Meningococcal Meningitis

Incoming Freshman Informational Guide

Who we areIn response to the international threat of meningococcal meningitis, ONE-shot Global is a non-profit organiza-tion that through fostering community partnerships, facilitates meningococcal meningitis vaccinations to college stu-dents living in dormitories and univer-sity housing, while still addressing the global issue at hand. For every vaccine administered stateside ONEshot will donate a vaccine to the meningitis belt of Africa. ONEshot can save two lives, one saves two.

Our MissionIt is the hope of ONEshot to prevent the preventable: with the proper application of education, advocacy, and opening pathways to accessible vaccinations, ONEshot’s mission is to eradicate meningococcal disease from university housing, and help eradicate the ongoing epidemics in the menin-gitis belt of Africa.

OverviewWhat You Need to Know

What is it?Meningococcal meningitis is a bacte-rial infection. This infection causes inflammation of the membrane sur-rounding a human’s brain and spi-nal cord, leading to symptoms that include commonly interchangeable ailments such as a fever, stiff neck, and headache, all of which can be prevalent within mere hours of infec-tion.

Is it serious?Without immediate medical treat-ment, infectees will die in as few as two days, and even with early medical attention up to 20 percent of patients will also die. Among the survivors of the infection’s initial onslaught, upwards of 20 percent will experience permanent and life-changing ailments such as deafness, blindness, or learning disabilities.

Is it contagious? The bacteria are transmitted from person-to-person through droplets of respiratory or throat secretions from carriers. Close and prolonged con-tact – such as living in close quarters (including a dormitory) with an infect-ed person (a carrier) – facilitates the spread of the disease.

Am I at risk?Meningococcal meningitis is a bacte-rial infection effects the lives of nearly 8,000 individuals in the United States per year, particularly among college students. College freshmen, especial-ly those who live in dormitories, are at a slightly increased risk for bacte-rial meningitis caused by meningo-coccal disease, compared with other persons of the same age.

PreventionHow to Protect Yourself

Meningitis is completely preventable. Here’s how:There are currently two vaccines li-censed in the United States to protect against meningococcal meningitis.

The Advisory Committee on Immuni-zation Practices (ACIP) has issued the following recommendations regarding the use of vaccines for college stu-dents.

•College freshmen who want to reduce their risk for meningococ-cal disease should either be ad-ministered vaccine (by a doctor’s office or student health service) or directed to a site where vaccine is available

•Colleges should inform incoming and/or current freshmen who plan to live or already live in dormi-tories or residence halls about meningococcal disease and the availability of a safe and effective vaccine.

As you make your way through ASU Move-In Day, you will presented with the opportunity to get vaccinated through ONEshot by someone from ASU Health Services.

Meningitis Abroad: The Meningitis BeltWhile meningitis is a serious issue in the United States, an area just south of the Saharan Desert (known as the Meningitis Belt) has experienced over 80,000 cases of Meningitis in the past year – an epidemic, as determined by the World Health Organization.
