Objective: To construct a catapult or series of catapults in order to test an

experimental variable.Core Question: How is the experimental variable accounted for?

Drill: 1. Think about your experimental variable.

2. In your Log Book create a list of variations on your variable.

Once your catapult has been created, what do you

need to do next?

Create your Materials List and Experimental

Procedures

Materials Tips1. Your catapult is one of your materials.2. Include amounts with each of you

items.3. Include only those materials necessary

for the conducting of the experiment. Do not list a data chart as one of the materials.

4. The materials will be referenced in the procedures.

Problem Question : How does the color of the base structure of a catapult affect the distance a marble is launched?

LAUNCH PROCEDURES1. Place the catapult on the floor in an open area.2. Pull the spoon over the fulcrum bar so that 13 cm of

the spoon is in front of the bar. The cup part of the spoon should be upward and towards the back of the carton.

3. Pull the spoon downward so that it is at a 5° angle below the horizontal.

4. Place a marshmallow in the cup part of the spoon.

LAUNCH PROCEDURES5. Release the spoon so that the marshmallow is

launched. 6. Mark the landing point.7. Measure the distance from the catapult to the

landing point. Record this distance in the data chart.

8. Repeat steps 2-7, 4 more times.9. Find the average of the 5 trials. Record the

average in the data chart.10.Paint the carton another color.11.Repeat steps 2-10, 4 more times. (Skip step 11

the last time.)
