It was received by iGA Chief Executive Mohammed Ali Al Qaed who attributed the BeAware Bahrain app’s success to the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, who leads the National Taskforce for Combating the Coronavirus.

He also praised the support and cohesion maintained by all public and private sector stake-holders, who helped the King-dom implement the policies necessary to make the BeAware Bahrain project a success.

Al Qaed added that the app is an important step in Bahrain’s digital transformation journey, which is ongoing in the face of the challenges imposed by the pandemic.

Al Qaed expressed his appre-ciation to Minister Khalaf and summit organising committee on the awarding.

The event, now in its fifth year, started yesterday under the pa-tronage of His Excellency the Minister of Works, Municipali-

ties Affairs and Urban Planning, Eng. Essam bin Abdullah Khalaf.

Four Bahraini doctors complete medical specialisation programmeTDT | Manama

French Ambassador to Bah-rain Jerome Cauchard has

honoured four Bahraini doctors for successfully participating in the Franco-Bahraini medi-cal specialisation programme with French language B2 level diplomas.

The programme is within an intergovernmental agreement signed in 2019 during the visit of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to France. The French Embassy in Manama is following up on its implemen-tation.

Bahrain-France cooperation is a major basis for relations between the two countries, the French embassy said in a state-ment.

“At a time when the world is going through an unprece-dented health crisis, medical cooperation needs to exist and develop between nations more than ever. This cooperation in

the field of Health, France and Bahrain has made it concrete through this magnificent pro-gramme.”

All the students in the class, like their predecessors last year, passed the language tests with high scores. They will take off for France in November to start their new adventure.

The Bahraini doctors, Dr. Rashed Noaman Al Hasan, Dr Jalal Toorani, Dr Alanood Al Meraisel and Dr Shaikha Ala-sam, will learn and practice

their medical specialisation for four to six years before return-ing in the Kingdom.

Ambassador Cauchard con-gratulated the Bahraini doc-tors at a ceremony attended by their hospital director as well as members of their family, and eminent personalities from the Ministry of Health, at the Resi-dence of France.

The ambassador hailed their performance and presented to them their language diplomas, wishing them further success.

TDT | Manama

It h m a a r B a n k , a B a h -rain-based Islamic retail

bank, distributed the third Thimaar quarterly prizes for the year and presented two Bahrainis, Mahmood Abdu-laziz and Mohamed Merghani Elmahi, US$100,000 each.

The draw was held remotely at the Bank’s headquarters in Seef Tower and supervised by the Ministry of Industry, Com-merce and Tourism (MOICT), as well as external auditors BDO Bahrain and the Bank’s own internal auditors.

“Thimaar savings account incentivises saving and invest-ing for the future and we are truly honoured to be part of

this journey with our custom-ers,” said Ithmaar Bank Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Abdul Hakeem Al Mutawa.

“The Thimaar scheme, of-fers the highest chances of winning of any comparable product in Bahrain, which is an extremely attractive pros-pect for savers,” he said.

“In line with the Bank’s cus-tomer-centric commitment to delivering a superior banking service, we are continuously improving our Thimaar sav-ings account,” said Al Mutawa.

“We noticed an obvious cus-tomer demand for increased chances to win large cash prizes for prize-based saving accounts, and we restructured Thimaar accordingly,” he said.

Facebook will try to ‘nudge’ teens away from harmful content Reuters | Washington

A Facebook Inc executive said Sunday that the com-

pany would introduce new measures on its apps to prompt teens away from harmful con-tent, as U.S lawmakers scruti-nize how Facebook and sub-sidiaries like Instagram affect young people’s mental health.

Nick Clegg, Facebook’s vice president of global affairs, also expressed openness to the idea of letting regulators

have access to Facebook algo-rithms that are used to ampli-fy content. But Clegg said he could not answer the question whether its algorithms ampli-fied the voices of people who had attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

The algorithms “should be held to account, if necessary, by regulation so that people can match what our systems say they’re supposed to do from what actually happens,” Clegg said.

KPMG hosts a seminar on Bahrain’s VAT increase

TDT | Manama

Audit, Tax and Advisory firm, KPMG in Bahrain, recent-

ly organized an online semi-nar yesterday under the theme “Bahrain VAT rate change” to discuss the anticipated VAT in-crease from 5% to 10%. The rate change is expected to take place starting from January 2022.

In September 2021, the Coun-cil of Ministers in Bahrain ap-proved an increase in the stand-ard rate of VAT from 5% to 10% with effect from 1 January 2022. This comes as part of fiscal re-form efforts to re-stabilize the local economy which was im-pacted by Covid-19.

The event was attended by 270 tax and finance profes-sionals in the local business community, who obtained valuable insights from KPMG in Bahrain’s Tax profession-als on the implications of this change on their operations. Partner and Head of Tax and Corporate Services at KPMG in Bahrain, Mubeen Khadir, the keynote speaker, was joined by Omar Hisham, Tax and Corpo-rate Services Senior Manager, Shashank Chandak and Dao-Han Hung, Tax and Corporate Services Managers at KPMG in Bahrain.

The webinar focused on what companies need to do to get

ready for the VAT rate change and ensure their teams’ readi-ness to deal their ongoing com-pliance obligations at the new rate.

Mubeen Khadir said, “Hav-ing worked with many Saudi businesses last year preparing them for the VAT rate increase, we strongly recommend Bah-rain businesses start preparing today. Businesses should review their existing contracts to assess the impact of the transition-al rules and plan for changes to documentation templates, such as invoices, credit and debit notes. They also need to perform a gap assessment of the existing IT and accounting sys-

tems to examine their readiness for VAT rate change from the cut-off date. Also, they need to consider any immediate change to marketing/pricing strategies and communications with sup-pliers, customers.”

Omar Hisham said, “Busi-nesses may have taken VAT costs less seriously as errors at 5% or the inability to claim input VAT may have not had a material impact on their finances. How-ever, with the rate set to double, VAT should become a material consideration for most busi-nesses - with VAT at 10%, errors and the inability to claim input VAT is likely to have a significant impact on businesses.”

Lulu drives ‘Think Pink’ support with biker paradeTDT | Manama

With October being global ‘Think Pink’ month to

raise awareness of and fund-ing for breast cancer screening, Lulu Hypermarket helped to spread the message with a roar of support – over 350 bikers rode into Dana Mall’s drive-way facing the highway on im-pressive motorcycles and nifty scooters with pink ribbons to signal their championing the cause.

The bikers represented all communities and included several prominent Bahrainis including Think Pink Vice Chairperson Tahera Al Alawi and lead biker Roy Ribeiro. At Dana Mall, they were greeted by Lulu Group Director Juzer Rupawala and Bahrain’s “Think Pink” founder Dr. Julie Sprakel.

The initiative was also sup-

ported by the Rotoract Club of Bahrain, whose members, led by President 2021, Tanima Chakra-vorty, were part of the group.

The bikers were then led by Rupawala to the specially po-sitioned “Tree of Hope” in the centre of the Dana Mall ground floor area to tie a symbolic pink ribbon as a sign of their care and commitment to the cause.

“Lulu Hypermarket has al-ways supported awareness rais-ing for breast cancer which is a health crisis that hundreds of women face,” said Rupawala, “Time and again, we have taken the message that regular testing can help detect the condition early on and prevent fatalities. This year, we have teamed with the incredibly effective “Think

Pink” NGO and Bahrain’s biker community to take the message on the road. We welcome all members of the public to visit Dana Mall and tie a pink ribbon to our ‘Tree of Hope’ as a sign of their support and also perhaps in memory of a loved one who is a cancer survivor or fought the disease.”

Pope meets Colombian nun released by Mali jihadistsAFP | Vatican City

Pope Francis yesterday met with Gloria Cecilia Narvaez,

a Franciscan nun from Colom-bia, a day after she was freed by jihadists in Mali after more than four years of captivity, a Vatican spokesman said.

Sister Gloria was taken hos-tage on February 7, 2017 in southern Mali near the border with Burkina Faso where she had been working as a mission-ary.

“This morning, before the celebration of the holy mass to open the bishops’ synod, the pope greeted the recently freed Colombian sister Gloria Cecilia Narvaez,” Matteo Bruni said in a statement.

Mali’s presidency had an-nounced Sister Gloria’s release on Saturday, with a statement on the presidential Twitter account paying tribute to her “courage and bravery” along with photos of the nun taken after her release.

“I thank the Malian authori-ties, the president, all the Ma-lian authorities, for all the ef-forts you’ve made to liberate me, may God bless you, may God bless Mali,” Sister Gloria

said in images broadcast on state television showing her with Mali’s interim president Colonel Assimi Goita and the

archbishop of Bamako Jean Zerbo.

“I am very happy, I stayed healthy for five years, thank God,” the nun said, smiling and wearing a yellow robe.

Her liberation had been the fruit of “four years and eight months of the combined effort of several intelligence services”, the presidency said.

In the official statement, Goi-ta assured that “efforts are un-der way” to secure the release of all those still being held in Mali.

Archbishop Zerbo said Sister Gloria was “doing well”.

Merkel vows German commitment to Israel in farewell visitReuters | Jerusalem

Outgoing German Chancel-lor Angela Merkel pledged

yesterday that her country would preserve its post-Hol-ocaust commitment to Israel, which hailed her as a “mor-al compass” for Europeans at times divided over its Middle East conflicts.

Merkel, making her eighth and final visit to Israel as she concludes her 16-year term, met Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and was scheduled to tour the Yad Vashem memorial to the six million Jews killed by the Nazis during World World Two.

Germany has been a leading postwar European ally of Israel and Merkel has sought to culti-vate security and economic ties, though she has differed with Israel on policies concerning the Palestinians and Iran.

“I want to use this opportu-nity to emphasise that the topic of Israel’s security will always be of central importance and a central topic of every German

government,” she told Bennett at a private meeting, accord-ing to a transcript issued by his office.

Attending a later session of Bennett’s cabinet, Merkel added: “It is a gift of history, to which Israel contributed much, that Germany can sit here at a table with you today since the history of the Shoah (Holocaust) is a singular event for which we continue to bear responsibility in every phase of history, including in the future.”

Sixteen killed in Russian parachutists’ plane crashSix people in ‘very serious condition’ after being rescued from wreckage of aircraft

• L-410 Turbolet crashed in central Russia’s Tatarstan region

AFP | Moscow

Sixteen people were killed when a plane carrying par-achutists crashed in central

Russia yesterday, the emergencies ministry said.

The L-410 plane carrying 22 people crashed around 9:23 am (0623 GMT) near the town of Menzelinsk in the republic of Ta-tarstan, the ministry said on its Telegram channel.

“Six people were rescued, 16 were taken out without signs of life,” the ministry said.

The ministry had earlier said 15 people died and that the aircraft was carrying 23 people.

While the Menzelinsk club or-ganises skydiving experiences for amateurs it has also hosted cham-pionships and training sessions for cosmonauts.

Images published by the minis-try showed the aircraft broken in half with a severely dented nose.

The six survivors were taken to hospital, the local health ministry told the Interfax news agency.

Tatarstan head Rustam Min-nikhanov, who travelled to the scene, said pilots had reported an engine failure and requested an emergency landing shortly after taking off.

He said the plane tried to avoid a nearby residential area as it ap-proached for landing but “the al-

titude didn’t allow it”.The plane hit a parked van with

its wing and the aircraft turned over.

All the survivors were sitting in the back of the plane, club in-structor Oleg Shiporov told TASS news agency.

Russian investigators have launched a criminal probe over the violation of safety rules.

Monday has been declared a day of mourning in Tatarstan.

‘Cosmonauts train here’

According to Interfax, the plane belonged to the Voluntary Society for Assistance to the Army, Avia-tion and Navy of Russia, which describes itself as a sports and defence organisation.

The organisation was creat-ed in the 1920s and Soviet cos-monaut Yuri Gagarin, the first man to travel to space in 1961, has trained on its airfields.

The head of the Menzelinsk parachuting club said that it was not to blame for the accident.

“We are the best, we are among the top five clubs,” Ravil Nurme-khametov told TASS news agency, adding that the club had hosted European and World champion-ships.

“Cosmonauts train here,” he said.

TASS cited a source as saying that the state Cosmonauts Train-ing Centre has suspended its work with the club pending the inves-tigation.

In 2018, two amateur skydivers died while completing a group free-fall jump at the Menzelinsk club after their parachutes got tangled.

The Czech-built L-410 light aircraft was one of the two planes used by the club, according to its website.

Two L-410 planes suffered fatal accidents in Russia earlier this year, leaving a total of eight peo-ple dead.

Russia was notorious for plane accidents but has improved air traffic safety in recent years with major airlines switching from So-viet aircraft to modern jets.

But poor maintenance and lax safety standards still lead to fre-quent accidents in far-flung re-gions involving light aircraft, with occasional large-scale tragedies.

Five dead in Yemen blast targeting Aden governor: security sourcesAFP | Aden

Five people have been killed in a car-bomb attack target-

ing the governor of Aden, the seat of Yemen’s internationally recognised government, securi-ty sources said yesterday.

Aden, in southern Yemen, is home to a separatist movement that last year precariously inte-grated into the central govern-ment, and both have long been aligned against Huthi rebels in a grinding civil war.

Ad e n g ove r n o r A h m e d Lamlas and Salem al-Socotri, a government minister, both survived the blast which went off as their convoy passed, the sources said.

“A car bomb... on Al-Mualla Street exploded while the con-voy of officials... was passing,” a Yemeni security source told AFP, adding that the victims were in the convoy.

Five members of the entou-rage were killed and 11 others were wounded in the attack.

The central government relo-cated to Aden from the capital Sanaa in 2014, forced out by the Iran-backed Huthis, who are fighting Saudi-backed Yemeni government loyalists. The Sau-di-led military coalition inter-vened in Yemen’s war in 2015.

Yemeni Prime Minister Maeen Abdulmalek Saeed has called for an investigation into yesterday’s “terrorist and cow-ardly” attack, the official Saba news agency reported.

It added that the premier spoke with Lamlas and Socotri, to whom “no harm” was caused.

Beyond the conflict with the Huthis, Southern Yemen has separately been beset by peri-odic tensions between the cen-tral government and southern separatists in recent years, in-cluding sporadic armed clashes.

In December 2020, officials from the Southern Transitional

Council (STC) were integrated into the cabinet in an uneasy power-sharing agreement.

Lamlas and Socotri are both STC personnel.

No one has yet claimed re-sponsibility for yesterday’s blast, which is the deadliest since December 2020 when an attack ripped through Aden’s airport targeting cabinet mem-bers.

At least 26 people, includ-ing three members of the In-ternational Committee of the Red Cross, were killed and scores were wounded when explosions rocked the airport as ministers disembarked from an aircraft.

All cabinet members were re-ported to be unharmed, in what some ministers charged was an attack by the Huthis.

The STC has sought to restore the independence of South Yemen, a then country which was integrated into the north in 1990.

The central government and the separatists are, despite their own differences, aligned against the Huthis.

The Huthis have lately in-tensified a campaign to take Marib city, capital of an oil-rich province of the same name and government loyalists’ final toe-hold in northern Yemen.

Some fear that the Huthis will then turn their attention to expanding in southern Yemen.

STC spokesman Ali al-Kathiri in a statement yesterday called the Huthis’ offensive in Marib a “dangerous” scheme that could be a springboard to targeting the south.

Yemen is also home to Al-Qa-eda in the Arabian Peninsula, which launches periodic at-tacks against both fighters aligned with the country’s au-thorities and the insurgents.

Tens of thousands of peo-ple, mostly civilians, have been killed and millions displaced in Yemen’s conflict, dubbed the world’s worst humanitarian disaster by the United Nations.

Gunmen kill at least 20 in attack in northwest Nigeria

Reuters | Bauchi

At least 20 people were killed in Nigeria’s Sokoto

state when gunmen attacked a market and torched cars, as armed gangs continue to wreak havoc in the northwest part of the country, a state of-ficial and local member of par-liament said on Saturday.

Northwestern Nigeria has since last December wit-nessed a wave of kidnappings of school children and villag-ers for ransoms by bandits, disrupting everyday life for millions of citizens.

Idriss Gobir, special advi-sor to the Sokoto police af-fairs minister, said the armed bandits rode on motorcycles and shot sporadically, killing several people.

“The bandits in large num-bers killed at least 20 people that we have seen and counted and set nine vehicles on fire,” he told Reuters by telephone.

Hussain Boza, a local mem-ber of parliament in Sokoto, blamed the attack on a lack of adequate security in the state.

A Sokoto police spokesper-son confirmed the attack but could not immediately say

how many people had been killed.

Parts of Sokoto, like other neighbouring states in the northwestern part of the coun-try, are under a telecommuni-cations blockade as part of a security operation to disrupt the operations of the armed gangs.

On Thursday, security agents rescued 187 people who had been abducted by armed gangs in Zamfara state.

Iraqis show little enthusiasm for parliamentary electionReuters | Baghdad

Iraq’s parliamentary election on Sunday drew one of the small-

est turnouts for years, electoral officials indicated, with the low participation suggesting dwin-dling trust in political leaders and the democratic system brought in by the 2003 US-led invasion.

The established, Shi’ite Is-lamist-dominated ruling elite whose most powerful parties have armed wings is expected to sweep the vote, with the movement led by populist Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, who opposes all foreign interference and whose main ri-vals are Iran-allied Shi’ite groups, seen emerging as parliament’s biggest faction.

Such a result would not dramat-ically alter the balance of power in Iraq or the wider Middle East, say Iraqi officials, foreign diplomats and analysts, but for Iraqis it could mean that a former insurgency leader and conservative Islamist could increase his sway over the government.

Two electoral commission of-ficials told Reuters that nation-wide turnout of eligible voters was 19% by midday. Total turnout was 44.5% in the last election in 2018. Polling stations closed at 6

p.m. (1500 GMT)Initial results are expected on

Monday but final turnout figures could be announced on Sunday night.

However, Iraqi elections are often followed by protracted talks over a president, a prime minister and a cabinet.

It appeared to be the lowest turnout in any election since 2003, according to electoral commis-sion counts at polling stations that Reuters visited across the country.

In Baghdad’s Sadr City, a polling station set up in a girls’ school saw a slow but steady trickle of voters.

But poor maintenance and lax safety standards still lead to fre-quent accidents in far-flung re-gions involving light aircraft, with occasional large-scale tragedies.

u The Australian government is considering a range of measures that would make social media companies more responsible for defamatory material published on their platforms, Communications Minister Paul Fletcher said yesterday. Intensifying a debate over the country’s libel and defamation laws, Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Thursday called social media “a coward’s palace”, saying platforms should be treated as publishers when defamatory comments by unidentified people are posted.

u A performer at Russia’s legendary Bolshoi Theatre was killed in an accident on stage

during an opera, the Moscow company said. The theatre said the incident took place during a set change in Sadko, a 19th century opera by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. “The performance was immediately stopped and the audience was asked to leave,” the theatre’s press service told the Interfax news agency.

u Italian police said they had arrested 12 people including the leaders of the extreme right-wing party Forza Nuova, after clashes in Rome a day earlier over a government drive to make the COVID-19 “Green Pass” mandatory for all workers. Thousands of people took to the streets of the Italian capital on Saturday to oppose the move. Some tried to break past police in riot gear guarding access to Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s office, while a separate group broke into the headquarters of Italy’s main CGIL trade union and turned its offices upside down.

Iraqis show little enthusiasm for parliamentary electionReuters | Baghdad

Iraq’s parliamentary election on Sunday drew one of the small-

Kristen Stewart reveals why she felt ‘disloyal’ playing Princess DianaIANS | London

Actress Kristen Stewart said that she felt “dis-loyal” playing Princess

Diana in ‘Spencer’ because she doesn’t have children of her own so didn’t think she was “a u t h e n t i c ” enough in the role.

T h e

31-year-old actress plays the late royal in ‘Spencer’, which focuses on three days at San-dringham the Christmas before the Princess split from Prince Charles.

She said: “She’s like this feral animal you wouldn’t dare ac-costa (I regretted that) I’m not a mum yet. I need that to feel authentic. It’s the one part of playing her that I felt disloyal about.”

The movie has had a mixed reaction from critics and Stew-

art always knew it would be a divisive subject but

she ultimately felt it was worth the risk, reports femalefirst.

co.uk.She told the Daily Mail

newspaper columnist Baz Bamigboye: “I definitely knew that the chances of ‘mucking this up’, as a Brit might say, were

f a r

greater than doing a ‘good job’.“But I thought it was worth

it. I’ve been working as an actor for a long time and it’s really rare to find things that make you feel this way.”

She had been prepared for the “daunting and exception-ally harrowing experience” of recreating one of the lowest periods in the life of Diana, who died in a car crash in 1997, but she wasn’t ready for how much “joy” she would feel.

She said: “Diana just really did have this overriding, dis-arming, beautiful energy. [The decisions she was making were] earth-shattering.

“(But) inhabiting her made me feel taller, and made me feel I could dance. I felt her power in a f****** beautiful way.”

Stewart spent six months researching the role and a lot of time focusing on Diana’s “buoyant” accent.

She said: “When I’m talk-ing, I barely open my mouth, and everything comes to

an end fairly abruptly.”But on occasion, if she

felt “self-protective or tight or emotional” on set, Stewart lapsed back into her natural accent and would

end up walking around shouting “Argh! Argh!” in

order to get her voice back on track, much to the shock of the crew and her castmates.

Madonna regrets turning down a role in ‘The Matrix’ANI | Washington

Madonna’s career is un-matched by many, but

there’s one job she wishes she never turned down.

In an interview with Jimmy Fallon

on Thursday’s e p i s o d e o f ‘The Tonight S h ow ’ , t h e 63-year-old pop star re-vealed that

she rejected a role in ‘The

Matrix’, r e -

ported People magazine.“Can you believe that?” she

told Fallon.“That’s like one of the best

movies ever made. A teeny-tiny part of me regrets just that one moment in my life,” Madonna added.

Released in 1999, ‘The Ma-trix’ follows a hacker named Neo (Keanu Reeves), who gets stuck inside a simulated re-ality. The sci-fi film grossed USD 171.5 million domestically and USD 466.3 million globally, according to Box Office Mojo, and earned dozens of awards.

Madonna confirmed that she also missed out on playing Cat-woman in ‘Batman Returns’ and a leading role in ‘Show-girls’, though she only regrets the former.

“I saw them both and I regret that I turned down Catwom-an, that was pretty fierce,” the Grammy-winner confessed. “Showgirls? No.”

Currently, Madonna is back in the director’s chair for a movie about her life. The artist has directed two other films: ‘Filth and Wisdom’ (2008) and ‘W.E’. (2011).

Studios had previously at-tempted to produce movies about Madonna’s life, but none of them met her standards. One film, she told Fallon, was “the most hideous, superficial piece

of crap I’ve ever read.”“I’m thinking, ‘Why would

these people want to make a movie about my life?’ There’s nothing true in the script,” she explained, adding that a direc-tor behind one of the proposed films “had no appreciation for women.”

In September 2020, Madon-na announced she would pro-duce her own movie about her life. “I said, ‘There is nobody on this planet that can write or direct [or] make a movie about me better than me.’ It’s just the truth,” the pop star told Fallon on Thursday.

A name and release date have yet to be announced.

Mubarak takes podium place in Abu Dhabi Spartan raceTDT | Manama

Bahraini Nawa f Yo usi f Mubarak clinched a su-

perb third place in the 40 to 44 age-category at the Spartan Mixed Race, held at Al Ghaz-al Golf Club in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.

Mubarak, competing with Spartan Brothers team from Bahrain, completed the Sprint 5K in a time of 42 minutes 11 seconds to finish on the podium in his division.

He was an impressive 30th overall amongst the 140 partic-ipants from all over the world, both men and women, racing in

the Sprint age groups. There were over 1,000 com-

petitors in all in the event, which also featured action in the Sprint elite and Sprint open classes.

This was the first Spartan race held in the UAE since the implementation of COVID-19 restrictions last year.

Mubarak and his Spartan Brothers teammates are now set to compete in another Spar-tan event in the UAE on Novem-ber 5. It will be held at Al Ain Zoo, and it will feature Sprint 5K and Super 10K Spartan rac-es, as well as a Hurricane Heat 4HR endurance race.

BRAVE CF pioneer Gaziev Eager to restart his title run after being inspired by new champTDT | Manama

Russian mixed martial arts fans in the bustling city of

Rostov-on Don are in for a treat as Gadzhimusa “Deadshot” Ga-ziev will be donning the coun-try’s signature colors of white, blue and red on BRAVE Combat Federation’s upcoming event this November 6th.

The 29-year-old knockout artist from Makhachkala, Rus-sia is set to lock horns with Bel-gian standout Issa Isakov on the supporting card of BRAVE CF 55.

Gaziev has been part of the organization’s roster since its inaugural event in 2016, win-ning four of his last eight out-

ings—with all victories coming by way of stoppage.

Noticing similarities between his career and the journey of the new Lightweight Champion of the World Ahmed Amir, Ga-ziev is motivated and is looking forward to turning his BRAVE CF legacy around by using his

5 year experience at the pro-motion as a drive to restart his title run by securing his second victory in 2021.

Fresh from a third-round knockout triumph against Ger-aldo Neto at BRAVE CF 49: Super Fights, another victory could put him in line for a shot at El-dar Eldarov’s BRAVE CF Super Lightweight World Champi-onship.

However, it will not be a walk in the park as Isakov presents a stern test for the Russian hard-hitter. The Belgian—who holds a professional record 8-3, possesses an 88-percent finish-ing rate.

BRAVE CF releases full fight card for Russia return, headlined by mega Flyweight boutTDT | Manama

BRAVE Combat Federation has announced the full fight card

for BRAVE CF 55, in association with PRO FC. The already historic fight card will be hosted on No-vember 6th, in Rostov-On-Don, and is set to be headlined by a monumental Flyweight semifinal bout. MMA legend Ali Bagautinov takes on amateur double world champion and two-weight re-gional champion Jose Torres.

Bottas wins in Turkey, title advantage to VerstappenValtteri Bottas wins from pole as Lewis Hamilton struggles to fifth

• Max Verstappen takes six-point championship lead

AFP | Istanbul

Mercedes driver Valt-teri Bottas claimed his first chequered flag of

the season to win the Turkish Grand Prix yesterday as Max Verstappen reclaimed the lead in the title race.

The Red Bull driver finished second to take a six-point lead in the championship ahead of Bottas’ teammate Lewis Ham-ilton who finished fifth voicing frustration with team strategy.

Sergio Perez, in the other Red Bull, took third with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in fourth.

Although the rain eased by the start of the race, the wet conditions prevailed through-out, making the tactics around tyres and the timing of pit stops all the more important.

Bottas began from pole, avoid-ing a tangle between Pierre Gasly and Fernando Alonso on the opening lap, and led until pitting on the 38th lap of the 58-lap race.

That gave Leclerc the lead but as his tyres faded so did his pace and the Finn soon reclaimed the lead, going on to take his 11th Grand Prix ain and his first win since Russia over a year ago.

“It ’s been a while. Feels good,” said Bottas who is leav-ing Mercedes at the end of the season to join Alfa Romeo.

“From my side, probably one of the best races I’ve had ever.

“It is not easy to choose the strategy here with these conditions and when to stop and which tyre but I’m glad everything went smooth for once for me.

“When only one drying line, it doesn’t need much to go off. I definitely needed to focus all through the race. A difficult one, but feels like a well-earned vic-tory.”

Verstappen, who began the race two points behind Ham-ilton in the title race, made no attempt to challenge Bottas and focussed on a damage limitation exercise, content to ease home

second knowing that Hamilton was three places further back.

“It was not easy today,” said the Dutchman who took a slen-der six-point lead in the cham-pionship with six races remain-ing.

“The track was very greasy, we had to manage the tyres the whole race so couldn’t really push.

“Just seemed Valtteri had a bit more pace, could look after the tyres all race. Happy to finish second in these conditions, it’s easy to get it wrong so you drop back.”

Hamilton frustration Hamilton was quickest in

qualifying but had to start the race in 11th because of a grid penalty incurred for changing his engine.

The seven-time champion gained two places on the open-ing lap before picking his way up to fifth where he was held up by Perez.

As the other cars came in to change their tyres Hamilton stayed out, moving up to third and looking good for the po-dium.

Hamilton declined the initial call to come in for fresh tyres but finally acceded to the Mercedes team instructions, boxing eight laps from the end.

It cost Hamilton two places as Perez and Leclerc flew on ahead and the Englishman did not hide his frustration over the radio.

“We shouldn’t have come in. Massive graining man. I told you,” an angry Hamilton said to his team as he struggled to hold off Pierre Gasly in the McLaren.

A disgruntled Hamilton later pointed out Alpine’s Esteban Ocon made it round with one set of tyres, intimating that he could have stayed out.
