STAFF NEWS

Hello my name is Ian, and I am the maintenance

man here at OVRC.

After leaving school I trained to be a chef in the UK. I

worked my way up to be head chef, cooking for

visitors such as Paul and Linda McCarthy and Tom

Hart.

I then fell out of love with cooking and moved to

South Africa where I stayed for 17 years, owning a

bed and breakfast in a picturesque village near

Lesotho. Political unrest forced my wife and I out of

South Africa to Australia where we managed to

motels in Victoria.

We then came to South Australia where I had a Donald Trump moment. I decided

to try something totally different which then lead me here to working at OVRC. I

RESIDENT PROFILE

My name is David Hemer. From a very young age I grew up

with an interest in trains and trams. My Father was a tram

driver and he started off the family interest which has been

passed on through generations. I overheard my eldest

brother one day when I was young talking to my Father

explaining how the controls of a tram functioned. That is

what started a lifetime of me training people in electrical

engineering.

The railway pictures are from the country side in Brisbane where my son is the

chairman of the Narrow-gauge railway which is very popular for birthdays and

parties for young children. They are able to ride the train around the track through

trees and bushland

The next set of pictures are of my old work shop.

This is where I was able to repair and restore a wide

range of household furniture. A funny story of how

my passion for furniture repairing and fixing began.

One day my neighbour brought over three chairs

that needed repairing due to his son sitting on

them. The funny thing is that he was a doctor who

could fix people but couldn’t fix furniture!

LIFESTYLE NEWS

Hello everyone!

Spring is here and we are all looking forward to soon being able to get outdoors

again and enjoy some spring sunshine!

Residents in recent months have enjoyed a number of bus trips through the hills

including visiting the big rocking horse, Hahndorf farm barn and some having

lovely meals at Tungkillo progress club and Birdwood bakery, just to name a few!

We have some new

raised garden beds

arriving very soon which

we are very excited

about. We look forward

to being able to potter in

the garden and grow

some veggies and herbs.

Our intergenerational playgroup started a few months ago and continues to be a

thriving success each Thursday morning. Residents are eager to attend each

week, waiting for the children and parents to arrive. All love joining in with the

activities together each week, with messy play activities always being a hit as well

as good old fashioned play dough! If you know of anyone who may be interested

in coming and giving it a go, we always welcome new members so please feel

free to pass long the details or come and speak to lifestyle.

We have many new furry friend volunteers who have been coming in and visiting

residents of all shapes and sizes. Residents love to see the visiting dogs during pet

therapy and give them many loving pats and words of

praise.

We still have Onkaparinga Valley cook books for sale if you

are still yet to purchase one. The books are filled with

simple and easy everyday recipes. They are available from

the lifestyle office for $15.

Until next time,

The Lifestyle Team

Do you? Or someone you know? Have some time to spare to volunteer?

We are always on the lookout for volunteers to assist the lifestyle team

No skills are required, just the motivation to go ahead and jump on board!
