Celebrating an island’s harvest

The idea to hold a Vintage Wine festival came from the French ‘Vendanges’, a festival held to mark the end of harvest and a time for vintners to celebrate with their neighbours and friends. The artisan Winegrowers of Waiheke Island saw this as the perfect platform to share in the art of winemaking, taste the wines and match them with superb menus.

The nine-day long Vintage festival has been timed to ensure everyone has as many opportunities to see or participate in grapes being picked and wine being made.

More than 50 events are being held at seventeen vineyards during the Festival week ranging from Opera and Jazz, to grape crushing and technical wine making tours.

All week, the participating restaurants will serve the fi nest food available. Vineyards will open their doors and share with the public their products, expertise and methodology.

If you enjoy and appreciate wine, this Vintage Festival offers an experience unlike any other, set as it is, on the supremely beautiful Waiheke, island of wine.

They believe in marketing every individual property in the best way possible to achieve the sale you want. Their approach is not mass marketing, it’s tailored marketing. Their way of working is simple: they work for you, the vendor. You set the time-frame, they get you the most available dollars within that time. Every one of their sales people has a strict limit on the number of listings they are allowed to handle at any one time. That’s because they treat every property sale as a personal project. In fact, their sales people are more like project managers. Their ads look great and that’s often what attracts interested buyers. But, let’s face it, anyone can run a good looking ad. they pride themselves on being great negotiators on your behalf. Put simply, they convert interest into a sale.

SeVenTy-eIGhT yeAR OlD BRuCe CROll grew up with stories of his parents’ and grandparents’ life on Waiheke Island to which he has added his own. Bruce’s family ties to Waiheke Island go right back to his great, great grandmother Mary Regan who in 1838 was the first Pakeha born on Waiheke at Manu Waro Bay now called Man-O-War Bay. Mary’s father milled the highly prized, ship-building timber of the magnificent kauri tree. The island was all logged out by 1850 and the family moved to the mainland.

But the family returned in 1911 when grandfather John Croll, brought his young family, including Bruce’s father, Don, to the island and settled at Matiatia on the eastern coast to manage a 955-ha cattle farm owned by the influential Alison family from Devonport. The Alisons, also had been shipbuilders, were active in local government and leased land on Browns island to run cattle to provide meat for the butchery business. The Alison brothers ewen and Alexander, went on to found the Devonport Steam Ferry Company. Bruce is intrigued by his father Don’s record of his first glimpse of Waiheke as a boy of 10. Don: “I was sitting on top of a house that was to be our new home.” The house was a 40-year-old building from Quay Street in Auckland aboard the scow Mabel. The furniture followed on the paddle steamer Takapuna. It was reassembled at Matiatia to accommodate the family of seven.

The trip to his new island home was a bit scary, Don said: “The weather was stormy with strong south-westerly winds making for a very rough trip. Waves washed over the deck and into the cabin and the journey was made all the more arduous by stopping at Brown’s Island to collect, Red Wing, (the family’s new cow).” When they arrived at Matiatia Red Wing had to swim to her new home! From 1911 to 1922 the families on the island could rely on twice weekly deliveries of supplies and mail from Auckland on the steamers Kiwi and Kawau. life was sweet for John and his siblings. The family lived well on a weekly wage of two pounds. They ate fresh,

smoked fish... After a couple of hours fi shing, catches of 50-60 snapper, king fi sh even mullet and green-boned butter fi sh (a real delicacy) weren’t uncommon. Here is the family recipe for smoking the fi sh: “Fish would be gutted, not de-scaled. heads removed from snapper (not the mullet). Snapper were split, leaving the back-bone. Mullet were

opened from the back, heads split. All fi sh was then dry-salted using coarse salt – left for 2 hours, rinsed in fresh water to remove any blood then hung in the smoke house to

drip-dry all night. The next morning a fi re was built of ti-tree or dry pohutakawa* producing a nice clean white smoke. never use boxwood or kauri – a black smoke will result, tainting the fi sh.

Cook until such time as one could insert a fi nger easily between skin and fl esh. The fi re is then covered with either white ti-tree sawdust or green pohutakawa leaves and the fi sh smoked until a nice golden brown. Remove the fi sh and paint it with the white of an egg to give it a nice sheen. It is then left to dry.”

*Both species are protected now. Try beech or drift wood.

This smoked fi sh was truly delicious and really the only correct way to smoke fi sh – DON CROLL 1979

boats was second nature to him and he competed in regattas with much success.

Bruce and his wife Jeanette continued to work for the Alison family. They were immersed in the wonderful stories that were part of the Croll family’s past and looked upon Fred and his wife as the perfect ‘grandparents’. Days after the death of Mrs Alison, Fred’s lawyer arrived to discuss the farm and its future, so Bruce got up from his seat to leave the room. But Fred asked him to remain, saying “...Bruce is like a son, I’ve known him since the day he was born and can trust him all the way.” For Bruce this was testament to the mutual loyalty and lifelong friendship between the men and their families.

home-grown vegetables, milk, eggs, home-cured bacon, rabbits, fi sh and shellfi sh. Don, along with his sister Agnes attended school in Te huruhi, and were the only Pakeha children in a school of 30.

Don and Agnes spoke fl uent Maori, even at home, to their parents’ annoyance because they couldn’t understand them. A Maori woman visiting the Croll family was so impressed with Don’s command of her mother tongue, she offered them 400 acres of land in exchange for him. Don went on to be held in high regard and is said to have developed a remarkable relationship with the people and land of Waiheke.

In 1923, work began on the Matiatia wharf, bringing more people to the island. Don lamented: “As the island became more populated, the peace and quietness seemed to disappear and the island started to lose some of its charm for me.” he moved away in 1927, but at the Alison’s request moved back with his bride a few years later.

In 1933 the ferry service was upgraded with a steamboat known as the Duchess, operated by a company called Watkin and Wallace. It ran three days a week leaving Matiatia at 7am and returning at 7pm.

Bruce grew up riding horses, boating, fi shing and doing a lot of hard work. During WW11 his younger brother Ian joined him on trips to the observation post above the homestead to watch the guns fi re at targets from Motutapu Island. He smiles when he remembers how it worried him that the practice shots never hit the targets.

After leaving school, Bruce worked in a butcher’s shop for two years before joining Fred Alison on the farm. Spending time in

The KidsCan Charitable Trust was founded by Julie Chapman in 2005 and from its humble beginnings has become one of New Zealand’s most successful Not for Profi t organisations. This is thanks to support from the Ministry of Social Development, generous businesses and sponsorship from individual donors contributing $15 a month.

“We provide practical support at a grassroots level’, says Ms Chapman, “Ensuring children begin their school day ready and eager to learn. There are however, still thousands of children we need to reach who are going without the basics through no fault of their own."

The results from the KidsCan ‘health for Kids’ and 'In Our Own Backyard' programmes speak for themselves

(see below) and teachers also report improved self-esteem, better exam results and healthier, happier children.

Fullers Group limited, along with sister company howick & eastern Buses, have recently formed a partnership with the KidsCan charity to provide bus and ferry travel to Rangitoto Island.

The new initiative will enable children in KidsCan partner schools to experience opportunities they may not otherwise have. Douglas hudson, CeO of Fullers is pleased to be involved with the charity in a practical way, enabling students from low-decile schools to learn more about the islands and coastlines of Auckland’s’ unique hauraki Gulf. This year has seen a signifi cant change in Devonport’s calendar with the cancellation of it’s iconic Food & Wine Festival, normally held mid-February. The formation of the super-city meant council funding was no longer available to support the event in what would have been it’s 25th anniversary year. For years on those festival days, the ferry timetable didn’t exist. Instead as soon as one boat fi lled up with festival-goers

it departed bringing at least 75 per cent of the events patrons from Auckland city and beyond.

For many years the event coincided with the cruise ship calendar, thereby boosting the number of international visitors to an event that has raised more than $2 million for charity. Community and organisers are remaining positive the event will return, deciding to tell the world ‘...the event has taken a break..’.

yet the one thing that will never change, is Devonport as a destination and its star rating as the ‘4th most visited place in the Auckland region’. It’s the one place Aucklander’s can claim as a true ‘day out’ in the old fashioned sense and even though the city remains in your sight-line as you disembark the ferry, the feeling on arriving at Devonport is like a big satisfying sigh.

This unique marine village has the all the modern visitor wants with cafes, restaurants, galleries, quirky shops and beautifully restored victorian architecture. And its neighbour is the Devonport naval Base, home to the Royal new Zealand navy. Families can enjoy a freedom in Devonport that busy city precincts just can’t offer. explore historic north head; once home to a heavily armed fort with its fortified tunnels, mounted artillery and underground storerooms and barracks that were built to defend Auckland in the 1880s against a suspected Russian invasion and used again in 1941 during WW11. And parents, for the record, the mine-field has been cleared, you can only go so far into the tunnels and the disappearing gun at South Battery is still in place but it won’t

The Rotoroa Island Trust is committed to working sustainably; reducing its carbon footprint, rebuilding its biodiversity and working with Auckland Zoo to create a conservation creche in the Hauraki Gulf.

In June 2013, the Trust won a prestigious Green Ribbon Award from the Ministry of the environment, for its commitment to restoring the island’s biodiversity, while in 2012, Rotoroa and Auckland Zoo announced a unique partnership - the aim - to create a wildlife sanctuary on the island for some of new Zealand’s most endangered species.

Closed to the public for nearly 100 years, Rotoroa Island was a place of sanctuary for people recovering fromaddiction. This groundbreaking project with Auckland Zoo will ensure that the

island’s legacy of recovery, salvation and renewal, will continue into its future, by eventually becoming a sanctuary for a range of endangered new Zealand species. new Zealand leads the world in island restoration projects for wildlife, and the Rotoroa Island partnership with the Zoo signals a new chapter in island restoration.

Surveying and monitoring of existing species on Rotoroa, has already begun by Zoo staff and an education programme has been developed. Director of Auckland Zoo, Jonathan Wilcken is excited about the project: “It will see us extending the Zoo beyond our grounds in a way that’s never been done before in new Zealand, using specialist zoo expertise to bring back, and manage a wide range of species on a remarkable island sanctuary.”

A beautiful location of spiritual and environmental significance

Inhabitants of the island is the New Zealand Dotteral - an endangered species once common. About 1700 birds are left due to a combination of habitat loss, predation by introduced mammals and disturbance during breeding.

Teachers are invited to bring their class on a conservation science fi eld trip to Rotoroa Island in Term 1, 2014. Run by Auckland Zoo educators, year 5 to 13 students have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities based on current conservation fi eldwork practices on Rotoroa Island. This fi eld trip is strongly curriculum-linked and best suited to schools that have environmental and/or conservation science programmes in place. More trips will be planned for later in the year. The offi cial opening of the Rotoroa Discovery Centre at Auckland Zoo in February 2014. 360 Discovery ferry trips depart from Auckland and Orapiu on Waiheke Island.

Rotoroa is working on becoming pest free; When planning your trip please follow these guidelines: Check bags for rodents, insects (especially ants) and pests prior to boarding your vessel or the ferry; leave your dog on board your vessel if visiting by boat as no dogs or domestic animals are permitted. They may endanger the island’s wildlife, particularly shore birds.

Carry food in sealed, rodent proof plastic containers and take your rubbish home; Bags must be sealed - plastic bags, open top bags and supermarket bags are easier for pests to access so please leave these at home.

Please check your boots are clean and that there is no soil or seeds in laces or treads; leave your bicycle at home. If bringing a buggy, ensure tyre treads aren’t packed with dirt or insects.

Maud arrived in new Zealand from the netherlands with her family seven years ago and has had a passion for conservation and wildlife since early childhood. “Ever since watching a documentary about the reintroduction of the grey wolf into yellowstone national Park and the way this re-introduction led to drastic changes in the park’s landscape. It made a lasting positive impression on me.”

FRASeR WIllIAMSOn (Fraz) spent his early childhood in the seaside village of Devonport, which may explain how being in sight of the sea has helped to shape his life. Days exploring the beach and surfi ng with his four brothers are fi lled with good family

memories. Two of his brothers also went into the world of art and design and nowadays the boys often collaborate on projects around graphic design and websites.

Fraser has illustrated many books and completed a number of commissioned painting projects, all with a distinctly ‘Fraz’ look to them. his work ranges from large illustrative soul paintings, which depict dream and spiritual life, to quirky children’s books which try to amuse and entertain. Ideas and characters often come to him in dreams, hence the sketchpad on the bedside table at night! his work is strongly infl uenced by his time spent in Tonga, living with his wife loisi’s family and the references are there in the

form of the Pacifi c landscape replete with fi sh, angels and all manner of unique and quirky forms.

Fraser wishes to portray characters suggesting the more universal themes of our lives, such as desire, provision and grace, and environments that allow for imagination and diversity. Many of his illustrations have appeared in learning Media’s School Journals depicting images for the stories written by wife loisi, as well as his own stories. On school visits with loisi, he knows that when he pulls out a picture in front of a school group and they laugh, his job is done. It’s very satisfying and his hope

is for children and adults to look at his work fi nding a place for their own imagination and eccentricity in a world that seems to increasingly worship conformity and ‘right’ thinking.

“When I was asked by Fullers to come up with an illustration to support a new campaign for the Waiheke Bus Company I fi gured a trip to the island and a ‘tiki-tour’ courtesy of the Fullers Explorer tour was essential.” loisi, Antonio and I had been to the island before but we saw a whole new perspective on how the ‘land lies’ from our seats on the bus. The stunning bays and native bush seemed to just

get better at every turn so it was a no-brainer! And, I couldn’t think of a better message to encouarge people to leave their cars at home...we saw loads of people walking and cycling and thought, yup, we’re going to do that next - might have to try out the motorised bikes fi rst though!”

Fraser’s years in Spain laid the foundation for an exhibition of paintings recently and he continues to divide his time between new Zealand, Spain and Tonga. his work, originals and limited edition prints, is on sale at Flagstaff Gallery, Victoria Rd, Devonport or visit www.fl agstaff.co.nz
