one hundred Thirty-Ninth Convocation Ignites the academic yearMeharry Medical College held its 139th Convocation, Monday, October 13, 2014 at 10 a.m. in the ballroom of The Cal Turner Family Center for Student Education. This was the first event held in the newest building on campus.

“Today, we celebrate a proud history that was born from an act of kindness and is nurtured by people who dedicate themselves to providing education, opportunity and care to those who have the least but need it the most,” said A. Cherrie Epps, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of Meharry Medical College.

André L. Churchwell, M.D., professor of medicine (cardiology), professor of radiology and radiological

sciences, professor of biomedical engineering and senior associate dean for diversity affairs at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, was the keynote speaker and an honorary degree recipient. He advised students to learn new models of health care and to challenge themselves daily. He then asked students to seek support from mentors and continue their personal journeys with self-improvement. “The most important aspect that will keep you honest is unadorned humility,” said Churchwell. “Confront uncertainty and ignorance with vivacious intent.”

Bishop Joseph W. Walker III, D.Min., senior pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and presiding Bishop-Elect, Full Gospel Fellowship, also received an honorary degree from the College. Walker stated that Mt. Zion recognizes the important relationship between the faith community and health care especially in dealing with disparities and helping people have access to quality health care.

AWARD RECIPIENTSThe Axel C. Hansen, M.D. ’44 Distinguished Physician Award

is named for the outstanding School of Medicine alumnus who was one of the firstAfrican Americans to become a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology.Dr. Hansen, Meharry’s first Distinguished Service Professor, chaired the Department ofOphthalmology at Meharry and served as Medical Director of Meharry’s George W.Hubbard Hospital. The award is given to an alumnus of the School of Medicine whohas demonstrated leadership and personal commitment to our mission of servicethrough the exemplary practice of medicine.

Edith Faye Smith Rayford, M.D., ’88, originally from Terry,Mississippi, graduated from Tougaloo College in 1979 with a B.S. degree in biologyand received her Doctor of Medicine degree from Meharry Medical College in 1988.After graduation, she trained in obstetrics and gynecology at Hubbard Hospital inNashville, Tennessee and completed her chief residency at Einstein Medical Centerin Philadelphia.

Currently, Dr. Smith Rayford is a practicing obstetrician/gynecologist at Jackson-Hinds Comprehensive Health Center in Jackson, Mississippi. She is a highly skilledand meticulous doctor who still enjoys delivering babies and performinggynecologic surgeries, inclusive of robotic procedures. In addition, she is directorfor the Continuity of Care OB/GYN Resident Clinic – a joint collaborative programwith Jackson-Hinds and the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Dr. Smith Rayford said her choice of medical schools was a wise one. “To come to Meharry, be comfortable inthe environment and, at the same time, achieve academic excellence, is marvelous,” she said. “At Meharry, wewere trained to be the best. Not second best.” She recalls that, as a student and resident, she rotated throughMatthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center in Nashville, Tennessee. There, she was able to incorporate theCollege’s mission which had been instilled in her since her first days at Meharry. “Within the clinic and hospitals,we provided health care to the underserved population as well as disenfranchised patients, who were reallyexperiencing health care disparities,” said Smith Rayford. “Meharry taught us how to listen to our patients anddiscover their medical needs while regarding the patient’s point of view. Helping them merely with a prescriptionpad was just not enough.”

After graduating from Meharry, Smith Rayford began a career working at the Family Community Health Centerin Laurel, Mississippi. She later returned to Jackson, Mississippi and started her own private practice. But, itwasn’t long before she made a round trip back to community health centers (CHC). “Private practice was good, but the inner yearning for the CHC style practice, which started at Meharry, actually re-captured me,” said SmithRayford. She joined Jackson-Hinds Community Health Center, one of the largest CHC in the United States andwas the director of the women’s health department which averaged 12,000 patient visits per year. Within the stateof Mississippi, she has also worked with several other CHC including the Mississippi Delta Health Center, thefirst CHC established in the United States.

Studies and Research.

The cost of a health professions’ education is astronomical. Students choose to study at Meharry because they believe in, and uphold, the mission of the College: serving the underserved and underrepresented through education, research and patient care. One of the key objectives of President Epps and her administration is to be able to provide financial assistance to students.

For more than 50 years, Henry A. Moses, Ph.D. has been a revered touchstone for all Meharrians. He’s fulfilled the role of teacher, counselor, financier, confidante, father figure and so much more. And, that’s why we love him.

by Gayle Starling-Melvin

Dr. Moses began his tenure at Meharry on September 1, 1964 as an assistant professor of biochemistry, soon becoming a full professor. In 1999, he obtained the status of professor emeritus of biochemistry.

In 2007, Dr. Moses, a member of the Guardians of Our Legacy, became the executive director of the Meharry National Alumni Association, Inc., a position he currently holds. In addition, he is a sought after visiting professor hitting the lecture circuit all over the country.

“What I like best about Meharry is seeing people living the motto of the institution, Worship of God

Through Service to Mankind,” said Dr. Moses. “It inspires me and makes my commitment to the College even deeper.” Dr. Moses feels Meharry has an obligation to its students—to make diamonds from the rough. “Sometimes it’s not even a rough diamond,” he said. “It’s a piece of coal. It has to be molded.”

Dr. Moses recalls three individuals, among many, he has helped who still remain close in his heart.

During the height of the Civil Rights Movement, a store belonging to the father of a dental student was burned down in Mississippi. The student came to Dr. Moses and told him what had happened. Without his father working, he would have to leave school. Dr. Moses pooled his own money, went to every faculty person on campus, including the fraternities, and asked them to help out. Everyone matched his contribution and on the next business day, Dr. Moses took the funds to the treasurer’s office. The student finished school and is now a practicing oral surgeon.

Another student, whose father was an alumnus, ran out of tuition money and came to Dr. Moses for help. Without hesitation, he not only gave the student money from his own pocket, he wrote a letter to “all of her daddy’s classmates” soliciting their

help. They rallied together and she is now practicing in the field of forensic medicine and an oral surgeon in New York.

The third story involves an alumnus who graduated in the 1930s and became president of a small African country. Upon his death, he bequeathed money, and all interest made, to any student who wanted to study at Meharry who came from his country. One student was awarded the money and enrolled. By the second semester, he was told the money had run out. He visited Dr. Moses and told him he would have to leave Meharry. Dr. Moses went to Meharry’s treasury service, gave them $40,000 of his own money and

told them to “pay this boy’s tuition.” The student is now an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Virginia.

Dr. Moses hears from all three during the year, especially at Christmas, Easter and Father’s Day. “That makes me feel really special,” he said.

Students flock to Dr. Moses with anything and everything, from depression and homesickness to financial struggles and grades, seeking out his advice and words of wisdom. “I always told my classes, from the time I started teaching, one of the things you all need to do is find a local church,” said Dr. Moses. “These are the people who will one day be your patients when you become clinical students. Get to know them. You may even get invited to a good Sunday dinner. And, many of them do.”

student stories about dr. Moses“In 2011, Dr. Moses pulled me into his office to tell me he didn’t think I was working to my full potential. Those words stuck like daggers...Now, I have excelled and become a major leader on campus. Dr. Moses has been integral in my success as a medical student and I will be forever grateful for his contribution to my life.”

Eddie Hackler III Third-year, SOM, Cleveland, Ohio

“Dr. Moses is Meharry’s very own angel! He has been a blessing to my life as well as to so many other students and alumni. As president of the Pre-Alumni Association, I was faced with many difficult decisions I had to make during my administration. Dr. Moses was there to provide guidance and advice on how to approach and tackle these tough decisions. He has been an amazing mentor and sounding board through my tenure here at Meharry. His love for Meharry and the students motivates me to be a better Meharrian. I will be forever grateful for Dr. Moses and all his wisdom.”

It is certainly not unusual for Dr. Moses to pick up the phone and call a student’s father, who is an alumnus (more than likely, someone he taught), and tell him his child is “misbehaving.” As he puts it, “I know hundreds of people’s daddy’s. And, I can pick up that phone and call them if the need presents itself.

“I’ve never been known as an easy teacher, but I have been known as a fair teacher. I demand excellence and discipline because I know what the students need in order to be successful. I still consider myself to be a fair evaluator. I expect students to meet standards so that wherever they go, at least the part of their education that I was responsible for at Meharry, they will stand head and shoulders with anybody else from any other place. Period.”

Medical students United against Police BrutalityOn December 10, 2014, approximately 50 Meharry medical students protested in solidarity with medical students across the nation, in what was deemed the “White Coat Die-In,” taking a stand against the violence and race-related trauma stemming from the lack of prosecutions in the police killings of Michael Brown in Ferguson,

Missouri and Eric Garner in New York City. The Nashville White Coat Die-In was a peaceful and silent protest taking place at Legislative Plaza from 3-4 p.m. CST.

Traffic was blocked for 4.5 minutes symbolizing the 4.5 hours that Michael Brown’s dead body remained in the streets of Ferguson

until police began their investigation. The words, “I can’t breathe” were chanted 11 times in honor of the 11 times Eric Garner yelled to police that he could not breathe. Eleven minutes of silence followed as students reflected on how they, as future physicians, could impact change for racial justice.

By standing together, nationwide, medical students demonstrated that the medical student community views racial injustice as a public health crisis. Their slogan: “We are #whitecoats4blacklives.”

Lights, Camera, Music: Meharry Presents ‘The Bobby Jones Music Matinee’On January 18, 2015, Grammy-award winning gospel music legend, Dr. Bobby Jones, visited Meharry Medical College to honor the College’s longstanding history of providing health care education, training and service to the community during a televised taping of “The Bobby Jones Music Matinee.” The program will air on IMPACT Network.

Community supporters poured into The Cal Turner Family Center for Student Education to witness the event, featuring musical acts from Sounds of Grace, Kairos Kreative Ministries, Free Spirit Singers and the Nashville Super Choir.

“I’m excited about saluting Meharry’s contributions being made in the community,” Dr. Jones said. “Many have no idea of the services offered by Meharry and I’m very happy to make these services known.”

The special honorees acknowledged during the evening were the Meharry Alumni, Meharry 12 South Community Clinic and the Meharry Medical Group. Their dedication to providing quality, compassionate—and often free— primary care services to poor and underserved populations in Nashville and around the world is the common thread that binds these three entities as being deserving of such high honors.

PARTING SHOTS
