Chowghat Orange Dwarf (COD), Kerachandra (PHOT), West Coast Tall (WCT) and Chandra Sankara (COD X WCT) Kalpa Raksha (MGD) through plumule culture and to study the genetic uniformity among the plumule culture derived plantlets using molecular markers. Various combinations of media were tried and the protocol was refined to get 3-4 healthy plantlets from single explant. Effects of Thidiazuron and polyamines on high frequency callus induction and somatic embryogenesis from coconut plumule explants have been studied. On an average of 12-18 soamtic embryos were obtained from plumule explants, the inter se work was repeated in 18 MGD palms at CDB farm, Neriamangalam from January 2011 to May 2011.April was found to be the best month to get maximum embryo germination percentage and callus induction (1 year data), Protocol refinements for somatic embryogenesis in dwarf varieties is in progress. To increasethe dehusking efficiency anddehusk at least 10 numbers ofcoconuts per minuteirrespective of size.

The project has been completed and theexisting fibre peeling (Dehusking)machine has been modernized. Patentingawaited.

2Synthesis and characterization of value added products from coconut oil

Green coconut husks were found tocontain 15.4% hemicellulose indicating itsfuture application for sculpturing xylan i.e.precursor for xylooligosacharrides.SteamApplication coupled with either sodiumhydroxide or potassium hydroxide madecomplete recovery of xylan from palmpress fiber. FTIR analysis of xylan is also beingcarried out.

Project initiated in October 2011.Thetender, mature coconut water, meat andcopra were examined for various physiochemical characteristics. The productswere examined for neutraceuticalscontent and composition and the majorbeing phenolic compounds and mineralswhich might be responsible for uniquehealth benefits from coconut. The water isalso being examined for growth factorsand nucleic acids content and attempt isbeing done to retain all these naturalcompounds in the products that areenvisaged in the product.Preparation of nutraceutical concentrateand coconut oil enriched withnutraceuticals and products useful forincorporation in health foods are underprogress. Protein and nucleic acid content in totalsolids of coconut water was analyzed.The amount of protein was found to bemore and it masks the very small quantityof nucleic acids present in coconut water.The experiment is being repeated.

Mass multiplication and Demonstration of Bio-control based integrated disease managementpackage against basal stem rot (Ganoderma wilt)disease in coconut

Intensive surveys conducted in fourdistricts of A P. Max % of diseaseincidence is noted in Eastt godavari(35%), 20% in Srikakulam stages ofdisease development has been studiedand detailed in the report. WithinTrichoderma sps. 18 geographicallylocated isolates were collected and foundto be effective against Ganoderma in dualculture plate assays. Red gram andBengal gram were screened in indicatorplant assays. Entire symptoms werevisible within a month under artificialinoculation studies when compared toRed gram. Further studies are ongoing forconfirmation demonstration ofprophylactic measures such as isolationof diseased trees by isolation trenches,raising of green manure crops, basinmethod of irrigation etc, is beingdemonstrated and studies are in progress.

The demonstration cum training centerbuilding was inaugurated duringSeptember 2010. Training programmes ofcoconut is being conduted regularly by thecneter at Mandya.
