Shalom Chaverim, I was recently posed this question: Do you consider yourself a Jewish American or an American Jew?

I consider myself to be an American Jew because, if I considered myself to be a Jewish American, I fear that my descendants would lose their Jewish identities and become Americans without a Jewish identity. It is crucial that we safeguard our American and Jewish identities. By calling myself an American Jew I am emphasizing my Jewish identity, because that is the part of my identity which requires more effort to safeguard living in America.

I have heard Jewish parents say that they would not send their children to a Jewish day school because their children will not be exposed to enough American culture and diversity. Nonsense! First of all, the vast majority of Jewish day schools, including the Delaware Valley’s own Albert Einstein Academy, celebrate American culture. Second of all, our children will be exposed to plenty of diversity simply by growing up in America. Many of our children participate in activities outside of school, such as sports, dance, art, music etc., that afford them the opportunity to interact with a diverse group of Americans. Additionally, they watch TV and go online, providing them with access to American culture that celebrates diversity. Our primary concern should not be that we are not interacting with other Americans (which we will all do as I just mentioned) or assimilating (the Pew study has shown we are doing too good of a job assimilating), but rather that we are not preserving our Jewish identity.

We are blessed to live in a country that allows and encourages us to preserve our Jewish identity. Since we are no longer forced to remain distinct by anti-Semitism, the onus is now on us and us alone

Adas Kodesch Shel Emeth is proud to be honoring two very special couples at its Gala Dinner Dance on Sunday, June 1 at 5:00 p.m. The gala evening will include a reception, dinner, tributes and dancing. U.S. Senator Chris Coons will be the guest speaker.

Sandye and Jerry Turnauer are receiving the B’tzelem Elokim (in the image of G-d) Award for their tireless efforts to help both individuals and institutions throughout the community. True exemplars of how to treat humanity with dignity, Sandye and Jerry have often worked behind the scenes to provide financial and emotional support to individuals in need. Numerous institutions in the community have also benefited from their generous support. Sandye has served in leadership roles at Congregation Beth Shalom and the Wilmington Chapter of Hadassah and has been active in the Va’ad Hakashruth of Delaware. Jerry, founder and owner of Bayshore Ford, has been recognized nationally by his fellow dealers.

Suzy and Rabbi Peter Grumbacher are receiving the AKSE Jewish Community Award for their longtime leadership of and service to the Delaware Jewish community. Rabbi Grumbacher served Congregation Beth Emeth as rabbi for 37 years, including 27 years as its senior rabbi. He has been a leader in fostering positive community relations, including as chairperson of the local chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. Suzy has served the community in numerous capacities. She is past president of the Wilmington Chapter of Hadassah and is currently the VP of Education for the Northern Seaboard Region.

Please join us in honoring these beloved members of our community. It promises to be a most enjoyable evening. Responses to the gala invitation are due by May 16. Also, contributors of $36 or more by May 10 will be recognized as patrons in the gala ad journal. If you have misplaced your invitation, please call 302-762-2705 to make your reservation.

We Invite You to Sponsor a Shabbat Kiddush

Dear Fellow AKSE Congregants: The members of the Kiddush Fund Committee invite every family to sponsor at least one regular Shabbat Kiddush every year for $36. Your name will be posted in the Shabbat newsletter as the sponsor of the Kiddush that morning. Please think of a Simcha that is coming up that you would like to share with your congregational family such as a birthday, anniversary, retirement or any other happy occasion. Our goal is for each family to annually show support for the Kiddush fund which enables us to come together to celebrate and share happy occasions on Shabbat. Please contact the office at 302-762-2705 to find out if your desired Shabbat date is available for sponsorship. Please contact Judy Berlin at 302-762-3649 to discuss your special requests. Additional items like a special cake or kugels can be included for an additional charge. Thank you in advance,

The Kiddush Fund Committee

to maintain our Jewish identity. We have seen that the only way we can preserve our Jewish identity in an environment that is so welcoming of us is to take concrete steps to safeguard it. The Pew study told us what we already knew: those who fill their lives with more Jewish activities are more likely to remain Jewish and pass on their Judaism to the next generation. Those who raise their children without much of a Jewish identity are more likely to watch their children lose whatever little Jewish identity was passed on to them. I will give you a case in point. I met another student in college who was a Jewish atheist who celebrated Christmas. When asked why an atheist would love Christmas, she explained that she was not exposed to much Judaism and Christmas was fun. From her perspective it makes sense, since the vast majority of Americans celebrate Christmas. Why should she miss out on the fun?

In 1790 President Washington sent a letter to the Touro Synagogue of Rhode Island promising that “the stock of Abraham that dwells in this land” would be welcomed in America. America has kept its word. It is our obligation to take affirmative steps to ensure that the stock of Abraham continues to dwell in the land as a proud and distinct group of Americans.

A Message from Sisterhood

In March we finished yet another very successful Purim Holiday season both in terms of spirit and profit. Sharon

Berry again deserves so much of the credit for this! Thanks to her wonderful idea last year, we established the

custom of everyone at AKSE receiving a Mishloach Manot bag. Please see the names in this Shofar of the very

generous people whose contributions made this possible. As if shopping for and preparing 250 bags along with

her helpers was not enough, Sharon also spearheaded our Hamantash baking project! Both of these projects

turned a great profit and make it possible for Sisterhood to have the cash to replace both a broken freezer and a

broken refrigerator in the shul kitchen within a year's time. And don't forget that we present the synagogue with a

generous contribution at the annual meeting. Yashir Ko’ach to Sharon and all her helpers for an amazing job well

done!

The people who helped make the dough were: Rhonda Lehr (Chair), Laurie Hazen, Jim Lehr, Sandy Rosen,

Rhoda Meizell, Audrey Katz and Arleen Kessler.

The people who helped with the Hamantashen baking were: Sharon Berry (Chair), Judy Berlin (Head Roller),

Elizabeth Davis (Assistant Roller), Dan Berry (Oven Man), Carol Brown, Mitzi Echt, Lena Elzufon, Shirley

Fisch, Morris Freschman (he helped Sharon put together orders and bag up the Hamantashen for the Purim Bags),

Sheila Goldlust, Lolly Gross, Laurie Hazen, Lidia Ini, Harriet Jacobs, Ann Jaffe, Huguette Piha (also adds to the

Prune filling), Libby Plafker, Linda Schreiber, Dianne Seidel, Judy Seltzer, Wendy Shlossman, Irma Skversky,

Betty Slomowitz, Cathy Vinograd, Sylvia Wagman, Ella Zukoff and Mel Zussman.

Sharon Berry, Dan Berry, Carol Brown, Lou Brown, Ellen Feingold, Morris Freschman, Shirley Fisch, Laurie

Hazen, Huguette Piha, Dianne Seidel, Judy Seltzer, Wendy Shlossman, Cathy Vinograd and Ella Zukoff helped

make up the Purim Bags.

Special thanks to Cliff Packer and Charles Wiley who helped every step of the way. Thanks also to Sharon

Marshall, Carol Burg and Arlene MacLaren for helping us collect the orders and contributions. Sylvia

From Sharon Berry, spreader of Purim happiness extraordinaire:

As you can see from all these names, it takes a tremendous group effort to get this job done, but we all have fun

doing it. I call it the Jewish Quilting Bee.

Our Hamantashen are very special, made with lots of love. We received many compliments and through our

efforts we raised over $8,000. Thanks to everyone and forgive me if I've forgotten anyone.

Until next year, Sharon Save the date! Sisterhood year end event

will be June 8.

Quoting an answer as to why we eat dairy on Shavuot from The Jewish Book of Why informs us of some very ancient traditions. In today's world we tend to know the tradition, follow it and are not sure of the reason for its origin. The reason for dairy has several explanations. The ones I chose to share with you refer to Mount Sinai and the words found in Song of Songs, "honey and milk under thy lips implying that like milk products and honey are the words of the Torah which are pleasant and good for our spirits. Another explanation for this tradition of eating dairy on Shavuot is based on a legend that when the Israelites reached their homes after receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai, they had little time to prepare a meat meal, especially since they needed time to slaughter an animal. Instead, they hastily put together a dairy meal which could be more quickly prepared. These recipes are for a Shavuot dessert that could also be enjoyed at a Break the Fast or any time you are craving a fantastic Cheese Cake.

Pineapple Cheese Cake Pineapple Mix 1 large can of crush pineapple 1/2 cup sugar 2 Tablespoons cornstarch Cook in sauce pan till it boils looks thick and clear. Remove from stove and let cool Crust 8 Tablespoons sugar 8 Tablespoons shortening 2 eggs 2 cups flour Pinch salt Mix and press into greased 9 x 13 pans (I prefer a glass pan) be sure to press crusts up the sides of the pan. Set aside Filling 2 8 oz. packages cream cheese 10 Tablespoons sugar 4 eggs 2 heaping Tablespoons flour 2 Tablespoons vanilla 2 Tablespoons fresh lemon juice 4 cups milk Mix all ingredients except milk in bowl for 2 minutes, slowly add milk to mixture and blend. I place this filled crust on a cookie sheet because the milk brings the mixture up to the top of the pan and it is easier to place in the oven. Assembly Spread pineapple mixture over crust and slowly pour the cheese mixture over the pineapple. The pineapple might rise a bit, but will settle during the baking. Garnish with cinnamon if you like. Bake 350 degrees for 1 hour, cool and enjoy. This recipe was given to me about 38 years ago by a dear friend, Myra Berkowitz. Our friends and family have raved about this recipe for all these years. I hope you will enjoy it. Refrigerate the cheese cake and serve cold. Another "Quick and Easy" cheese cake recipe was shared by all the neighbors in the first community I lived in when my kids were very young. We met so many nice neighbors and shared recipes with each other. My neighbor Kathy Ferguson gave me this one and again, it has always been a perfect dessert. It is made with cake mix, you can make a Chocolate cheesecake or a Vanilla cheese cake (with a fruit topping if you choose). Depending on which flavor cake mix you pick. The chocolate one is almost like a mousse cake.

cream cheese, onions, tomatoes, orange juice and coffee/tea- begins at 9:00 am followed by the speaker at 9:30

am. Cost is $6 with an advance registration (call the office at 302-762-2705), $8 at the door.

Mark your calendars for these future dates: Alas, no more breakfasts until the fall, may I suggest enjoying

eggs, bagels and cream cheese etc. purchased directly from Shop-Rite (with AKSE gift card!) as an alternative

until then. (the editor)

Chocolate Cheese Cake grease a 9 x 13 pan and set oven at 350 Crust 1 egg 1 Tablespoon oil 1 cup of cake mix that is from a packaged kosher cake mix, dark chocolate flavor. Or, use vanilla cake mix for plain cheese cake that you plan to serve plain or topped with fruit. Use fruit topping of your choice. Mix ingredients together press into prepared pan. Set aside and prepare the filling Filling 2 8 oz. packages of cream cheese 1/2 cup sugar 3 eggs Rest of package of cake mix 1 1/2 cups milk 1 teaspoon vanilla Blend all ingredients until smooth and pour into prepared crust. Bake for 1 hour. When cake is fully cooled you can top the chocolate flavored cake with whipped cream and chocolate shavings or sprinkles. If it is the plain vanilla cake, top with cinnamon or fruit topping. Examples; cherry, or blueberry pie filling. These recipes are easy, the pineapple cheesecake is more natural than a recipe using a cake mix, but the outcome is a beautiful presentation of a delicious dessert. Honestly, whatever you make, it will definitely be gobbled up by any cheesecake fan. They are all "Killer Yummy". Please enjoy whichever one you try and let me know what you think.

Have a great Holiday... until next time Meryl
