    HISTORY OF ONGC

    Oil and Natural Gas Directorate was set up by theend of 1955, as a subordinate office under theMinister of Natural Resources and ScientificResearch.

    The visiting Soviet experts drew up a plan for thedrilling operations to be carried out in the 2 nd Five Year Plan (1956-57 to 1960-1961).

    In 1956 India adopted the industrial policyresolution, which placed the mineral oil industryamong the schedule A industries.

    ONGC went offshore in early 70s and discovereda giant oil field in the form of Bombay High, now

    known as Mumbai High .

    ONGC was re-organized as a limited Companyunder the Companys Act 1956 in February 1994.

    ONGC has also entered the global field throughits subsidiary , ONGC Videsh Ltd .

    And has made major investments in Vietnam,Sakhalin and Sudan.

    Mr. Hazarika is a 1 st class graduate in Mechanicalengineering from Assam Engineering College,

    Guwahati. He joined ONGC as Graduate Traineein 1976.

    His first assignment was as Driller (Cementing) inAssam.

    Mr. Hazarika was selected by Govt. of India to theposition of Director (Onshore) for ONGC, due toexcellent work in Drilling Industry.
