The Women in Philanthropy awardcelebrates influential leaders who mobilize the power of women to advance the common good in our communities.

“Bonnie’s initiative and strategic vision, fueled by her incredible energy, created the first Tocqueville Women’s Leadership Program in the country. Now, 12 years later, her efforts are continuing to support the exceptional work being done by United Way in our community. We are all indebted to Bonnie for her leadership and focus on the future.”

“Among the many things I learned this year is that the Greensboro community has so many worthy charitable needs that all of them cannot possibly be met. I came away, however, convinced that United Way of Greensboro is the most efficient and effective way to address those needs.”

Recognizing over 3,000 philanthropic leaders who demonstrate their commitment to caring for people in our community by contributing $1,000 to $9,999 annually.

Cornerstone Society members are the “gems” of Greater Greensboro and are represented by four levels of Cornerstone Society giving: diamond, emerald, ruby and sapphire.

African American Leadership (AAL) is composed of approximately 200 leaders contributing $1,000 or more annually to the work of United Way to strengthen the community through volunteerism, leadership development, and financial giving.

In response to feedback from the AAL’s Community Engagement survey, United Way will launch the African American Male Initiative in 2011. The initiative will provide tutoring, mentoring, and leadership development to African American males in low performing schools.

THE CORNERSTONE SOCIETY AFRICAN AMERICAN LEADERSHIP

During the summer of 2010, African American Leadership started an annual Summer Backpack nutrition program in partnership with Guilford County Schools. Over 80 families at Gillespie Park Elementary received weekly backpacks to ease the financial strain and provide students food when school is not in session.

Women’s Leadership empowers a community of women to become philanthropic leaders.

Approximately 450 diverse women contribute $1,000 or more annually to United Way to improve the lives of children and families.

Together they create opportunities to cultivate leadership skills while networking and volunteering throughout Greensboro.

The first annual Handbags Against Hunger fundraiser raised funds for children in Guilford County who are without food and adequate nutrition.

Over 450 Young Leaders (YL) make a positive and lasting impact by volunteering and contributing $120 or more annually.

Young Leaders hosted Winter Wonderland, an evening to celebrate philanthropy in Greater Greensboro benefitting Partners Ending Homelessness. Winter Wonderland connected young professionals to established community leaders with the overarching goal to create positive change in the Greensboro community.

Fifty Young Leaders volunteered, walked, and/or ran in The Human Race, sponsored annually by the Volunteer Center. The team raised over $3,000 for United Way and were recognized as the 2nd place walking team overall.

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP YOUNG LEADERS

“I volunteer for Young Leaders because in my heart I believe in the camaraderie of mankind. We are all in this together and lending a helping hand is the least I can do for someone in need.”

CINDY EDWARDS YL MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS CHAIR United Way of Greater Greensboro
