BCPS
Presented by:• Chimere Neal, Resource Teacher – Library Media• Kelly Ray, Resource Teacher – Library Media Office of Digital Learning
Outcome & Indicators
Outcome: Participants will learn about the structure, inquiry process, and resources in BCPS Online Research Models and Slam Dunk lessons in order to prepare for Students and Teachers Accessing Tomorrow.
Indicator: Participants will be able to implement BCPS Online Research Models and Slam Dunk lessons in order to facilitate student research and inquiry-based learning in the content areas.
Overview
Get familiar with BCPS Online Research Models and Slam Dunk lessons for facilitating student research in the content areas by: Foundations and evolution of Online Research
Models and Slam Dunk lessons. Standards alignment. Structure, inquiry process steps, and resources. Integration of information literacy skills
instruction. Strategies for implementing/facilitating with
students.
Issues with K-12 Student Research
Do K-12 research experiences prepare students for college and careers?
Issues with K-12 ResearchResearch Shift?
Issues with K-12 Student Research“Too many of the learning activities in school
libraries are low-level cut and paste activities, such as transferring facts from library resources on to worksheets or just cutting information off the Internet to pass in for a report. Little learning results and plagiarism dominates. Such activities are termed "bird units" after the ubiquitous 4th grade bird reports, but they can be on any topic: explorers, state reports, old famous dead men, or other common K–12 topics and across all disciplines…
Ban Those Bird Units: An Action Research Project Dr. David Loertcher
Issues with K-12 Student Research
“Many teachers, feeling pressured to have their students achieve, have stopped all interaction with library research reports, because they understand that the time invested in these reports will not produce any positive results. Library media specialists are reluctant to have such activities continue because the potential of the library media center and its resources are being ignored.”

Learning Standards for Student Research
National Information Literacy standards for students: Information Power (ALA, 1998) Nine Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning to “help students become skillful producers and consumers of information."
Learning Standards for Student Research
Shift in school library practice from teaching "library skills" in isolation, to integrating the teaching and learning of information literacy skills with content learning/curriculum.
Nevertheless, research still often treated in content curricula as optional, enrichment, or assigned as an "outside project" without information literacy.
Learning Standards for Student Research
Information Literacy standards revised (AASL, 2007)
Standards for the 21st Century Learner
Information literacy Technology literacy Digital literacy Cultural literacy Digital citizenship
Learning Standards for Student Research
Common Core State Standards: "Research—both short, focused projects (such as
those commonly required in the workplace) and longer term in depth research—is emphasized throughout the standards, but most prominently in the writing strand since a written analysis and presentation of findings is so often critical." -- “Key Points in English Language Arts“, Common Core State Standards Initiative
Standards for Research to Build and Present Knowledge at all grade levels
AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner-CCSS Crosswalk
Learning Standards for Student Research
ISTE - Educational Technology Standards for Students
P21 Framework (Partnership for 21st Century Skills) - Adopted by BCPS in 2013
Content learning standards for most subjects now include standards for student research, inquiry, or investigation.
ORMs & Slam Dunks Aligned to All
Online Research Models for In-Depth Research: Backgound
Development of our Online Research Models and Research Guides has been informed by our study of information literacy process models and research-based pedagogy, and by working directly with experts. Dr. Jamie McKenzie's
Online Research Module inspired our initial ORM structure and use of higher-level Essential Questions requiring critical thinking, analysis and synthesis of information from multiple sources.
We made some modifications to McKenzie’s ILPM and so called ours Online Research Models.

Online Research Models for In-Depth Research
Dr. Carolyn Kulthau's Information Search Process (1985), Guided Inquiry (2007) and Guided Inquiry Design (2012) have inspired our inquiry-based process and revised structure.

Guided Inquiry Design: Concept of “Third Space”
Online Research Models for In-Depth Research
1998: We began annual Summer Curriculum Workshops for designing ORMs integrated with content curricula.
2015: Online Research Models & Slam Dunk Lessons for Integrating the CCSS Research Strand - Curriculum writing team of experienced library media specialists & Towson University School Library Media Cohort students. We collaborate with content area curriculum writers to
design ORMs/Slam Dunk lessons for specific content units.
The ORMs are now referenced in content curriculum guides as a primary means of addressing unit objectives.
Online Research Models for In-Depth Research
Evolution of BCPS Online Research Models: Three page structure: Home page, Teacher
Resource page, Student Resource page Seven process steps: Scenario, Task &
Product, Assessments, Questions, Gather & Sort, Organize, Conclusion 2000 Example: Native American Music (MS Music) 2010 Example: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
: Judging the Authenticity of Historical Fiction (MS ELA) Only minor design changes during first decade of
21st century.
Online Research Models for In-Depth Research
2011: Tabbed navigation was added to reduce vertical scrolling. Example: Paul Revere's Midnight Ride (ES ELA/SS)
2012: Guided Inquiry Design elements merged with existing structure. Consideration of "Third Space" - the intersection
between curricular content and students' own lives and real world.
Example: Geometry Playground (ES Math)
2013-present: ORMs designed with eight Guided Inquiry Design steps as structure. Example: Epidemic Experts (MS ELA)
