... and here are some Greeks wondering what she is made of. Empedocles, ‘the mediator’, came up with the final decision: She is, he said, made of Earth and Air and Fire and Water.

LOOK! Here is David Bowman, a modern scientist, agreeing!

‘.. the Greeks had it right with their classification of fire, air,

earth, and water …’

The World on Fire ( New Scientist, Oct 10, 2009)

Page 4: One the bride

By Shakespeare’s era the idea of The Four Elements

had blossomed into a descriptive language.

Shakespeare is using this language to write these spectacular sonnets.

In sonnets 44 and 45 he equates flesh with Earth and Water, Air with thought, and

Fire with desire.

Edition printed in London in 1609.

Page 5: One the bride

You can see that the idea of the Four Elements had developed to symbolises functions of consciousness that supply our brains with the information we need to construct and respond to our world.

We connect to Earth, the matter upon which life is based, through our SENSES. Water supplies us with FEELINGS. The blood pumping around the body responds to pleasure and pain. Through our ears we ‘feel’ sound waves and respond to them emotionally. BANG ... If I make a sudden loud noise behind you, you will jump, this is a feeling called ‘surprise’. These two make up Shakespeare’s ‘flesh’. Oh heavy tears! Fire defines our ability to acquire information from light. Light waves project pictures into our brains through our eyes; we soon acquire an archive of recognisable images through which we immediately comprehend what we see: this is called INTUITION. Then we THINK about things. Thinking uses huge quantities of oxygen - perhaps that is why thinking is correlated with Air.

Page 6: One the bride

It is called The Anima Mundi.

Anima is ‘female’ meaning ‘soul’; Mundi means ‘world’.

Jung was seriously interested in symbolic languages. He called the symbols ‘archetypes’. In his book Aion he published this ancient diagram in which each

of the four quarters of the circle represent one of the four elements.

Page 7: One the bride

Air

Earth

Fire

Water

In her book Relating, Liz, a Jungian, has reworked the Anima Mundi to include the result of mixing two elements together. I need to boil some water to make a cup of tea. Oh yes ... I need ‘hot water’. Hot water is intuitive feeling.

Page 8: One the bride

Liz is also an astrologer. Astrological symbolism draws deeply on the idea of the four elements.

Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are practical and down to Earth.

Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, the Air signs, are rational and intellectual.

` d

g_ cCancer, Scorpio and Pisces, the Water signs, feel their way through life.

a

Aries, Leo and Sag express the qualities of Fire. They are intuitive, passionate and impulsive.

In her book, Relating, Liz writes about the three Air signs, the three Water signs, the three Fire signs and the three Earth signs.

But LOOK ... There are three very different expressions of each of these elements on Liz’s model.

Page 11: One the bride

I had often wondered why Pisces was described as intuitive-feeling when Pisces is a water sign and intuition is fire.Is this a good position for Pisces?

How could I put dry, highly structured, business-like Capricorn anywhere but here, in Empiric Thinking. Here this serious, responsible energy can use the thinking apparatus to work out what it needs in order to achieve a position of authority in the social order.

c EarthIt was way back at the end of the 80’s, I was at an Oxford Summer School explaining this model to a friend. She didn’t like this position of Libra. Later that day Fiona Griffiths - a Libran - gave a talk on Venus. ‘We think of Libra as cool’ she said, ‘because she is an air sign, but what is love without a little fire.’ Right … position exonerated.

TEST

Then I needed way of testing this model and I decided to join up the signs according to how the Sun goes around the Zodiac. Why did I think this was important ? When you have familiarised yourself with this information and have seen my chart you will, perhaps, understand why ...

You can think of Saturn as the hard disk upon which we store information, but information needs editing.

Uranus is a powerful disruptive force. Just what we need.

Page 75: One the bride

‘The astrological Uranus is perceived as being perpetually engaged in a struggle with Saturn Kronos, aiming to break restricting barriers. …This battle of the gods is an innate living pattern in all our psyches …’

‘As Chronos castrated Ouranus, so astrologically does Saturn cut off the creative impulse and potency of Ouranus. This image encapsulates the basic war in all our psyches’.
