PNoy leads relief operations in ‘Nona’-hit Northern Samar

CATARMAN, Northern Samar, (PIA) –

President Benigno S. Aquino III visited Northern

Samar to assess the extent of damage caused by

typhoon Nona that hit the province in December

14 .

The President conducted an aerial inspection of

the typhoon-damaged area before attending a

briefing.

Upon arrival at the municipality of Catarman,

he proceeded to the provincial capitol for a

briefing with the local officials led by Governor Jose

L. Ong on the extent of damage, the pre-emptive

actions and the disaster response made by the

local officials and the mayors of the affected

towns as well as the Regional and Provincial Disaster

Risk Reduction and Management Councils.

Governor Ong expressed his profound

appreciation to President Aquino for visiting the

province after the destructive typhoon caused

widespread damage. “Your mere presence, your Excellency, has

eased the sufferings of the people of Northern

Samar, ipinakita niyo na hindi kami nag-iisa,” Ong

said.

During the briefing, the Governor reported

92% or 606,256 individuals from the 137,549 families

were affected, 9 persons are still missing with 13

confirmed deaths.

Partially damaged houses was recorded

at 79,293 while totally damaged houses reached 41,

892.

Damage to infrastructure was estimated at Php

2.09 billion while agriculture sector incurred Php211

million production loss.

The President likewise led the distribution

of relief goods, GI sheets, among others to

typhoon-affected families.

Accompanying the President were some

of his cabinet officials such as Health secretary

Janette Loreto Garin, Defense secretary Voltaire

Gazmin, DSWD secretary Corazon “Dinky”

Soliman, Energy secretary Zenaida Munzada, DILG

secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento and former DILG

ILOILO CITY, Dec. 28 (PIA6) --- The

Department of Health (DOH) appealed to parents

to watch their children to avoid firecracker-related

injuries or deaths.

In a media release, DOH strongly advised

parents and caregivers not to allow children to

use firecrackers especially in welcoming the New

Year.

The DOH also called on the cooperation of the

local government units and the Philippine National

Police, if not to ban the selling or use of firecrackers

in the community, at least foster community

fireworks display in order to control the use of

fireworks and firecrackers

In case of an injury due to firecrackers, DOH

advised that the wounds must be immediately

washed with clean running water until all visible dirt

and gunpowder residue is removed.

The patient must immediately be rushed to the

nearest health facility for proper medical attention.

Meanwhile, according to the online reports of

the Aksyon Paputok Injury Reduction (APIR) of

DOH-6, six persons in Western Visayas were

injured by firecrackers during Christmas celebration.

DUMAGUETE CITY, Dec. 28 (PIA) – Three

students from Silliman University will be joining the

roster of student leaders who will participate in next

year’s Ayala Young Leaders Congress.

Sillimanians Genin Raya Amiscaray, Cedrick

Louis S. Antiquina and Nikko Paolo V. Calledo

have made through the rigorous three-phase

selection process and will be with 81 other

student leaders in the country in the weeklong

youth leadership program of the Ayala Group of

Companies which is slated in February, according

to Mark Raygan Garcia, chief of the university

information and publication office.

Amiscaray is an economic student in the

said university while Antiquina and Calledo are

taking up medical technology and accountancy,

respectively.

All three students are in their third year

are consistent honor students. Amiscaray, who is

the reigning Miss Silliman is also active in

student leadership while Anitiquina is a college

representative in the Student Assembly.

On the other hand, Calledo is the incumbent

vice president of the university student government.
