Cerro Olivares. One of the highest unsealed summits of the world outside Asia, Cerro Olivares, fell to nine Chilean climbers from La Serena in early 1971, who climbed its southwest slopes. They were led by Claudio Canut. This peak had been claimed as ascended by an Argentinian party in December 1965, but upon the publication of its summit photographs it proved that the 1965 party had ascended one of the many summits of the massif located wholly within Argentinian terri­tory. The main summit (20,510 feet) is located on the border between Chile and Argentina.
