Edo and OniheiThe Edo Period was a time of exciting and

uplifting everyday lives and a bountiful spirit of com-passion and cooperation. One of the most famous of the

Edo people is the novel character Heim Hasegawa, known as"Onihel." Based on the historical head of a police unit that

investigated arsons and robberies, Onihei is the main characterin the period novel Onihei Hankacho by Shotaro Ikenami, andremains highly popular today.Onihei Edo Dokoro faithfully reproduces the streets andpersonalities of Edo in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, based on historical evidence. This is the period depicted in

Onihei Hankachn and the period when the commonpeople of Edo were at their industrious peak. Many

of the origins of the modern Japanese charac-ter can be traced back to the streets of

old Edo.
