team next season and the effort of repeating it every June when everything is over; and the pride of feeling the team as an unique and only team and of receiving the heritage and effort given by the very founders 20 years ago. This is the story of a special club, maybe unrepeatable, not only in the region of Osona but around Catalunya and in the Fourth Regional Division of the country –the former Third Regional Division.

Not many people, but loads of excitement

It was 1994 in a very small village with about 200 inhabitants, a village with no sign of the foundation of an amateur soccer team. As one of the founders says, the only goal-keeper in 20 years and the current president, Antoni Rebés, “of the 200, if you don’t take

the women into account, only one hundred remain, and of these, if you pick the ones who can play soccer, you can’t make a team. Thus, despite the willingness of a group of young people from the village to create a new sport club which competes in the Feder-ació Catalana de Futbol (Soccer Catalan Fed-eration), they needed an external collabora-tion. Three or four players came from the village next to el Brull, Seva, to join the first players from the village. Some others came from higher categories because they couldn’t spend the time their former clubs expected from them. So after all, a first was created, with not a lot of players, but really willing to play, a team that first played back in 1994/95 season. Names like the Colomé, Casals de “la Sala”, or the one of the goalkeeper who came from Vic soccer teamwhen he was 19, Anton, or the one of the forward “Lalo” –who played for Andorra in Second Division B—still are in the heads of the neighbors of El Brull as the founders and the ones in charge in the club that, despite the hard times and its spec-ifications, is still alive.

Orange color: blame Barça’s Dream Team

El Brull chose orange when the team was cre-ated for two reasons: they wouldn’t need a sec-ond color shirt -20 years ago, orange was not a common color—and because the relation they had with Barça’s Dream Team, the winner of the 1992 Champions League wearing an orange shirt, a team who made stages in el Montanyà, where some players had a house. Since El Brull’s first sea-son, the team has had only four different shirts. The last ones were used for the first time on Feb-ruary 8th 2014, and are the only numbering from 1 to 28, even though that Catalan Federation al-

Anton Rebés, more minutes than Xavi Hernández

Since 1994/94 season he has been the starting goalkeeper and has never been a substitute for him. Indeed, he played all the official games in all competitions. Plus, he was one of those who created the club and he laughs when people says that Xavi Hernández have beaten the games and minutes played record with Barça. He is currently the president since 2005, when he took over from Ramon Sala (1995-2005), after the first president Rafael Corderech (1994-1999).

No stadium, no artificial light

This little village does not have a soccer field. So they had to manage it from the very beginning to find a place where they could play. El Brull was, and still is, located near an urbanization called Montanyà, where there exist very nice facilities in the Hotel –a place where teams such Barça, Albacete or the National Team of Tunisia have been to prepare the seasons—they decided to rent one of the few natural grass fields in Osona to use it as the home field. Actually, this kind of surface was what attracted the players who wanted to join El Brull. Since 2005, the club had to get used to the artificial turf that was placed in the field and to the fact that most of the village got one for their teams.“My tactic was to use the field, but I could use it until artificial turf fields multiplied” to draw players from good teams, such as the current president of the Vic soccer team Cinto Codina or Manel Passa, says Anton Rebés. Rebés says, indeed, that from that moment on, lots of players preferred to stay at their towns because it was more comfortable, and for another reason: the solution for get-ting funding to pay the clubs’ new facilities and infrastructures was to get money from junior teams. Thus, a kid could start play-ing by the age of 7, close from home, and knowing that he might one day play in the first team. But this was not an option for El Brull. You can’t compete against the facilities because, for example, there have never been artificial light in the training days. So the club had to choose another team’s philosophy.

A competitive team in the middle of the ranking

No artificial light, no training days. But this was not the goal of El Brull. Their goal was to be able to play a game and to be competi-tive, knowing before starting that they had different conditions than most teams. That’s why some players tried, during the week, to find other teams where they could practice. The ones who were studying in Barcelona –and many of them were—played university leagues and, and they even create an indoor soccer team for those who wanted to play during the week in the Regional League. Anton Rebés sums up the meaning of being part of a team like this: “I can play soccer here, and I forever will, with those who I like, I have fun, I have no pressure for win-ning but we are competitive. One of the distinctive features of the team is that they try that every single player plays the same amount of minutes throughout the season. 16 out of 28 players are called to the games, and the five substitutions are made during half time so, sometimes, the team has to play with 10 players for this reason. The absence of preparation is balanced with attitude, the crucial factor to face ninety minutes. Their rivals like them because of the effort that supposes to continue with a project like this during 20 years, and also the referees do, since not many supporters go to watch the games at the stadium. “Our path is the one of a middle ranking team that has had some good years, and when we haven’t we got the 8th place, the 6th… but this is worthy of merit that, of 16 or 18 team, 10 or 12 are behind us”, says Rebés.

Promotion’s year

2003/04 season left almost all the rivals behind them: El Brull got the second place in Third Regional Division, with the same amount of points the first classified got, but second because of the goals difference

between them. It has to be said that the cru-cial game was held on a Sunday morning and El Brull having only 10 players. It was the 10th anniversary of the founda-tion of the club and the way it all happened allowed to create a team with good players –many players from other teams played his last year in this club - and this and to play against Masnou soccer team to promote to the Second Regional Division. The first game ended 2-1 for el Brull but in the second game there were no chances: El brull lost 6-0. But they got an explanation.Masnou had a team in First Catalan Divi-son (four categories above El Brull’s) and, thanks to a rule, players from the first team were allowed to play in Regional games until certain age.So the team from el Maresme called the forward, the central midfielder and central defender to beat El Brull, who appealed an improper alignment that the FCFd idn’t consider. However, as Rebés says, the team wouldn’t probably have thought of promoting.

Once in a blue moon

Despite the fact of not promoting, the club kept working the same way that always did: working for next season and looking for players who wear the orange color of a team that has allowed to locate El Brull in a map, and it might be unrepeatable without the excitement of the group of young boys who created the team. The club is alive because of the willing-ness of the players that have been part of it. “What we have lived is ours. When we could choose, we stood up for the club”, says the president, who wishes to keep watching the games at the stadium in the coming years. But he also thinks that nobody can be forced to keep the project on and that all depends on the excitement and the willingness of a special club, a club that have given to the player the place he deserves and a club who celebrates already 20 years of history. We will see how many celebrations are to come.

The referee and the CTA

The Delegació d’Osona del Comitè Tècnic d’Àrbitres de la Federació Catalana de Futbol (Osona’s Delega-tion of the Referee’s Technical Advi-sory Comittee of Catalan Soccer Federation) wants to thank the opportunity given by ‘Onze metres’ to know better a very important and active section of the soccer: the referee. Before starting, congratulations for this initiative. We are sure that this will help to understand and appre-ciate in a more positive way the work the referee does. In this first time, I would like to say that everyone in Delegació d’Osona is ready to help every club in a very hard process: educating throughout sport. I am sure that if we work together every young player will know the values of education, team-work and respect for soccer. Soccer is a sport and everyone who is participating at it are sportsper-sons, some are coaches, some are players, and some are referees. Being a coach is hard: their players have to be happy and we all know that in a game it is impossible for every single player to play. But this is not the only hard job. Being a referee may also be very hard. They have to make decisions in a few seconds and these

decisions are not always welcomed. The referees are alone, they have no supporters. They have to have a strong personality to avoid taunts, to avoid that the words from the specta-tors don’t affect them and, thus, don’t affect the development of the game. I am sure that if we all collaborate we will achieve this goal in a near future, when talking about soccer without talking about the referee is a reality. In this delegation, the very first advice we give to rookie referees is: be respectful and you will be respected. Everyone know the meaning of C.T.A., (Referee’s Technical Advisory Committee, in Catalan) but to us, this letters are our motto, which is “complicity, work, and friendship” (complicitat, treball i amistat, in Catalan). In the coming articles we will discuss what is around a referee, the educa-tion they get, the proficiency test they take (physic and technic), and we will shortly talk about how we are organ-ized so that you can think deeply and positively about a referee.

A few days ago, on the 22th March, Federació started up the “Fair Play” campaign. I am sure that it will help in a positive way and will solidify the values of teamwork, respect and education.

Òscar Sánchez, 28 years old “To be referee is... amazing”

What was the first match you refereed? Sant Quirze against Roda de Ter U12. It was back in 1998.

How old were you?13 and a half.

What did you think before starting the game?I will do my best.

When did you referee the first game?In Sant Quirze de Besora.

Why did you become a referee? After some time, I realized it was a

missing piece of me. I used to watch games on TV, and I wondered why each commentator had different

opinions. And also when I used to play I wondered what rules have to be used. Curiosity, basically.

Have any of your relatives been a referee?

No.What color was the first shirt you refereed with?It was a Puma shirt, and I think it was black. I have

them all, and the black Puma is the one I like

the most.Have you been soccer

player?Yes, I have.

In which team?In indoor soccer, I

played in Puig-Agut (Manlleu), and in

11-a-side soccer, I played in Manlleu and La Gleva. What is the first picture

of a referee you remember?

The “Rafa, don’t screw me” episode, a very common man

with hurly hair. When you think of a referee,

what crosses your mind?He is a judge.

How many penalties have you awarded?

I have no idea.In which category you referee?

Third Division is the highest one.Which is the highest category where you have

been?Third Division.

Which referee is a model for you in Osona?Wenceslao Morera.

Which referee is a model for you in professional soccer?Currently, Gil Manzano. Some years ago, Collina or Busacca.

Do you follow any ritual when you referee?

I just put my stuff in my bag and try to not forget my notes. What is the first thing you do in the pitch?I greed everyone, to break the ice. When I was younger it was different, I wanted to be helped. How do you decide who kicks off?

With a coin. How do you indicate the end of the game?

I blow three times and point the changing rooms.

How many whistles do you have and what color are they?

I have a black one and a white one.Do players know the rules of

soccer?No.

How many times have you read the rules?I don’t know, but a few. What is an offside? We all know. When a player is offside you are supposed to blow off after a player touches de ball. These are the rules. Do you think supporter and players respect the referee? No, but maybe after some time, we have not been able to be respect-ed, even though at the time being we have less problems. Have you ever been afraid in a pitch? Not afraid, but unsafe. Not before starting, when I was

the only referee, but there were some pitches in where

you could feel they needed to win, and they threatened you.

You weren’t able to do your job in peace.

Would you like to be the referee in a particular pitch?

Every pitch has a special charm, even the dirt ones.

Would you like not being the referee in a particular pitch?

Not generally. Is it better to referee with linesmen?

Yes, sure. It is way more comfortable. What is a silver goal?Silver goal… what is a silver goal? What do you expect as a referee in the future? To be able to referee for a long time, even with a belly. And I want to referee junior soccer.

Injuries due to muscle fatigue practicing soccer

Eva Solà Mascaró Physiotherapist OAR Vic and

Centre Ghedina de Vic

It is almost time to put an end to the season and more and more players suffer sport-derived injuries. When we think about this kind of injuries, everybody thinks about the most popular and dramatic ones. Examples of these ones are anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACL), bone fracture, and sprained ankle. However, many other injuries can be identified, injuries not as popular as the ones just mentioned, but not less important. We are talking about injuries located in the soft parts of the body due to muscle fatigue. In this article, we will talk about this kind of injuries and the methods to avoid them.Soft parts of the body include muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilages found in the human body. In this group of injuries the following ones are included: muscle contracture, fibrillary ruptures, also known as muscle ruptures, tendinopathies… most of them located in the lower part of the body. Nonetheless, concerning muscles, hamstring are the most prone to suffer injuries. The injury usually takes place without direct contact on the muscle: it occurs when the player sprints or suddenly increases the speed. Concerning tendi-nopathies, the most fre-quent ones are the one in the patellar tendon and the one in the goose foot, in the side of the knee. These injuries occur when the load they have is heavier than the one they are supposed to hold, so to speak, when it exceeds the biological resistance of the body. Other causes include the fact of not withstand the intensity of an exercise or if the frequency of this exercise is not cor-rect. On the other hand, variations in the status of our body can also affect it. Some of the points we have to take into consideration are the age, sex, nutrition, overweight, muscle imbal-ance, biomechanical variations, joint instability… that is why we do have to find the balance between the human body and physical activity.

But all these factors are not the only ones that influ-ence to have an injury. The conditions of the pitch or using unappropriated shoes also play an important role in suffering injuries. It is not the same to practice on natural grass than in artificial grass; the last one is

usually a heavier ground, and the number of injuries has increased since the former natural grass pitches have become artificial pitches. It is also important to wear ap-propriated shoes when playing on this surface. It is advisable to use short round cleats shoes to balance body weight and to improve the cushioning of the body. The

shoes are personal and non-transfer-able since every player uses the most appropriate for his way of playing and his physical features. When we talk about injuries preven-tion we should be aware of:-Waiting the time needed before going back to group practice and, after all, to competition. Doctors estimate a recovery time, but each player has to be conscious of his own possibilities and, thus, this will tell us the actual recovery time. Doctors and physiotherapists are crucial in this pe-riod of time. -Using appropriate protections and shoes. The first ones protect legs from bone injuries and that is why they need to fit the players, com-pletely covering the tibia. We dis-cussed about boots above.-Fair play. Soccer rules talk about this, but we want to add that it is very important to avoid potentially dan-gerous actions both for ourselves

and for other players. -Doing a correct warm up. It has to be accurate and has to include exercises to make the body ready for practicing or competing. Doing so, we will prevent sport-derived injuries. To sum up, sport-derived injuries have always existed and they will do, but it is very important for every player to know his own physical features. Also, he must work hand by hand with the technical staff in order to prevent these injuries and to make his sporting capacity the most profitable.

Teamwork: the roles in a team

Miquel Vinyet Panadès Sport psychologist and soccer coach

The title of the article shows a concept that is very fashionable now in the world of sports teams and organizations. It seems that the teamwork is considered crucial for achieving success in the world of sports and we should not forget that one of the inherent goals in the sport should be being efficient and doing our best to get the best possible results, but it is also important how we will do it. I think that teams which can work together and are made out of solid values are able to compete and get better results. Let’s see what the experts’ theories about it are and what the factors that affect good teamwork are. I will talk on behalf of Joan Vives, who tells us these factors: definition of roles, structure and dynamics of the team, standards compliance, leading, and interpersonal communication. In this first article I will focus on the roles in a team. One of the most important aspects in enhancing teamwork is the definition of roles in the team. The roles really have to do with success of the team. First of all, I would like to define what is meant by role. Harre and Lamb (1992) say that the role is “a behavior associated with a particular position in a social system (a team, for ex-ample). It is expected that whoever is in a position will carry out specific roles or func-tions in the group”. For example, there are different positions in a soccer team. It is not the same for a for-ward than for a defender. Each one has a role in the team in order to develop a task, offensive and defensive movements. As coaches we need to clearly communicate what is expected from the players according to each position. Something that seems ob-vious, but we often are not able to commu-nicate clearly. Back to the theory, it defines three types of roles. The first defines the players who focus on the task or goal to be achieved. We could say that they work hard and focus on improving the productivity and performance of the team. Others are interested in socioemotional aspects that ensure the maintenance and continuity of the team. These are the ones that focus on relationships and on creating a good atmosphere in the team. Finally, the so-called individual roles, which are focused on meeting their own personal needs regardless of what the team needs from them. It may be nega-tive to keep the cohesion of the team. Haré (1985) suggests that the role is “any set of behaviors that a person exhibits in a characteristic way in a group.” In this aspect, every player of the team has his own way to show their personality. Depending on how a player is, we will give him a more or less important role in the team. For example, a player who is hard working, has technical qualities, and a nice personality to his teammates could be the captain, due

to his ability to unite the team while doing group work as a catalyst. The choice of the leader of the team is particularly important. In this aspect, my suggestion is

that the team should choose the captain, but the coach also should decide choose someone who he considers that by their human qualities and techniques can posi-

tively influence the team. Identifying the characteristics of the players in the team is one of the most important tasks we have as coaches, as this is the first step when it comes to functions and roles granted to be given to our players. Some players, because of their quality or technique, their capacity to work hard can per-form task-oriented roles; warm and calm players can help to smooth out conflicts and improve the environment in the team. It is crucial to know the players to understand what we can ask from them, what role they can play to improve the functioning of the team. Finally, we need to know what the steps when giving roles to the players are. First, we must clearly explain what role the coach expects from each player. When this has been done, we have

to see if it is accepted by the player himself, and finally we must wait to see if the player fulfills the role. The more accepted is the role, the better the team will work. When there is a conflict in a team, it is often due to not acceptance of the role by a player. A good example might be when we substitute a player we want him to come back in the second half off the bench, but he does not like it. To explain him the importance of their role and to accept it is crucial because when he will have to play he will want to do it well. Another example is when a player believes he deserves more minutes because he considers himself better than another, which deserves to be more min-utes in the field, but the coach believes he must not be on the field. In this case, telling him the reasons for this choice will help him to accept it, little by little, despite he might not do so at first. And, at least, he will know what the coach expects of him as a player in a team. Thus, we observe our players, we appreciate their features, we give them the role that best suits their features, and we talk to the athlete and to team. We must help him so he understands his role in and out of the field. Roles in the team are a factor that can help, as coaches, to improve the functioning of the team and teamwork.

CE AiguafredaNew pitch and being born again

Unió Esportiva Aiguafreda was born again on December the first, 2013. Back then, the artificial pitch and the surrounding facilities (changing rooms, stands…) were inaugurated. In the last few years, this club accounted only on seven-a-side team due to the fact that the pitch could not have been played by eleven-a-side teams. This caused an exodus of the players when they turned 12, after finishing the first stage of eleven-a-side soccer. Plus, the first team played as visitor during the whole season. However, they got to Third Division, but then, they decided to sell their position to Unió Esportiva Vic for economic reasons. Actually, until the inauguration, the club did not have any own space for practice sessions and its four teams (U10, U12, and U14) had to play most games as visitors. So, in the second half of the season, it was all the way around: every weekend games were played in their own facilities, and lots of people started going to the stadium.

Aiguafredas’ vice president, Josep Garrido, says that the new turf pitch is sort of a magnet, working in two ways: the kids don’t leave the village to play in other clubs, and the ones who left are able to come back and play another time with Aiguafreda.A benefit for the club that helps to stabilize this project, thanks to efforts everybody has done, the indebt for the facilities, the anonymous donations, and the City Hall, who paid the field, the most remarkable part, but not the only necessary one when people have to get to the sports area in a village with 2500 inhabitants. The reactions of those who have seen the pitch are all positive, so far. “It is a beautiful pitch, not only for the grass but also for what surrounds it”, says the vice president. He also highlights that this pitch is the only one in Catalunya with natural fiber turf and, thus, it is innovator and will be a model for the coming sports facilities in other villages and cities.

From Third Regional Division to First Catalan Division in five years. Four promotions in the last five seasons is what the first team has achieved until 2010 season, when he used to play his home games in Sant Julià de Vilatorta. But going up to most important regional categories ended up when the club sold his position in First Division to Unió Esportiva Vic, the 11th club in the rank-ing in Preferential Regional Division. “We can talk about direct selling and not about fusion, even though we tried to talk to our players to convince them to stay in Vic’s team for next season”, says Josep Garrido. The main problem was the money. Years before, the president of the club, Ricard Campasol, announced that they could not cover the 25% of the total cost that was supposed to be paid to play in First Catalan Disvision. “Aiguafreda could not have been in this category, except for if the club would have been fund-raised thanks to grants, if we could have been able to do things properly, or if the

economic situation in the country would have been fair”, says Garrido. There were other clubs who showed interest to buy this position, teams such as Mollet or Granollers (both from Vallès Oriental), but they chose Vic to keep some of the players, and because it was the nearest village to play football for many players from Osona. Following the legislation –with rules that banned the selling with no reasons–, the team simulated a fusion, with a team in Vic as a result, wearing the kit and name with the name of the Osona’s club. “It was negative for Aiguafreda if we talk about losing a category that we would not be able to be in again”, says the vice president. But he does not regret it because “it was an unsustain-able situation for a small village like ours, a village that one day or another will run out of funding.”“In this kind of situations, teams go back where they belong”, despite they cannot hide the will got going up again someday, starting for U11 soccer.

Children will be the key in the future

sold his position to UE Vic

There are only seven-a-side teams in Aiguafreda at the time being, and not a single one in Regional Division. Between 60 and 70 kids have been part of the U8, U10, and U12 in 2013/2014 season, in a club whose priority is “to work with young soccer and not empow-er a first team”, says Josep Garrido. The main desire is to teach how to play soccer and educate people. “We prefer a good player and a nice kid rather than an excellent player and a bad kid”. Children coming, mostly, from this same town, but also from Centelles and Figaró.After the kids playing in the current teams grow up, new teams will be creat-ed. They plan to create an U16 team next season and, step by step, an U19 team and a first team in Fourth Catalan Division. This last team is supposed to be set up with the young from the village. They used to play in Aiguafreda’s team and they had to go when they played eleven-a-side soccer, but know they think about

coming back. If the club has enough money, the team will be created, but there are no rushes. But, of course, the team will not use the money from the kids in seven-a-side to fund the first team. Junior soccer creates benefits that are reinvested in its development: material, facilities, and qualified trainers. This is one of the others priorities: having qualified trainers that can educate and teach players. This can be seen in the will of club to pay those who want to have the degree in leisure time (a title that in Catalunya allows a person to take care of a group of kids; a title that is required in every job that has to do with kids). With this title, the train-ers will respect next year’s new legisla-tion.Plus, the club wants more children in the coming years, and they also want to have two teams per category and, if possible, improve the quality of the players, starting from the very young ones.

The MIC

Three Vic REFO teams participate in the tournament

Vic Riuprimer brought an U16, U14, and a U12 team in the competition hold during Easter. In all three cases, they were able to overcome the first stage of the tournament with only one loss among the nine games the three teams played. The U12 team lost 3-0 against Bar-ça, but the other games were wins and draws. However, in the final phase played April the 18thand the 19th they were not that lucky. U16 team lost both games of the second

round with the same result (4-0) against Nueva Vanguardia (Murcia) and ‘Brazil National Team’. “The U14 got classified in the round of 32 (winning 1-0 against Mislata, from Valencia) but they lost in the next round by 3-0 against Club Norte America, from Ecuador. Meanwhile, U12 team tied the first game of the quarterfinals against Total Foot-ball Academy (USA) and lost by a resounding 7-0 against Ajax from Amsterdam.

A translator from Vic at MICA lot of teams around the world come to play the MIC Tournament, since it is very international. Teams from Lebanon, Australia, Japan, Rus-sia or Egypt come to the Costa Brava and the language becomes a prob-lem. But everything has a solution.

Aitor Fuentes, a Translation student from Vic, cooperated in the day by day of three teams (Hong-Kong Chelsea FC, Glenwegians FC from South Africa and Lane United team from United States) and helped them to contact with the respon-sible people of the tournament, in English, and the managers from

As every year, MIC (Mediter-ranean International Cup) is an unmissable event in the soccer calendar of Catalunya and around the world. In this year, the 14th tournament, 200 teams from 35 countries participated in the competition organized in the Costa Brava. The director of MIC, Juanjo Rovira thinks it has been a positive edition, always aiming to “make every year the best MIC of history.” Despite the strong international character of the tournament (35% of the teams are from all over the world, 50% from Catalunya, and 15% from Spain), this “would not be possible without the involvement of the Catalan

and Spanish teams, munici-palities and everyone associated with the organization. “Their participation is crucial to the preparation and development of the competition and espe-cially to help foreign coaches and players to live in the same facilities for a few days. MIC is a unique opportunity to live with their teammates, like a professional team,” said Juanjo

Manlleu sends a U16 team to the Costa Brava

The luck of Manlleu’s U16 in MIC Tournament was similar to Vic’s: a nice group phase without difficul-ties but a defeat in the first clas-sification round. Manlleu won the three games in the first phase: 7-0 against Volcan Junior (Ivory Coast), 2-0 against Beirut (Lebanon) and 2-0 against Atlètic Bisbalenc, one of the few Catalans opponents who played against all the teams from Osona. But the U16 team could not

overcome the second round, where they played two games in triangu-lar mode. Manlleu won 4-0 against Penya Barcelonista Anguera and tied against Club North America from Ecuador (1-1), who, at the same time won by 6-0 at the team from Barcelona and got qualified for the quarterfinals. An elimination of the tournament without losing a match that put an end to their participa-tion in the MIC.

the other groups participating. Al-though there were some problems because of the language, “there is nothing impossible to understand with gestures and slow-talking”. But, when we talk about soccer, the language rests in a second shot. “If I would have to stand out something, it would be the capacity which soc-

cer has to cross the linguistic and cultural borders, the nice atmos-phere that soccer creates and, above everything, seeing how kids forget about the results when they go with their friends and they realize what means to play a tournament like this”, Aitor says, once the experience in Costa Brava has finished.

Rovira. In addition, it creates an ideal climate because “they learn from us, and we do from them.” Vic REFO and Manlleu expe-rienced firsthand all these sensations about MIC, with four teams in total, which played the tournament between last April 15th and 20th. Probably, they will repeat next season because one of the goals of the organizers

is undoubtedly to increase the number of teams in each edition and to consolidate the devel-opments that have recently introduced, such as MIC Integra (competition for disabled people, inaugurated two years ago) and the app MIClive, which has allowed for the first time to follow the tournament from anywhere via mobile device. A meeting, a “mixture of cultures” in the words of the director Juanjo Rovira, very positive for the participants, whether they are Catalan, Colombian, Japanese or from Murcia, for example, and with the partici-pation of teams from Osona.

1992 - 20062009 - 2011

During May, most of soccer competitions reach the end of the course, in Catalunya, Spain and Europe. Thus, these are some dates remembered proudly by the supporters of the winner teams. In the case of FC Barcelona supporters, it is a must for to remem-ber the days, the locations and the rivals that gave the four Champions Leagues to the Club that the team has, the first dates back in 1992 in Wembley, and was won by the Cruyff’s ‘Dream Team’ thanks to

the goal from free kick by Koeman. Once the trophy case was used for the first time, Barça didn’t win any other Europa League until fourteen years later. The team lead by Rijkaard beat Henry’s Arsenal 2-1 in Paris, with an unforgettable by the wing Belleti. The winning streak continued thanks to Pep Guardiola, first against Manchester United (2-0) in Rome and, two seasons later, again versus the British (3-1) in Wembley, closing the circle started 19 years before.

2004The largest shareholder of the ‘colchonero’ team died on May 14th 2004 by age 71 due to a massive brain infraction in Madrid, five days after another cardiovascular event at his house in Valdeolivas (Àvila). Gregorio Jesús Gil Gil was the 28th president of the history of Atlético de Madrid, a position he held for 26 years —he also was once the mayor of Marbella— won the elections in 1987 against two other candidates. During his mandate, the team

from Madrid became the winner of the National League (1995/96) and won three times the National Cup (1991, 92 and 96), what supposed the historic ‘colchonero’ double in this last season. However, during this era, the team also suffered a year in the Second Division (1999/00), a league in which the team hadn’t been since the 30’s. But thanks to Luis Aragonés, Atlético de Madrid regained the place in which they must be in Spanish football.

2013The first team of AEC Manlleu certified its presence in the promotion playoff to Second Division B after winning Gramanet Milan (1-0) with only one goal scored by Ivan Fernandez in the second half. Thus, Jordi Dot’s team got 65 point and consolidated the fourth place in the league’s ranking in the day 37, behind Olot, Cornellà and Europa, the three first classified at the end of the domestic competition, with more than ten points of difference between them and the team from Osona (Barcelona). Before

The 13th: Manlleu gets classified to play the playoff to Second Division B finishing the match, though, Manlleu had guaran-teed the place to play the promotion. Figueres, the fifth in the ranking and the only one which could reach Manlleu, just could get a draw against Cornellà at home (2-2), even though Figueres was losing by two goals by minute 83. With this result, the team from Alt Empordà couldn’t beat Manlleu, and the supporters and the players who met at the Munici-pal field could feel it and celebrated, for second year in a row, that they would play the playoff.
