Topic Objectives

Our main objective would be to see if teenagers nowadays spend more time inside watching television and playing video games than actually going outside and enjoying the great outdoors. We will also compare out results to statistics from the past and see how these have changed over time with the inventions of new technologies.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths Weaknesses

We are the age group the documentary would be targeted at so if we are kept interested in the documentary we will know that our audience will be as well.

Could be hard to get experts on this topic to interview.

Quite easy to get actual and archival footage that relates well to the subject.

Could be hard to keep audiences attention as it is not a very out there topic which could mean our target audience might not even be interested in our documentary.

It could show the reality and dependence people have on modern technology.

Could be seen as hypocritical as we would be using a lot of different modern technology to make it.

Mode

I think that it would best to make the documentary using Participatory mode as I think that the documentary would be better to welcome direct engagement between the filmmaker and the subject by being on screen and actually going out there and even trying out playing video games and playing outdoors and giving their opinion to conclude the documentary.

Narrative Style

I think the most suitable narrative style would be Levi Strauss’ binary oppositions. Strauss found out that narratives are arranged the conflict of binary oppositions. This suits this documentary subject as outside and indoors are binary oppositions and peoples preferences will cause conflict and help make the documentary. It would also be a circular narrative as it will start and finish with the same question about which is better online or outdoors but at the start and at the end try and be more swayed towards outdoors being better.

Location

For the location of this documentary I think it would be god to film in a variety of places like filming in the park to get some outdoor shots of people being active then take footage of a teenager in their bedroom playing a game which will help contrast the two different sides of the arguments.I think that the majority of the footage should be shot outside as I think the documentary should slightly be a bit more biased towards that it is better for teenagers to go outside rather than stay indoors.

Experts

The types of experts that we could ask are: -Doctors as not going outdoors could affect your health e.g. weight gain.-Technology experts about the advances of technology.-Teachers and if they have noticed a difference in students.

Vox Pops

The types of questions that we could ask the general public about this subject is:-Would you rather be active outside or playing computer games?-Do you know the amount of regular exercise someone should receive each day?-If people know the benefits of going outdoors why do you think they still prefer to stay inside?I think all these questions would be very good at getting interesting footage for the documentary and they all relate to the topic well.
