October is the month of the Rosary… I thought it could be helpful to remember that the Hail Mary, the prayer we repeat for more than fifty times each time we pray the Rosary, comes from the Bible. “Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee.” The first words come from the greeting of the Angel Gabriel to Mary when he comes to an-nounce the birth of our Lord. “In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!"” (Luke 1:26-28). These words are the words of an Angel, coming with a message from God himself. We speak to our Lady with the words of God. “Blessed art Thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb.” Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth. “When Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe (John the Baptist) leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Ho-ly Spirit and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!"” (Luke 1:41-42). She addressed our Lady with words inspired by the Holy Spirit. These are the words we use every day to ad-dress our Mother! Mary herself had said, filled with the Holy Spirit: “All generations will call me blessed” (Luke 1:47). “Jesus.” Jesus is the center of the Hail Mary! The reason we love Mary is Jesus! “Holy Mary.” We call Mary “holy” because the Angel called her “full of grace” and because Elizabeth called her “blessed.” These words have basically the same meaning. If any Chris-
tian could be called “saint” or “holy one” (cf. 2Co 13:13), why could we not call “holy” the one that the Bible calls “full of grace” and “blessed among women”? “Mother of God.” Elizabeth said to Mary: “And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? (Luke 1:43). “The Lord” and “God” mean the same thing. “Pray for us sinners.” The apostle James says: “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16). If we sinners can pray for each other, how much more effective the prayer of a righteous person would be, and how much more still the prayer of the Holy Mother of God! “Now and at the hour of our death.” Because at the hour of our death our eternal reward will be decided, we ask our Mother to take care of us not only now, but particularly “at the hour of our death.” “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?” (Mt 16:26). “But God said to the rich man, 'You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?'” (Luke 12:20). The best business we can make is to save our souls. And mind you, this includes to save our neighbour. That is why we do not say “pray for me, a sinner” but we ask “pray for us, sinners, now and at the hour of our death.” Amen! Fr. Andrew Ayala Cobourg, Ontario Used with permission
The Hail Mary
As we look to September we start to sense
the seasons will be changing, summer
holidays are over and school will resume
soon. As for the Knights of Columbus we
sense the busy seasons are ahead of us and
the needs of others will be our first
concern. This means our acts of charity
towards others comes from within
ourselves with respect to our Brotherhood
and the people we serve.
Each one of us has Christ within us and
should live our life with Christ. You would
think the work of charity, i.e. love, would
be easy putting the needs of other ahead of
our own needs but as we often see this is
not the case.
So let's focus on our strengths and
remember strength does come in numbers.
We see the worldwide results that the
Knights of Columbus achieve year after
year.
Now is the time to put our plans to task,
commit ourselves to help our community
and Parish. We will also let our Parish
and Community see us at work and
know who we are and know what we do
and feel comfortable in requesting
our services. This is what Star councils do.
This is what Charity is and
this is what Council 1008 will achieve this
year.

GRAND KNIGHTS MESSAGE
Brother Knights
I hope all of you had some time to relax and
enjoy the gift of a beautiful summer that we
just experienced. It sure did fly by! Now that
it is basically behind us, your children,
grandkids and even your great grandkids for
a select few of our more mature Knights will
be preparing to start a new school year. Some
of these children will be eager to get back to
meet their old friends or to start new
friendships. Conversely, there will be others
who will be apprehensive of the challenges
they may have to face whether with
strengthening friendships or with their
scholastic encounters. These experiences are
no different than what we as Knights face
each year. If we make a conscious effort to
rekindle our old friendships and are open to
welcoming others into the Knighthood, we
will insure our council will remain strong and
grow. However, like our children as
previously mentioned, there is more to a
council than just building a social network.
Just like in our scholastic studies when we
were younger, we must continue to build
upon our spiritual teaching. Life learning
does not stop when we finish school, nor
should our spiritual learning stop, it must be
for life! Granted it can be a struggle but
perseverance, prayer and faith will help us
through it. Let the beginning of September be
our new year where we as Knights focus on
our spiritual growth, broaden our friendships
and open ourselves up to the new challenges
that may come our way. If we always keep
God in our hearts, our struggles will be
diminished.
God Bless

DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHTS MESSAGE
The summer recess is over now and the new
calendar year for the 4th degree will begin on
Tuesday September 20th. Prior to that is the
installation of officers in Smith Falls on Septem-
ber 18. I am unable to attend due to my
granddaughter’s wedding that weekend but Tony
has sent a message to all officers of the 4th degree.
All officers of the Assembly should attend this
installation. They should advise me by Sunday
Sept 11th if they are going or not and whether
their wives will be joining them. This is so a prop-
er amount of food can be prepared.
The Masters for the Districts in Ontario and Man-
itoba have been announced. Sir Knight Norman
Lafontaine has been appointed as our Master for
a second two- year term. After this term a new
Master must be named as you are only allowed to
serve two terms.
There will also be a one-day exemplification on
Oct 29th. Again the Candidate fee is
$ 70.00. The exemplification will be held at St Jo-
seph’s Church, 127 Liberty Street in Bowman-
ville. I have all the data and registration forms
for this exemplification. All candidate registration
forms and Form 4’s are to be received by the Mas-
ter by October 1st so if anyone is interested in at-
tending or joining the 4th degree on that day,
please have your info to me the September 20th
meeting. Candidates will have to be voted into
our Assembly at that meeting. Also, please call
or e-mail me for copies of the information if you
are planning to attend the Exemplification.
On August 14, six members of the 4th degree at-
tended a special function in Flinton. The rosary
was said as we walked around the block in front
of the church and then there was a Mass followed
by a lunch. It was the end of a special mission at
the Church and they had a priest from Australia
preside over the mission. It was an enjoyable
function and of course country lunches are a large
meal at the best of times.
I hope to see as many as possible at our first
meeting. Please come out and support your
Assembly.

Worthy Sir Knights
Hope everyone enjoyed the hot summer we
just had.
I had the privilege of attending the 134th
Supreme Convention in Toronto. What a
wonderful experience. This was an excellent
opportunity to meet our Brother Knights from
across the globe. This is truly where you see
and realize the good charitable work our
Brother Knights do in their local communi-
ties.
September is upon us and it is time to start
thinking of recruitment.
As mentioned in the previous newsletter, the
next 4th Degree Exemplification will be hosted
on Saturday, October 29th by Courtice
Assembly 2825. It will be held at St. Joseph’s
Church. The information packages have been
distributed to all Faithful Navigators.
Remember all form 4’s, registration forms and
monies must in to me by October 1st.
I am sure Genoa Assembly 863 will have a
good number of new Sir Knights as was the
case for the previous Exemplifications.
Fraternally, SK Norm Fontaine Master 1st Ontario District.
Master's Report
Brother Knights:
September is fast approaching and,
realistically speaking, this is the
month that really commences the
work in our councils in our district.
Traditionally September is the month
where everything begins afresh,
however, it is also known that the
year for the Knights of Columbus
working with their councils is calen-
dar year July to July, however, not
much can be done in the summer
months as people are away and, quite
frankly, I believe that councils need a
time out to take a break work wise.
September is a great month to start
afresh our councils. As your District
Deputy I want to bring to the table a
program which deals with camarade-
rie, unity and, what we like to call
it , fraternity. I trust you will find me
to be relaxed in my approach with all
councils. I expect to work with you
and not dictate to you, however, there
will be times where, as a representa-
tive of State Council, I must discuss
policy changes and new programs
with you. I expect to have, not only
your full co-operation, but to deal
with these issues as they arise in the
future in an open way.
I recently attended the Seminarian's
Appreciation Dinner held at South
Mountain, Ontario. I was there with
brothers Knights of our district, par-
ticularly council 1008. I struck by the
obvious. The message was, not only
from the Seminarians, but priests at
large, is that they are "here to serve".
That message should not end there.
This is really a two way street. Itwas
obvious to me that priests are people
too. They are subject to, not only
emotions we may feel, such as .joy,
frustration and sometimes anger that
occurs in our daily lives, but they have
to deal with such emotions mainly on
their own. When priests enter the
vocation of priesthood they give up
family life and adopt a life which ap-
pears to be, to most of us, one of
aloofness. That is far from the case.
Priests that I have met are very socia-
ble and love to have contact with their
parishioners. I feel that the priests in
our district are like that.
State has commenced this year a
program called The Domestic Church.
What this really means is that, we as
parishioners, should connect with our
priests, take them out to dinner, take
them to social events, find out their
likes and dislikes, enjoy time with
them and socialize with them. As I
said before, priests are people too.
Priests have foremost in their mind
their parishioners and it is about time
that we put priests in our life.
I look forward to representing District
73 and the Councils therein Peter Girard Distict Deputy 73

Newsletter Advertisers
Brothers:
Now that September is here we will soon be
looking for both new and renewal advertisers
for our newsletter. Our rates will be remain-
ing the same for the year 2017. They are
$40.00 for a single; $60.00 for a double and
$80.00 for a quadruple space.
It would be a great help if you could assist us
with our efforts in obtaining a small number
of new advertisers for our newsletter. Each
year we do lose some advertisers and we are
hopeful that new businesses can be found to
fill the void. If you are aware of somebody
who would like to place an ad all that is need-
ed to start the process is a copy of the ad and
the size that they would like to order. Pay-
ment is not necessary until the beginning of
the new year at which time I will send out an
invoice.
Thanks for your help,
