An A t t e n b o ro u g h m o m e n t . . .

We hiked through clouds to the cliff-tops on the northernmost Shetland Island.

We were so engrossed with the puffins waddling by,

we didn't want to go any further but our guides said 'you have to see the gannets'.

Reluctantly, we walked the extra 200 metres and stood with our jaws dropped almost to the sea at the sight we found.

Over 100,000 gannets, and otherbirds nest here, and only a privileged few travellers reach it.

Yet another moment that I am a very glad I am traveller, not a tourist.

EXPLORE SOME OF THE MOST REMOTE ISLANDS IN THE WORLD

SCOTLAND Explore coastal fi shing villages and the historic castles of the famous Scottish

clans. Keep an eye out for puffi ns on the dramatic cliff edges. Learn the century-

old tradition of whiskey making. Follow in the footsteps of the infamous Vikings and

Gaels and enjoy birdwatching on the Outer Hebridean Islands.

ICELAND With just over 320,000 people, Iceland is one of the least populated countries. The Vikings arrived c.870 and permanently settled the island they called ‘snow land’. The small

country has a rich history and is steeped in mythology and legend from elves to ‘hidden

people’ to Norse Gods. Today there is a thriving art scene and welcoming culture.

FAROE ISLANDSThe Faroe Islands are a self-governing

territory of Denmark with a population of 50,000 people and 80,000 sheep. The

Faroes people are mainly descended from Viking settlers and today have their own culture and language, which is similar to

Old Norse. When visiting the Faroes you are never more than 5km from the ocean.

Scotland, Faroe Islands & Iceland Footsteps of Vikings and Gaels

NATURAL WONDERS, SUPERB WILDLIFE, UNIQUE CULTURE & FASCINATING HISTORY Follow in the footsteps of Vikings and Gaels and discover the stunning islands of the North Atlantic. Explore the dramatic coastlines of Scotland, the Faroe Islands and Iceland and immerse yourself in the region's ancient history.

Our voyage begins in Scotland, known for its rich tapestry of history, culture and rugged, natural beauty. Harsh lands are fringed by a dramatic coastline, broken up by the occasional fishing village and quaint seaside town. Passing through the Outer Hebrides, the UK’s most remote islands, our voyage continues to the unique landscape of the Faroe Islands. An archipelago in the middle of the North Atlantic, the Faroe Islands are some of the most remote, inhabited islands in the world. Famous for their natural beauty, rolling green hills and grass covered roofs, the country is dominated by steep mountains, sheep, and the largest colony of storm petrels in the world. The weather is volatile, but this doesn’t seem to bother the millions of seabirds that settle here.

Our last stop on our North Atlantic adventure takes us to Iceland, home to ice covered volcanoes, immense glaciers and geothermal lagoons. A stark, volcanic land with a warm heart, Iceland’s shallow fjords are a haven for whales, dolphins and seals alike and there is a surprising array of wildlife. This superb voyage links three of the gems of the North Atlantic. Each day we explore off the ship in the company of expert guides, cruising in the Zodiacs and enjoying walks on shore.

Scotland and Ireland Golf Expedition

INCREDIBLE GOLF COURSES. SUPERB LANDSCAPES. RICH HISTORY. ANCIENT CULTURE. No places are as linked to the history of golf as Scotland and Ireland. The earliest mention of golf is a 1457 Scottish Act of Parliament where, ironically, it was banned because it distracted from the military sport of archery! Today more than a dozen of the World’s Top 100 Courses (Golf Digest) can be found in the region, a pedigree we are proud to match with the advanced capability and comfort of our expedition ship – RCGS Resolute.

This expedition offers a totally unique take on a traditional golfing holiday. Not only does your ‘floating hotel’ negate the need for constant packing and unpacking, but you’ll also enjoy breathtaking views and convenient access to the golf courses, as we shuttle you effortlessly from one to the next.

Our voyage begins in Dublin. We then sail up the west coast of Scotland, passing the picturesque islands of Islay, Mull and Skye and playing golf at the hidden gems of Machrihanish and Askernish. From here we sail west to play Ballyliffin in Ireland. Further north we spend a day in the Orkney Islands before sailing south to Inverness, where we have access to two outstanding courses. At Aberdeen we find ourselves on the doorstep of both Cruden Bay and the Royal Aberdeen, our final courses before the journey ends in Edinburgh.

Non-golfers will also have plenty to do, with quaint Celtic seaside towns to explore, bike rides, afternoon hikes and delicious afternoon teas.

I t’s a pretty cool place...We want to take you to an incredibly vast and breathtaking place, where a giant sheet of ice links three continents and wildlife freely roams, swims and flies across them. Where for just three months each year the ice retreats, the sun emerges, and this incredible world comes alive, inviting us in.

This is the Arctic, poles apart from Antarctica. It is warmer; there is more wildlife, there are ancient settlements, and polar bears replace penguins. Polar bears are the kings, revered and feared by all. The seas thrive with fabled creatures, including the narwhal, with its unicorn like tusk, and the white beluga whales.

The wild, remote Canadian Arctic is filled with Inuit settlements and tales of brave exploration by man and mammals. Dazzling scenery stretches to the horizon and the definition of ‘frontier’ needs no words. Greenland’s ‘iceberg factory’ pushes out 20 million tonnes of brilliant white skyscrapers, and soaring cathedrals with crystal spires. The Norwegian Arctic is the most northern, and more compact, luring headline hunting explorers for centuries and seabirds by the million. It is also the realm of the polar bear and takes you to within 100km of the North Pole.

In Canada, the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) dances across the sky from August till April, giving you the widest time frame to catch this amazing sight.

We really want to help you experience the magic of The Arctic, to be immersed in the vastness, to be astounded by the wildlife, and to be inspired by the human determination to explore and succeed.

We look Forward to talking about it with you soon.

Welcome to The Arctic

NORWEGIAN ARCTIC - SVALBARD Svalbard is a more compact destination so you don’t need to cruise far to see scenery, history and wildlife. Located less than 1,000km from the North Pole it is the best place for polar bears. We focus on the north and west, being the most interesting, diverse and wildlife rich parts of the archipelago.

CANADIAN ARCTIC Wildlife, history, and all encompassing skies crown the never ending landscapes. Reminders of exploration, trading outposts and even Cold War era bases, lie throughout. The area has huge amounts of wildlife which, due to the vastness is spread over a large area. Our Arctic partners at One Ocean Expeditions have several hot spots they have found over the years for polar bears, giving you a great chance of seeing them.

WHAT THE KEY REGIONS ARE AND WHY WE THINK THEY’RE SPECIALSpanning three continents, The Arctic is diverse and divided. Wildlife spreads across the vastness, with a great varierty found in most locations. Geographic and historic differences set some areas apart, so this is our guide to help you figure out where you want to go, and what awaits you there.

GREENLANDThe largest, non-continental island in the world, and its least populated. Greenland is a vast, remote land with a unique culture. It brings ancient traditions to a modern world. Brilliantly colourful villages dot the whiteness. The massive icecap produces all of the Arctic’s soaring icebergs.

ICELAND A tiny country with a population of a mere 250,000. Iceland offers incredible scenery and unparalleled geological attractions. Iceland is where glaciers reach for the skies and deep blue mountain lakes fill steep valleys and are surrounded by sharp green peaks on all sides. Hidden hot springs in secluded valleys far far away from civilisation, will relax and calm you as you take in the spectacular views.

THE NORTHWEST PASSAGEIn the 15C explorers started searching for a much hoped for passage through the Canadian Arctic linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, to open up trading routes. Many endeavours met with disaster. In 1850 a way was finally discovered, and in 1906, Roald Amundsen completed the first passage from Greenland to Alaska.

THE FORWARD ARCTIC GUIDE

Anyone fortunate enough the see the lights will be beaming with the memories for a long time. They’re like a huge theatre curtain flowing across the sky with colours ranging from yellow to green to pink, to blue, with a million stars providing a spectacular background. Luckily Yellowknife in Canada has some of the best in mid Aug-Sep. Perfect to add to an Arctic trip.

NORTHERN LIGHTS - AURORA BOREALIS

POLAR BEARS, THE KINGS OF THE ARCTICThe hope of seeing these majestic animals lures most people north. Being predominantly predatory hunters they are usually spread far and wide, making finding them equivalent to an African game safari. Svalbard is great due to its remoteness and limited human population, and Canda has some great hotspots too, as Rose discovered recently. Churchill on the shore of Canada's Hudson Bay is the best land vantage point, although only for 6 weeks a year. We think the best way to see polar bears is by ship where you can go to them rather than hope that they will come to you.

Page 15: ONE OCEAN EXPEDITIONS Arctic, Europe Canada · 2019. 8. 23. · ONE OCEAN EXPEDITIONS 4-6 ISLANDS OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC 7-9 WELCOME TO THE ARCTIC & WILDLIFE GUIDE 10-14 SPITSBERGEN

PHOTOS IN THIS BROCHUREWe like to keep it real, so we avoid using stock photos, and mainly use photos taken by ourselves and our travellers. Most of the photos in this brochure have been taken by us, or by travellers on the actual trips. This one was taken by Rose on her 2017 Arctic trip. We include photography tips in your preparation to help you capture the magic. All Arctic expedition cruises have a professional photographer too, to give you tips along the way.

The Attenborough moment...Relaxing after lunch we met some polar polar bears who will stay with us forever.

On a small ice floe a mother and 2 cubs were feasting on a narwhal. They were so relaxed and focussed they didn’t mind us dropping by. The Captain slowed the ship, and we hung out with them for an hour, as they ate, groomed, suckled, and finally rested.

This was more than a photo opp, it was an invitation into their world, no fear, no barriers and no time limits.

It was an Attenborough documentary, although we weren’t watching it, we were part of it.

This is the reason and the reward for travel. Thank you for taking me there.

Spitsbergen Encounter(Photography Symposium)

A CLASSIC EXPLORATION OF SPITSBERGEN AND THE VAST SVALBARD ARCHIPELAGOThe Norwegian territory of Svalbard and the islands that make up the archipelago offer a tremendous wildlife and birdlife experience, as well as a fascinating lesson in glaciology. The islands were first used as a whaling base in the 17th and 18th centuries and are now celebrated as a breeding ground for many seabirds, along with marine mammals and polar bears.

Our expedition vessel is perfectly suited for remote polar exploration. With her high ice classification, we are able to push further to the north along the edge of the ice pack. It is here we frequently encounter the icon of the Arctic – the polar bear – hunting for seals and other protein sources to sustain them through the Arctic summer.

Throughout our journey we enjoy a comprehensive series of presentations by polar experts, providing an excellent background to the expedition. Days are busy with shore excursions to places of historic interest, visits to wildlife colonies, viewing the exquisite native flora and soaking up the stunning landscapes. Short or long hikes onshore are another feature along with regular cruising in the Zodiacs. Sea kayaking is another popular option. Our voyage focuses on the western and northern coast of Spitsbergen, and as far north as the permanent pack ice. This area has the highest concentration of wildlife and places of historic and scenic interest in the archipelago.

Brilliantly colourful villages dot the whiteness. The massive icecap produc-es all of the Arctic’s soaring icebergs.

THE NORTHWEST PASSAGEThe quest for a trading route linking the At-lantic and Pacific oceans lured men here for over 4 centuries. Many died, and more died trying to find them. In 1905, Roald Amundsen found a way through, com-pleting the passage in 3 years. Thankfully our journeys are quicker than that.We follow their routes and visit historic sites along the way.

CANADIAN ARCTIC AND GREENLAND

THE FRANKLIN EXPEDITIONThe most amous and mysterious quest for The Northwest Passage is the Franklin expedition of 1845. Sir John sailed from London with high hopes and confidence, but was never seen again. His lead ship was finally found 2014 (with the help of One Ocean), and we will get you close to her resting site.

BAFFIN ISLANDThe fifth largest in the world is indented by fjords, and a glacier-laden spine with peaks up to 2,147m extending throughout most of its 1,500km.It is be-lieved to have been visited by Norse explorers in the 11th century and is mostly protected to preserve its jagged mountain peaks, deep valleys, spec-tacular fjords, and marine coastal wildlife.

The Canadian Arctic is huge. It is wonder-fully rich and diverse, with boundless land-scapes, thriving wildlife, and thousands of years of human settlement. It offers an endless paradise of wilderness. With more than 30,000 islands, including three of the world’s largest, it really does seem like another world. We love it’s scenery, history, mystery, and abundant wildlife. Mountains and tundra stretch to the horizon and exploring onshore is a constant discovery. Visit rarely seen an-cient settlements and take extended hikes exploring the scenery. Remote beaches are strewn with bones, relics and fossils, reminding us of exploration and survival in these barren lands.

Classic Northwest Passage& Greenland - Westbound

CELEBRATE CANADA'S ARCTIC CULTURE, HISTORY, WILDERNESS AND WILDLIFE. This iconic voyage explores the colourful villages and vast icefields of Greenland, and the stunning fjords of the Baffin Island coastline while cruising Canada’s remote and historic Northwest Passage. Rich history is accompanied by breathtaking scenery, as we sail into deep fjords, past enormous icebergs and discover the rich culture and people of the region.

We follow in the footsteps of the early Arctic explorers such as Franklin, Amundsen and Larsen, exploring the archipelago of islands and channels that create Canada’s high Arctic region. This is the home of the polar bear, muskox, caribou and walrus and we journey through the wild Canadian North aboard our celebrated ice-rated expedition ship

Wildlife is a major draw card of our expedition, but there is plenty of historical interest and the stories of that ill-fated expedition by Sir John Franklin nearly 170 years ago is central to our voyage. Franklin made his last heroic foray into the Arctic in 1845 with two ships and 129 men, never to be heard from again. The fate of the expedition remained a mystery – until September 2014 – when one of the vessels, HMS Erebus, was discovered in a remarkable state of preservation in the frigid waters of the Victoria Strait. The find is undoubtedly one of the great archaeological discoveries of the last 100 years and has been likened to the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb. This is small ship expedition cruising at its best.

Journey into the NorthLabrador, Torngats & Greenland

REMOTE COASTAL PORTS, SOARING MOUNTAINS, RICH CULTURE AND HISTORY This voyage links numerous historic locations on Canada’s East Coast, including a French-built fortress, a known Viking settlement, remote mission locations and isolated fishing ports. We journey northwards from the more temperate climate found in the Maritimes, onto higher latitudes. Subtle changes to vegetation and wildlife species can be noticed and our expert guides will interpret and explain these changes throughout the journey.

The region features strong cultural diversity and we encounter the Nunatsiavut people in small communities along the coastline of Labrador. Numerous wildlife species are found along this coastline including bears, seals, whales and both migratory and resident birds. A particular highlight of our voyage is a visit to Torngat Mountains National Park. Leaving Canada, we navigate across the Davis Strait to the spectacular coast of Greenland - home to colourful villages, rich culture, friendly locals and stunning icebergs that break off the immense glacial systems.

Our expedition vessel is the perfect platform for exploring the remote bays and fjords of this spectacular wilderness as many locations can only be accessed by ship. A final highlight awaits as we venture into one of the world’s longest fjords and take a walk on the icecap itself! This is remote, small-ship expedition cruising at its best.

Canada's East Coast 'Fins and Fiddles'

COLOURFUL FISHING PORTS. LIVELY MUSIC. RICH HISTORY. INCREDIBLE WILDLIFE. The islands of Canada’s Atlantic coast feature a rich and diverse culture, found in small fishing communities and remote out ports. The area is well known for its Celtic traditions and the music and cuisine of the region is celebrated the world over. Historically, this is one of the most fascinating places in North America.

Our exploration of Eastern Canada’s Maritime region starts and ends in the historical town of Louisbourg, situated on Cape Breton Island. The region also offers a staggering abundance of wildlife, including prolific birdlife, numerous seal and whale species and we even encounter the fabled wild horses of Sable Island. Beaches and lagoons provide viewing opportunities for numerous shorebirds and as we cruise towards the mouth of the St Lawrence River, we hope to see the great baleen whales such as the humpback, minke and blue whale - as well as grey and harp seals. These rich feeding grounds act as a magnet for wildlife.

A ship-based exploration allows us to visit places that are otherwise inaccessible or difficult to get to for land-based visitors, all achieved within a manageable time frame. Daily shore excursions with expert guides, a range of wonderful activities and an inspired dining menu make this an ideal way to experience this enchanting region of Canada.
