Making an Online Safety Journal Think about your design, colour, font, emoji and

positioning.Place to record your research, thoughts, advice and links.

Can you independently: • Change the colour of pages• Change the size of text and edit text• Change the colour of text• Change the font• Change alignment of text• Add shapes, emojis and images

Tips:• The title should be large and easy to read• No white background, colours stand out

better • Make sure all text is readable • Only use stylised fonts for titles • Use a maximum of 4 emojis on the cover • Paragraph text should be size 12

This book is about computing and that should be reflected in the cover design.

Challenge 2

Communicating Online

• Choose one app / game that you are able to communicate with.

• Explain how you communicate within this app.

• What are the benefits to communicating via this app/ game?

• Could the communicate feature within this app/ game be used negatively?

The app I use is Whatsapp.

Whatsapp is a messaging app that allows you to communicate with other users. You

can send messages, audio (voice) recordings and video messages to other

people.

WhatsApp is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family.

It can be used to spread rumours or gossip very quickly which can upset some people.

Challenge 3

Who would like to share their thinking?

🤔Your chance to be

the teacher!

(IT) I can confidently identify the potential of unfamiliar technology to increase my creativity.

(IT) I can talk about audience, atmosphere and structure when planning a particular outcome.

Challenge 5

This site will help you plan and explain some of the terms https://www.nspcc.org.uk/keeping-children-safe/online-safety/

What does that mean?

is a form of bullying or harassment using online forms of contact such as social media or messenger apps.

Cyberbullying Griefing Catfishing Cyberstalking

Dissing

Exclusion

Flaming Harassment Outing

Roasting Trolling Internet Shaming Doxxing

is the act of irritating and angering people in video games through the use of destruction. An example would be Minecraft and destroying another players buildings.

is where someone steals your photos and uses them as your own, usually in a bid to meet other people on the internet or to trick or fool someone.

is the repeated use of electronic communications to harass or frighten someone, for example by sending threatening emails or messages.

occurs when an individual is passively ignored or actively rejected by others, and can occur face-to-face (offline) or via the Internet (online).

The act of commenting on a status with single liners that insult a specific person.

Flaming is the act of posting or sending offensive messages over the Internet. These messages, called "flames," may be posted within online discussion forums, or sent via instant messaging programs.

This is the act of sending continuously offensive, rude and insulting messages.

the publishing of an individual's home address or bank details etc.

Phishing CreepingTo follow someone’s social network profile closely: to an excessive degree. Can be known as ‘Facebook stalking’. It is not as sinister as it may sound, often creeping is done to catch up with friends.

Fabotage

A slang word, for ‘Facebook Sabotage’, used to describe hijacking, and meddling with, someone’s Facebook account while it is unattended.

Grooming

When a stranger tries to start a relationship with a child for unlawful purposes; this can happen online or offline. Also see online grooming.

Hacker

Hackers are people who gain unauthorised access to data, remotely, using a computer or mobile device.

MalwareShort for ‘malicious software’. Programs that damage your computer (viruses), steal your personal information (spyware), display unwanted adverts (adware) or expose your computer to hackers (Trojan horses).

‘Outing’ people by publishing or disseminating confidential information online.

Girls are ganging up on boys in a new cyberbullying craze called “roasting”. The new bullying takes place via mobile apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook, where girls pick on a boy and vent the most offensive abuse until the victim “completely cracks”.

Trolling is when a user anonymously abuses or intimidates others online for fun. One in four teenagers suffered hate incidents online last year, a figure described by experts as a “wake-up call” on the impact of internet trolling.

Online shaming is a form of Internet vigilantism in which targets are publicly humiliated using technology like social and new media.

Phishing is the attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and, indirectly, money), often for malicious reasons, by disguising as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication

Do you know the online safety lingo?

TrojanA program that is not what it seems to be. Trojans pretend to be useful programs like word processors but can enter your computer, access files and then pass on information, install spyware or adware or open up your computer to hackers. This is especially a threat when using ‘always on’ internet connections.

SpywareA general term for a program that secretly monitors your actions. While they are sometimes sinister, like a remote-control program used by a hacker, software companies have been known to use spyware to gather data about customers.

PharmingPronounced ‘farming’, this is a method by which scammers try to get personal/private information from users by directing them to false – or ‘spoof’ – websites which look legitimate in your browser.

Press “+ custom” then “+ add new deck”.

Give your deck a name. For example “eSafety”.

Add your eSafety word bank then play and have fun!

Is screentime a problem? You overhear your parents saying that children spend too much time online. You wonder how much screen time is healthy for children? The AO.com survey pointed to children spending on average around 17 hours a week in front of a screen – almost double the 8.8 weekly hours spent playing outside. Is too much screentime good or bad? Why?

Copyright & HonestyYou hand in a Power Point presentation but your teacher asks where you got the images and facts from. The teacher leaves this feedback: “Please - mind your manners and don't steal other people's stuff!” Just because something is available online and easy to get, does it make it legal or right to download and use? So, what is the problem? Can you explain?

Your parents get an email asking them to change their online bank details! Something seems wrong, can you help them? Phishing is a type of online scam where criminals send an email that appears to be from a real company asking you to provide sensitive information. So why is it important we know about these scams?

What is Phishing?

A friend shows you a rude picture. It may feel awkward, but it's important to explain to children the risks of sexting. Make a video to show how to stay safe and remind them to talk to a teacher if something ever makes them feel scared or uncomfortable.

What is empathy? One of your friends has been getting nasty messages on the Tik Tok app. Your teacher discuss “Empathy” with the class. This involves understanding another's feelings without having experience. The teacher says, “we need to understand that actions online affect people in their real lives as well” and “you should strive to support each other by always reporting, and never ignoring, content that is offensive, abusive, or illegal”. But how do you report stuff online and in apps?

Did you just share that?

What should I do when other people post pictures of me online without asking me first?

You are worried as your friend always has the latest music and movies on their phone. You think they are using torrents to get stuff illegally. Can you make a video to explain the trouble they could get into and that they are breaking the law or risking malware and viruses.

Illegal downloading/streaming of music and films is ok!

Lesson5🚖The driving question for today’s lesson

How do we make a film?

Rule of thirds Where is the light Outside isn’t quiet

Always check your recording first before saying it’s finished

10You as a filmmaker need to know just a few simple things to shooting great video with an iPad

1 Keep the camera horizontal and steady.

Always film in landscape!

🎥😀

2Get as close to your subject as possible.

You will get a much better sound recording!

3Have the right light.

Use the light well and you will get better results. For example if you film with the light behind the subject, their face will be in shadow.

4Capture clean audio; it’s probably more important than the video quality.

Take any iPad case off as this will interfere with sound recording. Be careful of filming outdoors and windy days. Get close to people to record good dialog.

Plan everything! Write a script and use storyboards!

5

6Full - A full shot shows the entire subject’s body from head to toe. It’s used to give a subject context in their setting.

Explore different shots!

7Medium - A medium shot shows the subject from about the hips or waist up. It’s useful for when a subject is conveying information and it still allows you to see them interacting with their environment.

Explore different shots!

8Close - A close shot, also called a close up, focuses on the subject’s face.

Explore different shots!

9Remember the law of thirds! The eye is drawn to the areas where these lines cross.

10 Always play back your clips!

Never walk away from filming something without checking it first!
