bad decisions,” said one graduate who had been using for 20 years.

One of the graduates had a heart attack during the program. “He could have quit, but he didn’t,” Napp said.

“Eight months ago, I lost my mom to addiction. I also have a child; now I can be a good mom to her,” one of the graduates said.

Many participants opt out of the program or enter a medically assisted program as a part of their probation. Medically assisted means receiving medicine to blunt the effects of the drugs.

The graduates used every-thing from fentanyl, heroin, meth, bath salts, various prescription drugs, cocaine, plus some few people have heard of.

“One graduate reported using heroin every day before entering the program. Many have lost people they

love to drug overdose. One has parents in prison that used with them,” Napp said. All of them have jobs.

One wrote a letter to the judge, apologizing for rude behavior during court. “It’s only because you and the people of drug court are the only ones who are willing to help me get sober and become a decent person in society. Even my own parents helped create this monster I have become and then vanished.

“So, of course, I’m scared, terrified of the unknown. I’ve never had to live a sober lifestyle before, but it’s worth trying because the life I’m living isn’t worth living. I’m only existing, and I don’t want to be another statistic. I want to learn how to live a clean and sober life, not only for me, but for my son.”

Many of the graduates had children, a total of 28 among 11 graduates. Many had fam-ily and friends who stood behind them; others did not.

WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. (AP) — A closed private col-lege’s lawyer says part of a political memorabilia collection from the late southern Illinois Congressman Ken Gray is miss-ing.

Gray’s widow gave the collec-tion two years ago to Morthland College in West Frankfort. Gray

represented the area in Con-gress for 24 years during the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s.

School attorney Aaron Hop-kins tells The Southern Illi-noisan the building storing the collection was broken into ear-lier this year, but he didn’t know what was taken.

West Frankfort police gave

its reports to the FBI, which declined to comment.

Gray’s widow says she saw men moving items from the building in August. Margaret Holley-Gray says she took Gray’s bow tie, passport and some other things from the trash but doesn’t know what happened with rest of the collection.
