School Board Policy 6634 Assistive Technology

The District endorses the provision of universally designed learning environments to meet students’ needs in the least restrictive environment. The environment is designed to be usable by all students to the greatest extent possible without the need for adaptation or specialized design. For those students whose needs are not fully met using this approach, assistive technology devices and services may be required.

Special Education’s Interest in Alternative Textbooks Some students with disabilities are

unable to gain information from printed textbooks because of a disability Blind or low vision Physical disability Significant reading disability

For these students, we need to provide an alternative that is accessible

For students who struggle but who do not have print disability, alternatives may still be helpful

What is a Print Disability? A print disability refers to a student’s

inability to access standard print materials

The student has disability-related difficulties with the task of gaining meaning from print-based instructional materials

format that allows students with print disabilities to read and gain information from the text
