CAVALIER HONOR CORD SERVICE PROGRAMThose seniors who have completed 100-250 voluntary service hours through four years ofhigh school wear honor cords at graduation. The honor cords worn for service hours aregold for 200 or more hours, silver for 150-199 hours and bronze for 100-149 hours.

RENAISSANCE GOLD CARD ACHIEVEMENTRenaissance is a school-wide recognition program. To earn a gold card a student musthave a 3.30 or higher grade point average, no more than one excused absence and no dis-cipline referrals. The students wearing a tri-color red, green, and gold honor cord haveearned a gold card every year for 4 years.

RENAISSANCE LEADERSRenaissance is a nationally recognized program that has proven to successfully motivateand encourage students to reach new academic, attendance, and behavioral heights. LP’sRenaissance Committee is student-led. To note students who have participated in Renais-sance both junior and senior year, graduates wear cords of green.

LINK CREW LEADERSLink Crew Leaders are chosen for their abilities as role models and purveyors of informa-tion to underclassmen. These students are the guiding force behind motivating freshmenby defining success and showing students what it means to be a Cavalier. Link CrewLeaders are actively working to redefine the culture and environment of the school into apositive atmosphere, which includes all aspects of academics. These students are wearinga royal blue honor cord.

THE STATE SEAL OF BILITERACYThe State Seal of Bi-literacy is a recognition given to graduating students who havedemonstrated high levels of proficiency in English and in the areas of reading, writing,listening, and speaking in a foreign language. To recognize such individuals, an officialseal from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) is placed on the graduate’s diplomaand transcripts. In order to receive this commendation, a student must demonstrate pro-ficiency in English as well as all content areas of another language on proficiency assess-ments.

BLOOD DONOR HONOR CORDSRed Honor Cords are awarded to students who successfully donate blood four timesthrough the LP sponsored blood drives.

MILITARY HONOR CORDSCords of red, white, and blue signify that the student has enlisted in the United StatesArmed Forces.

ACADEMIC GOWNS

Academic costume worn at commencement exercises has a historydating from the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries.

Faculty members wear caps, gowns and tassels which designate degree.Some will also wear hoods.

The CAP is black mortarboard. The tassel, after the degree has beenconferred, is worn over the left front quarter of the cap.

The Doctor’s HOOD is easily recognizable, with wide velvet edgingthat indicates the degree earned and full exposure of the lining. The Mas-ter’s hood is the same length as the Doctor’s hood but does not fully ex-pose the lining, and the velvet edging is not as wide. For both hoods, thelining indicates the col¬ors of the institution conferring the degree. Thecolor of the velvet hood trimming is distinctive of the academic field towhich the degree earned pertains.

The GOWN signifies the degree. The Doctor’s gown of black silk isfaced down the front with velvet; the bell-shaped sleeves are trimmed withthree crossbars of black or colored velvet distinctive of the subject to whichthe degree pertains. The Doctor’s gown is worn open. The Master’s gownof black material is also worn open. It has very long sleeves, oblong inshape and closed at the base; the forearms protrude through notched slitsnear the elbows. The Bachelor’s gown, which is of black material, is wornclosed. The gown is distinguished by its long pointed sleeves.
