The main program starts with the General Session at 9:00 Tuesday. At the start of the session, the Ohio Certified Crop Adviser of the Year will be named and the Ohio Farmer magazine will honor two new Master Farmers. Christine Jones, an internationally acclaimed Soil Ecologist from Australia will be our General Session speaker. Topic: Building new topsoil through the Liquid Carbon Pathway for long term Productivity and Profit. She will present a second talk later: Quorum sensing in the soil microbiome (Understanding the role of soil microbial interactions for soil health). You may not know about “quorum sensing,” but after hearing her you will appreciate its value. Two full-day concurrent sessions will begin at 8:00 a.m. Cover Crops, No-till and Soil Health will be in the Chapel, and Nutrient Management in Room B. Both sessions will break at 9:30 for Christine Jones’ presentation. Starting at 10:30, four concurrent sessions take over. The Tuesday program includes Corn University and Precision Ag & Digital Technologies. The sessions will end about 5:30 p.m. The Wednesday lineup of concurrent sessions includes: Soybean School; Water Quality Research & BMPs; and half-day sessions on Cover Crops Issues and Benefits; New Tri-State Fertilizer Recommendations; Soil Balancing (Calcium Magnesium ratio); and Identity Preserved Crops. The Cover Crops and Water Quality sessions start at 8:00, and the other two at 8:30. Sessions will end about 4:30 p.m. CCA credits will be available, with an emphasis on Soil & Water, Nutrient Management, and Crop Management. We expect 400 crop consultants to attend. Our primary audience is farmers, but we provide CCA credits as an extra benefit for crop consultants. Certified Livestock Manager (CLM) credits will be available. Details will be posted in February. The Nutrient Management session has 11 topics: Liquid Manure to sidedress corn (Glen Arnold, OSU); 4 R’s (Mark Fritz, OABA); Manure Separation (Theresa Dirksen); Controlling Weeds (Jeff Stachler, OSU); Implications of North Carolina Court Decisions (Leah Curtis, OFB); Field Application Resource Monitor (Jim DeGrand, OSU); Nutrient Management Plan (Kip Studer, ODA); Manure Application Rules; Water Quality in Lake Erie Tributaries (Laura Johnson, Heidelberg); Woodchip Bioreactors and P Filters (Larry Brown, OSU); and Ag Retailer Products and Services (Caitlin Leady). The Cover crops, no-till, & soil health program features Christine Jones on Quorum Sensing and Jason Weller (Land O’Lakes, formerly Chief of NRCS) on Venture Conservation: Public + Private Solutions for Healthier Soils. Barry Fisher (NRCS Soil Health Specialist) will speak on Regenerative Agriculture Principles. Other topics/speakers include: Enhancing Mycorrhizae (Jim Hoorman, NRCS): Ohio Soil Health Measurements (Alan Sundermeier, OSU); Cover Crops and No-till (Jim Hoorman & David Brandt, no-till farmer); Paulding County Cover Crop Research (Sarah Noggle, OSU); Midwest Soil Health Education (Paul Gross); and Healthy Soils, Healthy Food, Healthy People (Rafiq Islam, OSU). The Precision Ag & Digital Technologies session includes a variety of the latest in high tech applications. Topics/speakers include: The NutrientStar program (John McGuire and Greg Kneubuhler, S Squared Partners LLC); Digital Ag and Apps (John Fulton and Jenna Lee, OSU); Nuts and Bolts of On-Farm Research (Bob Nielsen, Purdue); Nitrogen Timing for Corn (Eric Richer, OSU); Overview of eFields (Elizabeth Hawkins, OSU, and Paul Ralston, farmer); and eFields research reports by OSU Extension Educators (Sam Custer, Jason Hartschuh, Garth Ruff).

Day 2 (Wednesday) features four concurrent sessions. Soybean School will include these university speakers: Shaun Casteel, Purdue; Carrie Knott,

Kentucky; Seth Naeve, Minnesota; Kevin Rice, Missouri; and two from OSU, Laura Lindsey and Mark Loux. The session on Water Quality Research and BMPs will focus heavily on Lake Erie. Kevin King, USDA-ARS, and his crew will present information on their on-going research comparing farming practices. Jay Martin and Nathan Stoltzfus, OSU, will describe the new $20 million project to “remove” P from fields with excessive levels. Timothy Davis, Bowling Green U., will discuss nutrient impacts on Lake Erie and the Gulf of Mexico. Other topics/speakers include: Weather Pattern Effects on Conservation Practices (Aaron Wilson, OSU); UAV’s as a Tool for Tile Mapping (Barry Allred, USDA-ARS); and Resources for AgBMP Decisions (Greg LaBarge, OSU). Two new half-day sessions are organized by Steve Culman, Soil Fertility Specialist, OSU. Most speakers are at OSU in the School of Environmental and Natural Resources or Horticulture and Crops Sciences. The morning session is Soil Balancing – Is it Important to Manage Calcium:Magnesium in Soils? The first presentation by Doug Jackson-Smith and Caroline Brock seeks to answer that question. Gypsum research will be discussed by Louceline Fleuridor and Subbu Kumarappan. The afternoon session is on the New Tri-State Fertilizer Recommendations. Steve Culman and Tom Fontana, Ohio Soybean Council, will discuss the revised levels for P and K, and Harold Watters will discuss N rates for corn. Louceline Fleuridor will talk about the need for sulfur. Cover Crops: Issues and Benefits will be a morning session. A panel will discuss issues with cover crop seed (Cody Beacom, Jay and Ann Brandt, Dan Grimes and Sarah Noggle). Jim Hoorman will speak on controlling voles and slugs and Stepanie Frischae will discuss pollinators and beneficial insects. Chad Penn, USDA-ARS, will address soil test recommendations.

A new afternoon session is Identity Preserved Crops. Among the five presentations are: How to Talk to the Public about GMO Crops (Paul Vincelli, Kentucky); Protecting Identity Preserved Crops in the Field (Peter Thomison, OSU); and Decisions on Growing a Specialty Crop (Lee Beers, OSU).

Lee Briese, an award-winning Crop Consultant from North Dakota will be our General Session speaker. Topic: Details Matter. He will present two more talks in the Chapel: Herbicide/cover Crop Interactions and Transitioning to a No-Till System. Sjoerd Duiker, an OSU PhD graduate in Soil Science, now at Penn State University, will also give three presentations: Moving to No-till; Dealing with Poor Soil Structure and Soil Compaction; and Repairing Ravaged Soils. Two full-day concurrent sessions will begin at 8:00 a.m. Cover Crops, No-till and Soil Health will be in the Chapel, and Nutrient Management in Room B. The session in the Chapel will break at 9:15 for Lee Briese’s presentation. Starting at 10:30, four concurrent sessions take over. Crop Management and Precision Technology will feature Extension Specialists including Prof. Duiker, Josh McGrath (U of Kentucky), Lance Conway (U of Missouri), and Peter Thomison and Stephanie Karhoff (both OSU). Topics include Precision application of nutrients, Corn lessons from 2019, Fallow soil syndrome, and Using Sensor Metrics for Agronomic Decisions. The Nutrient Management session has 12 topics. The program begins with Update on Manure Utilization Research Efforts in Ohio (Glen Arnold, OSU). Erica Rogers & Sarah Fonczak of Michigan State University will present Online Tools for Conservation Planning and Implementation; Christine Brown, Ministry of Agriculture, will present Canadian Livestock Producers Efforts to Improve Water Quality; and Martha Moore will discuss Chesapeake Bay TMDL: positive and negative issues farmers face meeting the nutrient load reductions. The other timely presentations are by OSU Extension Educators and other Ohio folks. The Cover crops, no-till, & soil health program has 8 presenters. In addition to presentations by Prof Duiker and Dr. Lee Briese, Jason Mauck of Indiana will speak on Interseeding cover crops, and Chad Penn, USDA-ARS, on a new approach to soil Phosphorus testing. Jim Hoorman will discuss Dealing with cover crops after prevented planting. Jeff Stachler (OSU Extension) will discuss Herbicide programs with cover crops to follow, and Jessica D’Ambrosio, (The Nature Conservancy) will talk on the new OACI organization. The new session on Hemp, plus Forage Cover Crops has presentations on hemp by Jim Belt (ODA), Dr. Rajbir Bajwa (Medical Cannabis expert), and Craig Schluttenhofer (Central State U.). Topics on cover crops will be presented by Christine Gelly and Sarah Noogle (both OSU Extension). John Barker (OSU Extension) will discuss UAVs.

Day 2 (Wednesday) features four concurrent sessions. The Crop Management and Precision Technology session includes these university speakers: Sjoerd Duiker, Jim Camberato (Purdue), and Dennis Pennington and Manni Singh (both Michigan State). Also two from OSU, Steve Culman and Laura

Lindsey. Topics include: Nitrogen management, Tri-State recommendations, Adding wheat to a rotation, and Optimizing Planting date. The session on Water Quality has 11 presentations. Chris Nietch (USEPA) will discuss EPA research on Nutrient management for water quality protection. Five presenters from USDA-ARS (Will Osterholz, Kevin King, Chad Penn, Brittany Hanrahan and Mark Williams) will discuss topics including: Drainage Water Management, Phosphorus Removal Structures, Preferential Flow, Legacy P, and Edge of Field structures. Justin McBride (ODA) will discuss new practices including cascading waterways. Laura Johnson (Heidelberg U) and Greg LaBarge (OSU Extension) will discuss the impact of the 2019 growing season on Lake Erie algae. Peggy Hall (OSU Extension) will cover Current issues in Ag Law. Jordan Hoewischer (Ohio Farm Bureau) will discuss the new OACI Farmer Certification Program, and ODA officials will discuss the H2Ohio Plan: Implementation and Available Practice Cost Share. The Cover Crop session has 8 presentations including a Farmer Panel. Barry Fisher (USDA-NRCS) will present Regenerating soil function after extreme weather and prevented planting. Jerry Grigar (Michigan NRCS, retired) will share his success with Long-term No-till. Dr. Mary Barbercheck, (Penn State) will discuss Metarhizium Fungi. David and Jay Brandt will discuss their Early maturing Corn and Soybean trials. Dr. Curtis Young (OSU Extension) will share how Beneficial Insects can benefit from cover crops. Alan Sundermeier (OSU Extension) and Vinayak Shedekar (OSU) will discuss how Soil biology responds to BMPs. The Building on Ohio No-till Success session will start at 10:50. Warren Dick and Steve Culman (both OSU-OARDC) will discuss what we’ve learned from the historic no-till research plots since 1962 and focus for the future. They will include specific information on stratification, organic carbon and yield trends. John Grove (U of Kentucky) will share successes learned from 50 years of no-till research. Fred Yoder (former President of Nat. Corn Growers) will discuss No-till and climate change. A panel of Bill Richards, Fred Yoder, and David Brandt will lead discussion of No-till, Climate, and Federal/State Policies.
