United Way of Southern Nevada HEROES | 1
Dear Friends,
On behalf of United Way of Southern Nevada, we extend our heartfelt thanks for your support. This past year marked the 60th year we’ve steadfastly pursued our mission to unite our community to improve people’s lives.
Among the numerous ways we created positive change in Southern Nevada last year, we created our Community-Based Agenda, a road-map to improving lives focusing on early education, high school achievement, post-secondary attainment, and workforce supports. We also launched Community Connect, an online hub for local information; and with the support of countless individuals and organizations throughout our community, we supported children and families as they worked to build pathways out of poverty.
While we celebrate the successes of 2017, we must also recognize the challenges and opportunities it presented to our community. In the wake of October 1, we saw Southern Nevada come together like never before to help those affected, their families and the brave first responders. It has been truly inspiring to experience how our community has united in the months following, and we stand ready to assist with future needs.
As we celebrate our 60 year anniversary, we remain focused on our vision of creating a better community for all. We are fortunate to partner with tens of thousands of stakeholders – including individual volunteers, donors, nonprofits and companies – to make our community stronger. We look forward to working with you in the year to come.
Sincerely,
Scott Emerson Edward GarciaPresident and CEO Board ChairUnited Way of Southern Nevada United Way of Southern Nevada

“I became involved with United Way of Southern Nevada, as a donor and a member of the Board, when I moved to Las Vegas with my family nearly 30 years ago. Having experienced the unprecedented growth and its impact on our social infrastructure in Southern Nevada, I cannot imagine how we, as a community, would have coped without United Way and the supporters who made it possible. United Way deserves both our thanks and our on-going support.”
Donald D. Snyder Presidential Advisor | University of Nevada, Las Vegas
“I like to paint, and coloring and playing, and washing hands and toys,” says four-year old Nahliyah with a soft voice and a winning smile. Even as she speaks, she doesn’t stop playing with toys in her classroom.
For children like Nahliyah, it’s about having fun. For United Way, it’s about creating possibilities for many of our community’s youngest people to attend prekindergarten.
Nahliyah’s mother, Briana Williams, explains that prekindergarten would not have been a possibility for her daughter without United Way’s support. Williams went through a dark phase of “losing everything. My job. My apartment. It was very hard. Very rough…. I had to stop her (Nahliyah) from going to school because I couldn’t manage all of it at once.” She is now employed and Nahliyah is learning her numbers and alphabet in a high quality early education center. Williams can’t help shedding tears as she tells her story, but she also knows that life is improving for her daughter. She says that prekindergarten for Nahliyah was “everything I need. It was a blessing.”

WHEN A DIVERSE GROUP OF CARING, COMMITTED WOMEN GET TOGETHER TO CREATE CHANGE, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.
12 | United Way of Southern Nevada HEROES
United Way of Southern Nevada’s Women’s Leadership Council’s (WLC) 10th Annual “Women’s Fall Suit Drive” on Friday, November 3, 2017 was a complete success with an incredible 10,446 profes-sional items collected and 1,694 outfits created in the NV Energy parking lot.
WLC collected new and gently-used, clean professional attire including suits, dresses, pants and tops on hangers and jewelry, shoes, belts, scarves and handbags to assist women in need. The drive helps women prepare for career opportunities and gain confidence to succeed during an interview and in the workplace.
“Through the Suit Drive we make a direct impact on women’s lives by giving them the tools to build confidence as they walk through the door of an interview and take back control of their lives,” said Lawrel Larsen, Senior Director, Major Gifts.
Donations help women through agencies with back to work programs including Catholic Charities, Goodwill Career Connections, S.A.F.E. House, SafeNest, The Shade Tree, Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority ROSS Program, Women’s Development Center, and the Work Opportunities Readiness Center of HELP of Southern Nevada.

“You’re not too young to save for the future.” That’s the lesson Owen is learning at the Piggy Bank, an innovative program teaching children to save, introduced by United Way’s Young Philanthropists Society.
During the week, Owen learns financial lessons like needs versus wants, using credit, and more, and every Friday, he deposits money into his own savings account. Owen, a fifth grader who has been saving since the first grade, has already saved $1,880.25.
If you ask him, he’s saving for a few different things, like college and helping his family. “I want to be an FBI agent, so when I go to UNLV I want to study criminal justice,” he says. His Piggy Bank savings are helping him get there. Owen has a message for everyone who helped make the Piggy Bank possible: “Thank you for helping me learn how to save!”

LEADERSHIP SOCIETY
Over 400 community members gathered during the United Way Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) 10th Annual Luncheon Fashion Show at Bellagio Las Vegas on March 2, 2018. As both a celebration of WLC’s ten years of impact and a way to ignite future change, the event recognized our community’s dedicated female leaders and raised awareness for today’s most pressing needs.
“Together as Women United, we are leading the charge and inspiring the change. We are strongest when we are fighting together,” said WLC Luncheon Chair, Michelle St. Angelo.

For students like Eduardo “Eddie” Mijarez, attending college was never a priority.
“In middle school, I was a pretty troublesome kid,” he says. “I almost got expelled a few times.”
When he reached high school, that all changed. Eddie is a student at Mojave High School, which is part of a United Way partnership program to increase college access in Southern Nevada.
Through its Community-based Agenda, United Way works with local high schools and partner organizations to help students graduate and obtain a post-secondary education. United Way explores the connection between high school and college and identifies solutions to help students achieve success.
“Once I got here, it was more ‘I have to get focused, I have to do what I have to do to succeed in life,’” says Eddie. He is working hard to graduate and hopes to attend UNLV after high school.

“I was drawn to Women’s Leadership Council by the many opportunities to affect positive change in our community. Basic literacy skills are an essential building block to a successful future. United Way of Southern Nevada United Way launched Community Connect, a new online information hub that brings together community stories, data, programs, and other resources to help determine our community’s biggest issues and focus advocacy efforts effectively. The first digital tool of its kind, Community Connect is a free, publicly available resource that allows users to access up-to-date community indicators, compare local information by zip code and quickly create reports and visuals that can be shared.
“This important community tool helps us to better understand Southern Nevada’s toughest problems so we can provide resources where they are needed most,” said Elaina Mulé, United Way Vice President, Collective Impact and Social Innovation.
Community Connect provides a foundation for community members to support and create positive social change in their community. This easy-to-use online tool features information aggregated from more than 30 local and national sources, all in one place. The hub’s Community Stories section connects visitors to real stories from people who’ve received help and organizations who are giving help, and gives them the chance to add their own voice.

United Way of Southern Nevada unites the entire state of Nevada to support local nonprofits and schools through Nevada’s Big Give. “Nevada’s Big Give rallies the community together in a unique way that only a state-wide effort like this can generate,” said Scott Emerson, President and CEO, United Way of Southern Nevada. “It’s about collaboration – uniting together as a state to show how generous we are, and give where we live to support our local nonprofits that make a difference in each of our lives.” In its seven years, Nevada’s Big Give has raised over $4 million for nearly 500 Nevada charities from over 15,000 unique donors.

United Way of Southern Nevada 2017 HEROES | 39
On September 29, 2017, United Way of Southern Nevada rallied a record 1,600 volunteers from our community to participate in the annual Day of Caring, displaying kindness by donating their time and energy at more than 60 charities and schools.
During this special day, individuals from throughout our valley participated in an amazing 160 service projects. Projects include a variety of activities including painting school playgrounds and classrooms, graffiti removal, landscaping, planting gardens, building benches, reading to students, assembling food backpacks and park clean up.
To celebrate United Way’s 60th anniversary in Southern Nevada, $60,000 was split among participating nonprofits and schools to boost the volunteer efforts.
