Early Detection is

the Key!

What is Contrast Enhanced

Mammography?

A Contrast Enhanced Mammogram (CEM) examination

provides additional information beyond a conventional

mammogram, and may result in earlier detection of

some cancers. CEM has been shown to detect cancers

that may not be visible on a standard mammogram, es-

pecially in women with dense breasts.

A CEM exam uses contrast dye containing iodine (the

same dye as used in CT scans). This dye makes it easier

to find new blood vessels that develop when cancers

grow.

Why might one need a CEM?

A doctor may recommend that a patient has a CEM for:

• Breast cancer screening. CEM may be useful especially

for women who are at increased risk for developing

breast cancer and for women who have dense breasts.

• Evaluating any lumps in the breast(s) that were found

during a physical exam. Unilateral Contrast Enhance Mammography (CEM)

Item No Description Fee Medicare Out of Pocket

59305 Unilateral Mammogram with tomosynthesis $250.00 $67.15 $182.85

Total $450.00 $142.20 $307.80

Bilateral Contrast Enhance Mammography (CEM)

Item No Description Fee Medicare Out of Pocket

59302 Bilateral Mammogram with tomosynthesis $400.00 $141.95 $258.05

104 Radiologist consultation to facilitate CEM $200.00 $ 75.05 $124.95

Total $600.00 $217.00 $383.00

Preparation for a CEM Examination

It is required to fast for 3 hours prior to the examination.

During the fasting period it is important to be kept well

hydrated , with lots of clear fluids.

Results

Results are usually available within 48 hours and will be

given to you by your referring doctor or specialist.

What to expect during a CEM exam? A CEM exam is very similar to having a conventional

mammogram, except that prior to the exam, a small IV

line is placed, and the iodine dye is injected into the pa-

tient’s arm.

Once the contrast agent flows into the breast, the tech-

nologist performs the mammogram. There is no addition-

al compression required for a CEM exam other than what

is generally required for a conventional mammogram and

it takes the same amount of time.

Fee Schedule – Contrast Enhanced Mammography

PLEASE NOTE: Costs are current as of 01/07/2019.

Will there be a need to have other

imaging or testing other than CEM?

Just like with regular mammogram, additional tests may

be required to evaluate the CEM findings. These may

include an ultrasound, MRI or a biopsy.

What are the risks of CEM?

Patient’s undergoing a CEM exam are exposed to slight-

ly more radiation than people who have regular mam-

mograms.

A history of renal function, diabetes, high blood pres-

sure and allergic profile will be needed on/prior to the

appointment to ensure the patient’s compatibility for

the CEM.

Rarely, patient’s may have an allergic reaction to intra-

venous (IV) contrast. Most reactions are mild, such as

hives. However, some patient’s can have more serious

reactions, such as having trouble breathing or facial

swelling. It is therefore paramount to advise the doctor

if the patient has had an allergic reaction to iodinated

contrast in the past.
