BEHOLDER'S BC STATUS IN DOUBT?By Claire Novak
Champion Beholder scared her connections when
she spiked a temperature Oct. 20. Her Breeders'
Cup Classic (gr. I) status remains "hour to hour and
day to day," according to Spendthrift Farm general
manager Ned Toffey.
After shipping from California Oct. 19, the Richard
Mandella trainee developed a 101.3 fever. Her usual
temperature is 100.3, but even the slight rise is cause for
concern given her history—she missed last year's Breed-
ers' Cup Distaff (gr. I) with a fever and lung infection.
Veterinary exams yielded encouraging results: Be-
holder's white blood cell count was slightly elevated and
her lung scan clean; shipping stress rather than infection
likely caused the fever. Treated with an antibiotic, she
did not train Oct. 20 and is unlikely to train Oct. 21.
"We'll have to see what the fever does," Toffey said.
"But it's a great sign she has responded well to med-
ication. She hasn't been given anything that would
interfere with racing. Breeders' Cup is not ruled out,
and her initial test results were very encouraging." BH

F-T OCTOBER HIPS TO WATCH: SESSION 3By Ian Tapp
The Oct. 21 session of Fasig-Tipton October fea-
tures a pair of offerings their connections have
valued in excess of $200,000. So far, the market
has not agreed, but that might change Wednesday.
Brookdale Sales consigns Hip 861, a Street Cry
filly out of the Galileo mare Real Sense who twice
missed her reserve at Keeneland auctions. She
was bought back for $240,000 last November and
for $235,000 in September.
The filly hails from a strong Niarchos family:
Her third dam is the excellent producer Aviance, a
granddaughter of foundation mare Best in Show,
and the yearling's dam is a three-quarter sister to
dual group I winner and Italian champion Saddex.
Later in the session comes another filly from the
Brookdale consignment, Hip 1025, a daughter of
Medaglia d'Oro and Snow Top Mountain, who won
or placed in seven graded stakes. The yearling, a
$250,000 Keeneland September RNA, is offered on
behalf of breeder Audley Farm Equine. BH

PURDUE BREAKS GROUND ON INDIANA CLINICBy Eric Mitchell
Indiana horsemen were thrilled Oct. 20 to see
ground broken in Shelbyville for an $8.8 million
state-of-the-art veterinary hospital to be called the
Centaur Equine Diagnostic and Surgical Center.
The new clinic, a satellite facility of Purdue Uni-
versity's College of Veterinary Medicine, is located
two miles south of Indiana Grand Racing & Casino.
The track is owned by Centaur Gaming, which has
pledged $3.1 million to the project as part of a nam-
ing-rights deal. The clinic is also less than an hour's
drive from Hoosier Park Racing & Casino, a harness
track also owned by Centaur.
"This is very good deal for horsemen," trainer Tim
Glyshaw said. "If you had an emergency colic or a
condylar fracture, you had to send them all the way
to Lexington. It is going to save a lot of horses and
avoid a lot of pain and suffering."
The 18,000-square-foot facility will offer advanced
imaging, regenerative medicine, endoscopy laser sur-
gery, and specialized orthopedic surgery. The center
is expected to open by the end of 2016. BH
FOR SHUFORD, LOVE OF GRAYS PAYS OFFBy Lenny Shulman
According to the old standard, "the old gray mare
ain't what she used to be." But don't tell North
Carolina-based breeder Nancy Shuford.
"I love gray mares," Shuford said two days after
Pretty N Cool, a filly she bred, won the Matron Stakes
(gr. II) Oct. 18 at Belmont Park.
Shuford bought six gray mares at the 2012 Keene-
land November mixed sale, including Stayclassys-
andiego, a $120,000 purchase with Pretty N Cool—by
hot sire Scat Daddy—in utero. "I liked her breeding,"
Shuford said. "She's a big, pretty mare, and I also like
Scat Daddy, who is having a great year. And she is
gray."
So is Pretty N Cool, who added the Matron to her
Sorrento Stakes (gr. II) victory at Del Mar this season.
Shuford is keeping Pretty N Cool's yearling half sister
by Blame but plans to sell her weanling Lemon Drop
Kid filly. BH

BC HOPES FOR FOREIGN HANDLE GROWTHBy Tom LaMarra
The Breeders' Cup World Championships will be of-
fered for wagering in about 25 foreign countries,
including Canada, this year—about the same num-
ber as 2014. Officials are hoping for some growth
in terms of foreign pari-mutuel handle—about $16
million last year, or 10% of total wagering—but im-
pediments remain.
Ken Kirchner, the president of FalKirk Interna-
tional who is in his 20th year of managing simulcast
operations for Breeders' Cup, said there are "difficult
technical and legal issues surrounding commingling
(of pools in foreign countries), and that's an imped-
iment to expansion of wagering," as are time-zone
differences. For instance, France, which allowed its
players to be directly into Breeders' Cup pools last
year, won't commingle this year.
Earlier final post times, however, will put much of
the Oct. 30-31 programs in prime time in London and
Paris, so there could be a spike in wagering, Kirchner
said. South Africa is back aboard this year while Bel-
gium is a new market for Breeders' Cup. BH
CANNOCK CHASE EARNS TOP SPEED FIGUREBy Frank Angst
Sir Michael Stoute has shipped
horses to win many of North
America's biggest turf races, but
the English-based trainer has
been especially effective when
targeting Woodbine races.
In his North American debut
Cannock Chase registered the
highest Equibase Speed Figure
of the week when he rallied from
10th at the half-mile pole to register a clear victory in
the Pattison Canadian International Stakes (Can-IT)
Oct. 18 at Woodbine. The effort earned the 4-year-old
Kentucky-bred son of Lemon Drop Kid a 118; Up With
the Birds, the race runner-up, registered a week's
second-best 117.
The trainer also won the 1 1/2-mile turf event last
year with Hillstar. Stoute has won five of his 15 career
Woodbine starts—spread over 20 years—those other
three victories coming with Pilsudski in the 1996
Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. I), Singspiel in the 1996 Cana-
dian International, and Ivor's Image in the 1986 E. P.
Taylor Stakes (Can-II). BH

DERBY FILLIES: INTERVIEW WITH MATT WINN
Miracles do happen! I had writer's block
when Col. Matt Winn appeared as an appa-
rition, saying: "I have some time before the first
race at Divine Downs—I'll help you with your
column."
RL: Hallelujah, Col. Winn. I write about blood-
stock. Does a filly running in the Derby tie in
with that?
MW: Brother Bob, it's all connected. Why,
during recent weeks I've had so many questions
about Rachel Alexandra's runners and Beholder
that my halo is spinning. And you won't believe
how many angels skipped vespers to watch
Genuine Risk, Winning Colors, Zenyatta, and
Treve run. The publicity these fillies get adver-
tises racing and fosters demand for bloodstock.
I talked Brother Whitney into running Regret in
the 1915 Derby, and Churchill Downs and the
breeding industry were born again.
RL: What do I tell my colleagues who argue
that a filly should qualify for the Derby like
the colts?
MW: Right now it costs $600 to nominate
any Derby colt, but a great filly has to pay
$600 plus forego hundreds of thousands in
distaff purses to match strides with the boys
in prep races. You shouldn't have to sacri-
fice your first-born to qualify. Do what the
U.S. Opens in tennis and golf do. Tennis has
"wild card" entries for selected non-qualifi-
ers while golf has qualifying "exemptions" to
improve competition or stimulate interest.
RL: But might not a filly in the Derby take
a deserving colt's place in the starting gate?
MW: Ah, Brother Bob, I'm not just flap-
ping my wings when I praise the fillies. Since
my first day as Churchill chief executive, 32
fillies have run in the Derby. Three won and
seven others finished second or third. Colts
have lower win percentages. Ask yourself
whether you'd rather see the best filly or the
20th best colt in the Derby lineup. You don't
have to be infallible to figure that out.
RL: I see that you're eying the Divine Downs
past performances. Anything else before you
head back upstairs?
MW: I confess that I intercepted your emails
and I'll quote two of your correspondents. Dan
Rosenberg (consultant and former Three Chim-
neys president) is rapturous in saying: "Find a
way to let a great filly in—the interest it creates
is wonderful." Terri Burch of the University of
Louisville equine program is my soulmate, cor-
rectly divining that, "When a talented filly comes
along, females are the most intense fans."
RL: Do you think the rules will change?
MW: Churchill management will see the light.
Surely when the next great filly comes along,
they will Behold Her and won't Regret she is not
allowed to run for glory in the Derby.
RL: Amen! BH
