FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Ontario Budget 2010 McGuinty Fiddles, Ontarians Burned TORNTO (March 25, 2010) – Little relief for taxpayers is expected in this year’s provincial budget. Beyond some minor fiddling, the McGuinty government will continue to do what it has done since first elected – burn through billions of dollars in over-spending and then stick the taxpayers for its mismanagement. “There is a great disconnect between the McGuinty government and those it was elected to serve,” says Peter Coleman, President and CEO of the National Citizens Coalition (NCC). “People have had to cut back and tighten their belts, and many are still unemployed. Yet their elected representatives continue to spend like drunken sailors and tax at record levels.” Because of its binge spending, the provincial government is out to gouge taxpayers in a big way. Later this year, Ontarians will be forced to begin paying 8% more on a wide range of goods and services under the Harmonized Sales Tax. going to push it through,” Coleman notes. “In the private sector, if acompany was faced with the prospect of multiple billion dollar lossesyear-over-year, changes would be made, heads would roll. Why shou

be any different in the public sector?”

The NCC traditionally has not involved itself in elections, but it vowedthat it would work to defeat the Liberals if they went ahead with the HS“And so if this government won’t listen to the people, then we will wormake it listen at the ballot box,” he adds.

The NCC has launched what it calls the 5-0-1 campaign for good

government, and it wants Ontario along with the federal and other provincial governments to support and adopt its principles.

5-0-1 stands for:

• a five per cent pay cut for all elected politicians• zero increase in government spending

• and only one new public service hire for every two public serviceretirements

“When a government stops listening to its citizens, when it feels it canwhatever it wants with impunity, then people will mobilize to create theown alternatives. We will continue to fight for fiscal policies that will puthis province and this country back on the road to sustainable economgrowth,” says Coleman.

The NCC is Canada’s largest citizens’ organization and is dedicated tthe defence and promotion of free enterprise, free speech and agovernment that is accountable to its taxpayers. To learn more about
