ABOUT
FORMULA SAEFormula SAE (FSAE) is an intercollegiate engineering design competitionorganized by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), where student
teams design, build, and race single seat formula-style open-wheel racing
cars. The FSAE internationally regarded as one of the most rigorous colle-
giate design competitions.
The Formula SAE competition is sponsored by the Society of Automotive
Engineers. SAE is an international engineering society with over 60 000
members worldwide, dedicated to the advancement of land, sea, air, and
space vehicles. Formula SAE is the largest of the SAE-organized student
design competitions of the collegiate design series. To challenge the
students' knowledge, creativity, and imagination, there are some restric-
tions and rules on the overall vehicle design.
The rules force the team to be run a like a business- full documentation on
the manufacturing cost, design methodologies, a sales pitch, as well as a
thorough cost and design review are required to be presented with the vehi-
cle at competition. This competition is not all about building and driving a
fast car, it's about creating the best package to sell to a potential auto
manufacturer for mass production.
The car must have very high performance in terms of its acceleration, brak-
ing, and handling qualities. The car must be low in cost, easy to maintain,
and reliable. In addition, the cars marketability is enhanced by other
factors such as aesthetics, comfort and use of common parts. Each design
will be compared and judged with other competing designs to determine the
best overall car.
Hense, FSAE converts classroom knowledge to real world experience.
Involvement in the complete design process is a unique educational
opportunity.

TESTING TIMES
As Formula Student aims to develop well rounded engineers, each team is
assessed not only on their cars performance and their understanding of
the engineering behind their design, but on their overall business proposal.
This is done in a series of static and dynamic events.
DESIGN 150 POINTS
Students must be able to explain how and why the different materials, com-
ponents, and systems have been chosen and assembled, and how their
design meets the needs of the intended market. The car must illustrate the
best use of engineering to meet design goals, while the whole team must
show a full understanding of the design.
COST 100 POINTS
Here teams provide an accurate estimate of the cost of their car in a limited
production. They should be able to show the judges where theyve spent
the money and added value.
PRESENTATION 75 POINTS
In this event, each team has to present a business case that sells their
concept. They must identify the Key features of the car, the design
process, the manufacturing feasibility, and a business proposal.
MAXIMUM POSSIBLE!
STATIC
EVENTS

DYNAMIC
EVENTSBefore being allowed out on to the track to compete in any of the dynamicevents, the teams must first pass technical and safety scrutineering, as
well as the tilt test and brake and noise tests. The dynamic events are
designed to test different aspects of the cars performance: an important
part of any teams business case.
ACCELERATION 75 POINTS
This event focuses on the cars engine performance, drive train response and on
the suspensions ability to provide maximum tyre grip. Each cars acceleration is
measured as the total time it takes to travel down Silverstones pit straight from
a standing start.
SKIDPAD 50 POINTS
In motorsport straight line speed isnt everything so the skid pad lets teams
show how well their car goes round corners. Cars need to have good lateral grip
to complete a figure of eight in the quickest possible time.
AUTOCROSS 150 POINTS
This tests the cars manoeuvrability, stability and handling qualities on a tight
800m course. To do well, cars have to be quick as well as nimble around the
corners.
FUEL ECONOMY 100 POINTS
To avoid penalties cars must achieve a corrected mileage of 26 litres per
100km during the endurance trial.
ENDURANCE 300 POINTS
The biggest test of the teams is the 22km endurance race where cars have to
prove their durability. There is also a mandatory stop, driver change and hot
restart that really tests reliability and the teams ability to efficiently make
changes to engine performance, pedal positions, seats etc.
POINTS:1000

Team
BACKGROUNDFounded in 2009, AUMotorsports is an extra-curricular student
organization dedicated to hands-on engineering excellence. The team
is a group of approximately 18 students dedicated to the design, fabri-
cation and promotion of a high performance formula-style racing vehi-
cle. The all-volunteer team is responsible for every aspect of the
project from engineering design all the way to documentation and
public relations. This project's industry-like structure gives its mem-
bers excellent edge in today's engineering job market.
To stay competitive, AUMotorsports utilizes cutting-edge technology
available to industry. With the support of professors and supervision
of highly accredited academic advisors in the Faculty of Engineering-Alexandria University, The students at AUM are able to completely
design and assemble a model of the racecar before any components
are produced. Once the designs are finalized, drawing outputs shall be
sent to the workshops, where team members can fabricate the various
components which make-up the AUM Formula race car. The team
shall use advanced machines such as engine lathes, vertical mills, and
CNC milling and turning centers.
Each year the team shall build a completely new racecar for the
formula SAE competition. With restrictions only to the car's frame and
engine.

General Goals-FunctionalityOur aim is to produce a dynamic Egyptian racing car that is completelyeliable with highest durability under hardest operation conditions as well as
with maximum safety standards applied.
2- Packaging QualityPackaging quality refers to the appearance of the vehicle and its compo-nents. Packaging, styling, paint quality, cleanliness, etc are all key charac-eristics. We ensure you that packaging this year will witness excellentprogress.
3- Reasonable costThis is achieved through a priority of scrutning leading industrial firms withinEgypt and seeking the different high quality parts locally first.
4- Understanding "why not what"This year we are introducing the concept of why not what. This refers tounderstanding and being able to explain why you did something as opposedo explaining what you did. This approach is crucial to improving the teamsknowledge base as well as achieving top results at the FSAE competition.
t is also a concept that will serve well as a professional engineer. Studentsmust be able to explain their designs in the following context:-Original requirement-Implemented solution and why it is relevant-Test/verification results demonstrating that final design meets originalequirement.
-Recommendations for future improvement.
5-Reliability and TestingReliability can only be improved through thorough testing and design itera-ion. This is why regular, organized testing of the car is essential. Thisncludes static testing, engine dynamometer testing and dynamic testing ofhe complete car.
6-Leadership and communicationn general terms, the success of the team is greatly influenced by the teamsability to communicate. Teams that are closely knit and have natural leadersend to produce higher results.Successful leadership is based upon trust, respect, team building and realiz-ng that there is more than one way to solve a problem.
7- Passing all test events in the competition with impressive results includ-
ng the Endurance Event
