INTRODUCTION WELCOME (bienvenida) to your One Mission house (casa) building project! This is your guide to the construction process. If this is your first project, we recommend that you keep this entire manual handy, it contains vital information and helpful tips for building your house successfully and efficiently. It is designed to help you progress step-by-step through the construction process. The manual can be separated into sections so that various teams can work on different areas of the construction at the same time. In order to complete the construction in the allotted time frame, Steps 2 and 3 can be completed at the same time as Step 4. Step 7 can be completed at the same time as Steps 8 and 9. The house you are constructing will be 22’ wide by 22’ long. There will be two windows (ventanas) and two doors (puertas).

DAY ONE

STEP 1 PREPARATION

1.1 Location & Layout

The homeowner along with the One Mission staff has already determined where the home is to be built. They have taken into consideration their neighbors, existing structures, and the family’s needs. Please make every effort to honor their requests. Prior to starting meet with the homeowner and sketch out a rough floor plan to determine the positioning of doors and windows. Be aware that placing your doorways near the corner of the room allows for more usable space. Some useful Spanish terms: Window ventana Door puerta The homeowners have already worked to level the work site. Clear the area for the slab. Don’t assume anything; ask the homeowner where to place all items cleared from the work area.

1.2 Site Preparation

Concrete Mixing Area The location should be: • Close to the water supply • Easy access to the house • A location where the mess will not be a concern

House Framing Area The location should be: • Away from the concrete mixing area • Out of the way of concrete delivery to the house slab

1.3 Material Inventory

The materials required to construct the house are listed below. Prior to beginning construction take time to inventory the items to ensure that you have all the necessary materials. If any material is missing be sure to let a One Mission staff member know as soon as possible so the materials can be purchased or located.

1.4 Separate and sort the lumber

It is very important to guard against cutting the 12’ two-by-fours needed for the roof. Find thirty six (36) straight and strong 12’ boards for the roof (no large knots or splits). Mark and set them aside so that they won’t be cut or used for anything else.

STEP 2 PREPARING THE PAD YOU WILL:

• Level the Ground • Build the foundation form • Square and level the form • Dig a footing trench • Level the sub-grade

2.1 Level the ground

• Level an area at least 23’ X 23’ allowing an additional 2’ of work space around the outside.

• Be sure the area is parallel to the property – measure from a fence of adjacent building.

• Wet the area after it is level and pack the soil with feet, shovels and rakes.

2.2 Build the foundation form

• Use (8) 12’ two-by-fours to construct the form. It is not necessary to cut the boards if you lay them out properly.

• The inside dimension of the form with be 22’ X 22’. • Use a full 8’ 2X4 to connect the 12’ 2X4’s on the long sides.

2.3 Square and level the form

• Place 1 stake at each corner of one of the long sides of the form to secure the form. (be sure the side is parallel to the property)

• Measure diagonally from corner to corner. • Square the form by sliding the unanchored side until both diagonal measurements

are the same. When the measurements are equal the form is square. • Stake around the outside of the form to hold it in place using a string line to ensure

the sides are straight. • Beginning at one corner, nail the form to the corner stake. • Beginning at the nailed corner, level the form using a 4’ level (or survey level and rod,

if available). The photos show the form for a single house but the process is the same.

2.4 Dig a footing trench around the inside of the form

• Dig the footing trench no larger than 8” wide and 10” deep using a round point shovel.

2.5 Level the Pad

• Make sure the soil inside the form is compacted. • Place a 12’ 2X4 on edge across the top of the form, and measure the distance from

the bottom of the two-by-four to the leveled ground. • Add or remove dirt until the depth is between 3 and 4 inches. If the depth is greater

than 4 inches you may run out of cement.

STEP 3 POURING THE FLOOR SLAB

3.1 Mix the concrete

Recipe for Concrete 5 shovels of gravel 1 shovel of cement powder 1 pinch of fiber Mix dry ingredients together until thoroughly mixed. Add water gradually mixing until mixture is the consistency of oatmeal. • You have 5 bags of fiber. Each bag of fiber should complete about 1/5 of the slab. • Pour the concrete into the form, working from one end to the other, leveling as you

go. Don’t bump the form out of square or level!

3.2 Tamp and screed the concrete • Tamping and screeding creates a flat, level surface making the concrete easy to

finish to a smooth surface. • With the concrete fairly level, tamp the surface of the concrete. This drives the larger

aggregate and down and allows the finer aggregate to move to the surface. Don’t tamp too much!

• Use a straight, 12’ 2X4 laid on edge to screed the surface of the concrete. With one person on each end of the 2X4 lay it across the forms. Move the 2X4 back and forth with a sawing motion. At the same time advance the 2X4 slowly forward always leaving a small amount of concrete in front to fill in the low spots.

3.3 Place the mud sill anchors

Mud Sill Anchors are used to secure the house to the foundation.

• Place the anchors after the concrete is tamped and screeded. • The mud sill anchors are placed 6” from each corner and equally spaced along the

edge of the slab, three anchors in each 11’ section. • BE CAREFUL NOT TO PLACE AN ANCHOR IN THE DOORWAY!

3.4 Trowel the concrete

Concrete can be very different depending on quality and coarseness of materials, timing and quality of screeding, and even time of day and temperature. If the surface after screeding is still rocky, tamp it again — and hard! After screeding trowel the concrete with a smooth trowel (the trowels with rounded corners work best) to get an even surface. You can now remove the temporary form in the middle, fill the void with concrete and smooth with a trowel. Once the surface is fairly smooth, it is best to leave it alone for 20 to 30 minutes. The best finish is obtained when the concrete has been allowed to dry until it is no longer shiny. When you are ready, use finish trowels (large, smooth metal trowels) to make the surface completely smooth. Using scrap wood to stand on, begin from the center of the slab and work your way out, smoothing over your own board marks as you move. Apply a little water where necessary (spray bottles are handy). Tip up the leading edge of the trowel and use lots of downward pressure. This is the secret to good finish troweling. Use the trowel as you would a butter knife: more angle for scraping, less angle for smearing. After the concrete is trowelled check it periodically to ensure that is not cracking. Cracking indicates that the concrete is drying out too quickly . To avoid cracking ‘mist’ the concrete with water periodically.

STEP 4 FRAMING WALLS AND ROOF

YOU WILL:

• Build 2 – 8’ wall sections • Build 4 – 7’ wall sections • Build 5 – rake walls • Build 4 – roof sections • frame in window and door locations

IMPORTANT POINTS:

• BE SURE TO MEASURE AND CUT ALL LUMBER TO EXACT LENGTHS FOR FRAMING. • ALWAYS USE 3” NAILS FOR FRAMING.

4.1 Building the 7’ standard walls

To build the 7’ walls cut 2” X 4” boards to the following quantity and length: • 8 – 11’ • 28 – 7’0”

To build the 8’ walls cut 2” X 4” boards to the following quantity and length: • 4 - 10’ 6 3/4’ • 14 - 7’9”

4.3 To add a door to a wall

Measure the outside dimensions of your door. Make your doorway opening 1/2” wider than the door and 1/2” taller than the door. Important: You will cut the bottom plate out of the doorway after the walls are up, so measure accordingly. ie: measure from the bottom of the wall.

4.4 To add a window opening to a wall

First, verify the size of your project’s windows. Size the rough opening of your window 1/4” larger than the window dimension.

4.5 Build 4 Exterior rake walls You Will: Build 4 rake walls for the exterior of the house. The rake walls are identical with the exception of the allowance for door and window locations determined by the home owner. To build the rake walls cut 2” X 4” boards to the following quantity and length:

• 4 - 10’ 8 ½” • 4 - 10’ 8 ¾” • 4 - 7’ 0” • 4 - 7’ 1 ½” • 4 - 7’ 3” • 4 - 7’ 4 ¾” • 4 - 7’ 6 ½” • 4 - 7’ 8 ¼” • 4 - 7’ 9”

4.6 Build 1 Interior Rake Wall You Will: Build 1 rake wall for the interior of the house. The interior rake wall will fit between the 2 – 8 foot walls sections and butt up against the exterior 7’ wall. To build the rake walls cut 2” X 4” boards to the following quantity and length:

• 1 - 10’ 10 ¼” • 1 - 10’ 10 ½” • 1 - 7’ 0” • 1 - 7’ 0 ½” • 1 - 7’ 2 3/8” • 1 - 7’ 4” • 1 - 7’ 5 ¾” • 1 - 7’ 7 3/8” • 1 - 7’ 9”

4.7 Build roof sections You Will: Build four identical roof sections per the following layout. Be sure to follow the measurements exactly so the roof sheeting will fit properly later. To build the four roof sections cut 2” X 4” boards to the following quantity and

lengths: • 8 - 12’ • 28 - 11’ 9” • 12 - 1’ 9 ¾”

THIS COMPLETES THE WORK REQUIRED ON DAY ONE. If you have time on day one, you may choose to sheet the walls while they are on the ground. Only sheet the walls on the ground if you are comfortable with your ability to ensure that the walls will be square. The studs are laid out in such a manner that the 7’ walls are sheeted completely from one end to the other. The rake walls allow for an overlap of 3 ½” on the end that adjoins the 7’ walls.

DAY TWO

STEP 5 RAISING THE HOUSE You will:

• Raise the walls • Nail the walls to the concrete slab • Nail the mud sill anchors • Plumb the walls • Install the doors • Install the roof sections • Install bird blocks

5.1 Raising the walls Remove the Concrete forms Remove the pegs and 2x4 forms from the concrete. The edge of the concrete is quite fragile at this point so use care to not break away the edge of the concrete. Take the forms apart, remove the nails and clean the forms as much as possible. Back fill sand in along the concrete to protect the edge of the slab. Mark the Slab Measure the slab width and length to ensure that the measurements match the form layout from day one. Also measure the diagonals to ensure they are equal. At each corner of the slab measure in 3 ½” and make a pencil mark. Measure along the length and width of the slab between the pencil marks to ensure that the measurements are correct and the pre-framed walls will fit. Adjust the pencil marks to ensure the dimensions are correct – it is OK if the measurement to the edge of the slab is less that 3 ½”. Measure the diagonals to ensure that they match each other and correct the pencil marks until the diagonals are correct. Check once more that the length and width are correct. Mark the location of the center rake wall, offset your mark 1 ¾” (half the wall width) and snap a chalk line across the slab to mark one or both sides of the center rake wall. The chalk lines will be used to align the inside of your walls and fit the house together.

Erect the Walls Note: Erect the walls and tack together the corners with nails but do not completely nail them together until the walls are plumbed at the next stage. Beginning at one corner erect one 11’ wall and one rake wall using the pencil marks as guides to align the inside of the walls. Use a 3 ½” nail (leave the head exposed) to anchor the top of the walls temporarily. Brace the walls with 2X4 or have helpers hold them to ensure they don’t fall. Continue erecting the walls going in one direction until all walls are standing, tacked together and lined up with the chalk lines.

5.2 Nail the walls and the mud sill anchors

Once all walls are up and aligned with the chalk lines nail the walls to the concrete between each stud using 3 ½” nails. After nailing to the concrete bend the mud sill anchors over the outside of the wall and nail them in with 2 ½” nails.

5.3 Plumb the walls

Place a level upright on the outside wall at each corner. Using the level bubble push the top of the wall in or out until the bubble is level. Once the house corner is plumb in two directions nail the corner together. Continue at each corner until all four corners are plumbed. Repeat this process at the center rake wall as well. Use a 2” X 4” nailed diagonally on the center rake wall to plumb the middle of the 7’ and 8’ walls. Nail the brace to the bottom plate of the rake wall and holding the exterior wall plumb, nail the diagonal brace to the upright studs.

Once all walls are plumbed nail the corners together at 2’ intervals and nail the wall sections together at 2’ intervals. Nail the interior rake wall to the exterior walls.

5.4 Place the roof sections on top of the walls You will:

• Place the four roof frame sections on top of the walls. • Nail the two sections on each side together at the center of the house. • Leave an equal amount of overhang on each end of the 22’ length of the house. • Toe-nail the roof frame at each corner of the high wall to secure the frame. • Use a string line along the roof frame to make the roof frame straight along the high

wall toe-nailing the roof frame in place as you go. • Square the roof frame by measuring diagonally from corner to corner and pivot the

roof frame until the diagonal measurements are equal. Taking care to make sure the roof frame is straight and square will make sheeting the roof much easier.

• Once the roof frame is straight and square finish toe-nailing each rafter to the top of wall. Use two nails, one from each direction, on each rafter.

ADDING THE ROOF SECTIONS

5.5 Place bird-blocks on the roof frame

You will: Cut and place blocks in the voids between the walls and roof sheeting to seal openings.

• Measure and cut 2X4 to fit the spaces between roof trusses at the top of wall. • Nail the 2X4 pieces in place flush with the outside of the wall.

STEP 6 SHEETING THE ROOF AND WALLS

6.1 Sheeting the roof You will:

Cover the roof with 1/2” sheeting. • Beginning along the high side lay out the first row of sheeting. • Adjust the distance between rafters to ensure proper spacing (especially at the 4’

and 8’) measurements before nailing the sheeting in place. • Cut one sheet in half in order to stagger the joints between rows. • Once all sheets are in place nail the sheets to all rafters at 8” intervals.

6.2 Installing the plywood sheeting on the outside of the walls You will: Install 1/2'” plywood sheeting to cover the exterior walls of the house. Spend some time planning out the sheeting to minimize waste.

• Install the plywood with the rough side out. • Sheet the wall in two rows with the lower row being flush with the bottom of the wall.

STEP 7 ROOFING THE HOUSE You will:

• Lay felt paper and tar paper and nail trim along the edge of the roof.

7.1 Lay the felt paper on the roof

• Beginning on the low side of the roof and allowing 3” of paper to overhang each edge, roll the paper out along the entire length of the roof.

• Align the paper with the roof and staple it in place. • Roll out the second row overlapping the first row by 3”. If the roll runs out allow 6” to

12” of overlap with the start of the next roll. • Continue rows until the entire roof is covered.

7.2 Lay the rolled sand-and-tar roofing paper on the roof

• Follow the same patter as for the felt paper but this time nail the first row of roofing paper every 1’ along the outside edges of the roof.

• Nail the top edge of the roofing paper every 2’. • Be careful when driving nails that they do not tear the paper. • Make sure there are not waves or bubbles in the roofing paper. • Prior to laying the next row of paper, tar the top 2” of the previous row. • Lay the next row overlapping the 2” and nail through the overlap every 6”. • Joints should be tarred, overlapped and nailed in the same manner. • Continue until the entire roof is covered leaving a 3” overlap at the high side of the

roof as well.

7.3 Trim the roof edge

• Install 1”X4” boards along the roof edge face to hold the tar paper in place. • Use 2 2 ½” nails placed every two feet along the 1”X4”. • The 1”X4” should be flush with the bottom the of the roof face so rain water is not

trapped on the roof. • Trim off any tar paper than protrudes below the 1”X4”.

STEP 8 PREPARING THE HOUSE FOR STUCCO You will:

• Wrap the house with felt paper • Wrap the house with chicken wire • Frame the doors

8.1 Check the Window Openings Prior to proceeding with preparing the house for stucco, ensure that the windows will fit in the window openings. If the windows do not fit you must make modifications to the frame.

8.2 Put felt paper on the walls

You will: Cover the entire exterior walls with black felt paper

• Beginning at the doorway and leaving 4” of overlap, roll out the felt paper flush with the bottom of the wall and work you way along the entire length of the house, keeping the paper tight and nailing the paper with 1” nails as you go. End at the doorway leaving 4” of overlap.

• Place the next run of paper so there is approximately 2” overlap of the bottom run.

8.3 Hanging chicken wire on the house Proper hanging of the chicken wire makes the job of stuccoing the house much easier so follow the instruction carefully. Method:

Place a row of roofing nails at 6” intervals along the entire length of the top and bottom of the exterior walls. Leave the nail head sticking out only enough to hook the chicken wire.

Attach wire to bottom row of nails • Beginning in a doorway and leaving 1’of extra wire wrap the house with wire ending

back at the doorway and leaving 1’ of extra wire. • Beginning at the doorway have one person hook the bottom (double-strand) wire to

the nails at the bottom of the wall keeping the double strand taught as you go. Have a second person finish the nail in order to keep the wire taught and continue in one direction all the way around the house.

Stretch the wire

• At each corner of the house stretch the wire up the wall as far as possible and nail it in place.

• After the four corners have been stretched move to the door opening and stretch and nail the wire. Nail along the door and window frame every 4 inches.

• Again working your way from one corner, at each wall stud location stretch the wire upwards as far as possible. Estimate how far you can stretch the wire and then place a roofing nail leaving enough of the head exposed to hook the wire.

• Stretch the wire up over the nail and finish the nail. A short piece of pipe works well for stretching the wire up over the nail.

• Continue this process at each wall stud location. When you reach the next wall corner the wire should be completely flat along the wall.

Attach wire to the top of wall

• Repeat the above process only this time you will be stretching the wire down from the top of the wall.

• If you have to start a new roll of wire be sure to leave some overlapping wire.

NOTE: If done properly the top and bottom runs of chicken wire should be overlapping and lay completely flat along the wall. If there are bumps in the wire they can be removed by using a nail as a lever to twist the loose wire in a loop to remove the slack in the wire. Also make sure any loose ends of wire are twisted together so they don’t protrude through the stucco.

• After all bumps have been removed nail the chicken wire at 2’ intervals all around the house.

• Cut the wire out of the door and window openings.

8.4 Window Installation

You will: Install the window so it extends ¼” beyond the exterior wall.

• Ensure the window is right side up – the rollers should be on the bottom. • Ensure the inside of the window is on the inside of the house -the latch should be

toward the inside of the house. • Insert the window into place and nail or screw it to the 2”X4” frame.

8.5 Door Installation

Determine which way the homeowner would like the door to swing and hinge the door, with the pin on top, accordingly. The door should be flush with the 2”X4” on the inside of the house. Check the full swing of the door and be sure there is 1/4” of clearance all the way around. If the door swings properly, finish the installation by Installing the lock set. Build a door stop around the entire doorway. This is the trim that the door will shut against. You may have to cut a 1”X4” board lengthwise to create the desired width. One person from the inside of the house needs to hold the door in the closed position. A second person from the outside can then push the trim up flush to the door and nail it in using 2 ½” nails. The door stop should be tight against the door and be even with the outside wall of the house.

8.6 Trim the doors

• Using 1”x4” boards and 2 ½” nails trim the outside of the door. • The trim will act as a nice edge for the stucco to butt up against.

STEP 9 STUCCOING THE HOUSE

You will: • Perform a final inspection of the house. • Mix the stucco and apply two layers of stucco over the chicken wire to finish the

house.

9.1 Inspect the House

• Ensure there are not humps or voids in the chicken wire. • Trim is all complete and nailed in place. • You don’t want anyone nailing on the house once stuccoing has commenced.

9.2 Mix sand and cement

Recipe for First Coat of Stucco

• 16 round shovels of screened sand • ½ bag of cement powder Mix dry ingredients together completely Add water, mixing until the mixture reaches the consistency of mashed potatoes.

9.3 Apply the first coat of stucco

• Apply the stucco upwards from the bottom of the wall using a stucco hawk and trowel.

• The first coat does not have to be perfectly smooth and should be somewhat rough to allow the second coat to adhere.

• It is OK, and even desirable, for the chicken wire to be exposed through the first coat. Once the first coat is complete it is time to take a break before applying the second coat. In most cases the second coat will be applied the next day.

9.4 Clean up and wash tools

• Ensure all tools are washed and free of any stucco materials. • Store all tools for the night.

DAY THREE

STEP 10 FINAL COAT OF STUCCO You will: Apply the final coat of stucco to provide a nice finish to the house.

Recipe for First Coat of Stucco

• 14 round shovels of screened sand • ½ bag of cement powder Mix dry ingredients together completely. Add water, mixing until the mixture reaches the consistency of mashed potatoes. • Wet the wall using a hose or buckets of water. This will allow the second coat of

stucco to adhere better. • Apply the stucco to the wall and let it set until it begins to harden. • The wall can be smoothed by using a wet sponge or rigid styrofoam in a circular

patter. Be sure to not rub so hard that you completely wash off the second coat. Have a bucket of water available and rinse the sponge or styrofoam often.

STEP 11 CLEAN UP TOOL INVENTORY

When finished with your tools each group should…

1. Gather all tools from around the worksite. 2. Empty out your tool bin COMPLETELY (please no trash, loose nails, etc.) 3. Place the hand tools in the tool bin in an orderly fashion. 4. Clean ALL concrete tools! Ladders, Mixing Bins, Wheelbarrows, Cement Tools) 5. Move all tools to the edge of the job site for easy pick up.
