REVIEWS

“The wind is rising! . . . We must try to live!”

This is the central motif of The Wind Rises , claimed to be the final directorial work of the acclaimed Hayao Miyazaki (My Neigh-bour Totoro, Spirited Away). Loosely based on the life of Jiro Horikoshi , the film follows the namesake main character through his youth and adulthood as he pursues his dream of designing aircraft through the two world wars.

Miyazaki and Ghibli’s penchant for life-like movement and visual detail was pres-ent, down to every rock and passer-by. Joe Hisaishi returns once again to provide the score, and the light use of soundtrack and ef-fective use of silence made way for thinking space and meaningful conversation between characters.

The Wind Rises is a change of pace for us who are used to 24-minute fare, and definitely a feature film worth watching on the big screen. It does not seek to inspire or impress us, but is a carefully crafted work that can make us reflect, which makes this a story worth telling.

Read the full review at suanime.org.The Wind Rises opens in cinemas on February 27 with an English voice dub.

THE WIND RISES 127min (PG) Andrew enjoys a welcome breeze from anime’s usual offerings.

THERMAE ROMAE 69min (PG) Olivia and SUAnime do not endorse time-travelling at the local bath-house

From flavoured milk to washcloths, Thermae Romae turns what we consider everyday things and ideas into fascination and amazement. Set in ancient Rome, Lucius is a recently fired architect who cannot summon the most creative or innovative ideas. That is, until he finds various portals transport-ing him to modern day Japan, where he discovers their advanced bathing culture and takes these ideas back with him to appease the Romans.

The most striking aspect of the anime has to be its art style, with the mix between live action and drawing emphasising the odd-ball humour. Each episode con-tains a story of its own so that even if you enter into the series in the middle, the story still makes sense.

The humour is a little crude (okay, so it’s very crude) but it all builds into the satire of the show. If you enjoyed laughing with Axis Powers Hetalia or Gintama then you’ll have a blast with Thermae Romae. It takes what one might consider rather odd-ball ideas and turns them upside down, and by the end the only tears you’ll be shedding will be from laughter.

If you think an anime about bathhouses with mountain bandits could become your cup of tea, then definitely check out Thermae Romae! It’s short and sweet, with 10 episodes each 10 minutes long.

Rating 7.5/10

Thermae Romae is available from Siren Visual.

Whether you’re an avid anime fan or haven’t heard of anime until now, our O-week Screening Special will definitely have something that will keep you entertained! We’ll be screening the first episodes of four very different series which will both keep you on the edge of your seats and make you laugh out loud.

All titles will be screened with English subtitles and original Japanese audio.

Attack on Titan / SHINGEKI nO KYOJIN Action/Fantasy (2013) W Viewer discretion advised.

Several hundred years ago in an alternate history, humanity was nearly exterminated by the colossal Titans. A small percentage survived by shutting themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls. After living in a false sense of complacency for a hundred years, mankind finally remembers the horrors these giant creatures could bring.

NAGI-ASU: A LULL IN THE SEA Drama/Fantasy (2013)

Long ago, all humans lived in the ocean. However, there were those who longed for land which caused mankind to split into sea dwellers and land dwellers. In this fantasy story, we follow the journey of five middle schoolers and bear witness to their conflicts in race and love as their beautiful yet fragile world slowly falls apart.

PSYCHO-PASS Action/Sci-Fi (2012) W Viewer discretion advised.

In the near future, it becomes possible to quantitatively measure a person’s emotions and desires to determine their tendency to commit crime. This is a story about a city’s police detective unit dedicated to maintaining order through this seemingly infallible system. The drama continues with full episodes on Madman’s screening room! madman.com.au

THE DAILY LIVES OF HIGH SCHOOL BOYS Comedy/Slice Of Life (2012)

Affectionately referred to as “Nichibros”, this sketch comedy details the daily school lives of our three protagonists; Tadakuni, Hidenori and Yoshitake. As students of an all-boys school, they allow them-selves to run wild with all sorts of shenanigans, from random new ideas for spicing up a dull day to philosophical questions about love, wind and skirts(?)

REVIEWS HEADS UP: SERIES SPOILERS W

Sayaka and Kyoko’s relationship deepened further through their heartwarming interac-tions and heart clenching moments.Homura’s development easily held the most impact in this movie. Being in a situation unable to see the person she wishes to be with for the rest of her life, her suffering, despair and strength to keep herself from breaking struck a chord deep in my heart.

The art and animation was a step up from previous Madoka Magica works. From the very start, the cityscape made me breathless with its sense of realism yet still keeping its place in an animation. The abstract art was retained which was really effective in showing character emotions and also portraying the many symbolisms without making it look out of place.

Before I end this short review, talking about the music is a must. With songs by ClariS and Kalafina and an array of original soundtracks by Yuki Kajiura, it is no surprise this movie had such emotional impact as it brilliantly portrays the atmosphere of the story from beginning to end. All this makes this movie worth watching again and again.

Rating: 9/10

The third film in the franchise and sequel to the Madoka Magica TV series, Rebellion focuses on the journey of Homura Akemi and how her psyche and emotions influence herself and the magical girls around her, while also giving insight on the new world’s system.

The movie is paced and directed very well - not only did it set up the whole mysterious atmosphere, it also kept viewers oblivious to what was really going on and only under-stood whatever Homura deduced from the mystery, leading to an ending so fitting for the Madoka Magica anthology yet so hated by many of the fans.

Symbolism was used excessively in this film - but not in a bad way! Many of these were subtle hints to what was really going on while others were used to openly portray the psyche of the characters.

All main characters were developed a lot further in this film. Mami was revealed as more of a senpai where her experiences and leadership were justly shown. An interesting pairing between her and the new character was displayed - those who watched the TV se-ries couldn’t help but chuckle at the irony.

PUELLA MAGI MADOKA MAGICA THE MOVIE: REBELLION 118 min (M) Move over Meguca- being Homura is suffering, writes Elton

The Madoka Magica series is available from Madman, with the films scheduled for a home video release.

You may be reading THIS ZINE the wrong way! Like most English publications, Onii Soit is best enjoyed from left to right. (Sorry we tricked you with the cover, you otaku, you <3)

SUAnime would like to thank the editors at Honi Soit, Sydney Uni’s free weekly student newspaper, for approving this phonetic namesake. It is also pronounced “oo-ni su-wa” - you can spend the whole of first year working this out, but now you know! Honi does not run nor endorse this publication. Keep an eye out for them on magazine racks throughout campus!
