Morgan says in his introduction to 1 Corinthians: "The measure of failure on the part of the Church

is the measure in which she has allowed herself to be influenced by the spirit of the age . .

. We are sometimes told to-day that what the Church supremely needs is that she should catch the spirit of the age.

A thousand times noA thousand times no. What the Church supremely needs is to correct the

spirit of the age." The bottom line is thisThe bottom line is this: Is the Is the churchchurch influencing the influencing the citycity, or is , or is

inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

10 Things Specified:10 Things Specified:

Page 18: O’Neal church of Christ, Athens, Alabama Dec. 14, 2014

1. Fornication. Fornication-- Gal. 5:19-21 Sexual Immorality. Generic term covering all Sexual sins. "illicit sexual intercourse", I Cor. 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man

doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

Page 19: O’Neal church of Christ, Athens, Alabama Dec. 14, 2014

2. IdolatryIdolatry I Cor. 10:14 Flee it

Webster, “the worship of idols or excessive devotion to, or reverence for some person or thing.” An idol is anything that replaces the one, true God. The most prevalent form of idolatry in Bible times was the worship of images that were thought to embody the various pagan deities.

Keep yourselves from idols…I Cor. 10:14 “Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.”

Page 20: O’Neal church of Christ, Athens, Alabama Dec. 14, 2014

3. AdulteryAdultery Matt. 15:19,20..Out of the heart.. “voluntary sexual intercourse between a

married person and a person who is not his or her spouse.”

19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

Gal.5:19,20

#4 Homosexuality#4 Homosexuality

Rom. 1:26, For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27, And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

Page 22: O’Neal church of Christ, Athens, Alabama Dec. 14, 2014

5. SodomitesSodomites ( a generic term for all homosexual practice). Rom.1:27

Page 23: O’Neal church of Christ, Athens, Alabama Dec. 14, 2014

Homosexuality = Sodomites

From history: “Homosexuality was rampant in the ancient

world; 14 out of the first 15 Roman emperors were bisexual or homosexual. At the very time Paul wrote, Nero was emperor. Nero castrated a boy named Sporus and then married him (with a full ceremony), brought him to the palace with a great procession, and made the boy his "wife." Later, the emperor lived with another man, and Nero was declared to be the other man's "wife.“ “

Page 24: O’Neal church of Christ, Athens, Alabama Dec. 14, 2014

6. ThiefThief Eph.4:28 Quit stealing. Young boy 7. CovetousCovetous (greedy people) 1 Corinthians 5:10. It is remarkable that the apostle always ranks “the

covetous” with the most abandoned classes of people ..

8. DrunkardsDrunkards Gal. 5:21; ..envyings,murders,drunkenness, revellings,

And such like:of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Page 25: O’Neal church of Christ, Athens, Alabama Dec. 14, 2014

9. RevilersRevilers-- The same word which in 1 Corinthians 5:11, is rendered railer; - A reproachful man; a man of coarse, harsh, and bitter words; a man whose characteristic it was to abuse others; to vilify their character, and wound their feelings.

10.ExtortionExtortion (Swindlers) ; greedy of gain, and oppressing the poor, the needy, and the fatherless, to obtain money

No Wonder, Many of the Corinthians, hearing, believed and were baptized… They found forgiveness of their sins They were called “saints” of God. I Cor. 1:2 “unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to

them that are Sanctified in Christ Jesus, Called to be saints, with all that in every place call

upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Both theirs and ours….” Sanctified in Christ Jesus …Called upon the name of Jesus Christ Our Lord…”

Cleanse us from all ‘unrighteousness”

Page 36: O’Neal church of Christ, Athens, Alabama Dec. 14, 2014
