3 generations, nearly 50 years young1st Generation (1970 - 1981)The first-generation was compact 4WD three-seater developed for professional use. Being the only mini car in the off-road vehicle segment at the time of its release, it stood out from mainstream 4WD vehicles, which were large and high-displacement as a rule.

SLDA features a 7-inch touch-screen display for intuitive operation. Located on the circumference of the panel for convenience are touch buttons for power, volume, “home”, voice-command and settings.

Comfort

The 55mm taller front seatbacks and wider cushion frames contribute to better shock absorption. The seat bolsters provide firmer support at the hips, while the shoulder area is intentionally flat to allow free movement of the driver’s body when the vehicle tilts in uneven terrain. The seats are narrower at the shoulders so the driver can look back with ease. The sliding range of the front seats is 240mm.

Hill hold control

Off-road performance

A hill hold function makes hill starts easier by preventing the car from rolling backward for two seconds while the driver moves his/her foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal. This function prevents rearward rolling even on bumpy slopes that vary on the right and left sides, so drivers can focus on accelerator work and deliver optimum torque to the ground for effective climbing.

When travelling downhill in 4WD mode, hill descent control can be activated to automatically apply the brakes and maintain a speed of 10km/h in 4H mode or 5km/h in 4L mode. It allows the driver to control vehicle speed with the accelerator pedal only, without using the brake or clutch pedal, and fully concentrate on steering. The system activates when travelling under approx. 25km/h with the hill descent control switch ON.

The refined 4-speed automatic transmission reduces friction and enhances fuel efficiency. The shift pattern has been changed from the current gate type to the straight aligned type for simple operation.

Transmission■5MT Direct shift feelIn the current Jimny, the selector system is entirely mounted on the transmission housing and directly picks up its vibration. The new Jimny’s selector system is mounted partially on the transmission housing and partially on the ladder frame to reduce direct vibration from the transmission. The mount structure has also been redesigned to reduce vibration and enhance the shift feeling when changing gears.

■Metal grille and cowling structureInstead of the usual resin, much sturdier steel is used on the front grille and cowling to increase body strength. Their bolt-on design make them easy to remove for repairs.

■Front door openingThe front doors open in three stages on the new Jimny for easier entering and exiting. Door parts are optimally arranged to reduce operation load when opening and closing the door.

The new Jimny is equipped with ABS (Anti-lock braking system) and BAS (Brake assist system). The ABS detects whether one or more wheels are at risk of locking under braking and modulates brake pressure to the appropriate wheels. BAS assists the driver by increasing the brake pressure to a level that will ensure minimal stopping distance.
