possibilities at the ILL”

ESRF - Dr. B. Detlefs “Thin films and heterostructures studies at ID32, ESRF” IMDEA Nano - Prof. J. Camarero “Current scientific topics at IMDEA-Nano”

The presentations were followed by questions and large discussions.

The talks highlighted that different partners are already collaborating in the research activities which are pertinent to the ONDA project. In particular, the Co/fluorides/Si layers grown and studied at the IOFFE are seen to present interesting magnetic properties that will be further inspected through the collaboration with IMDEA-Nano and ICN, where suitable magnetic probes are available, and through joint experiments with the UNIMORE team, through the participation of measurement runs in Italy and at international synchrotron radiation facilities, including ESRF. The study of magnetised systems also involves the participation of PNPI and ILL teams, which are already collaborating with IOFFE for the study of the magnetic structure and order of antiferromagnetic difluorides. These activities will be the basis of the nearest future joint experiments and secondments. 2nd July, Day 2 of the kick off meeting The meeting started at 10.00 am and terminated at 15.00 pm with a lunch break of 1 hour. The second day has started with the visit of the laboratories at the IOFFE

The meeting continued discussing scientific and administrative issues relevant to the implementation of the ONDA project. Nicola Dorigo Salamon from UNIMORE joined the meeting via teleconference, presenting and explaining to the audience all administrative and financial issues related to the IRSES project and exchange scheme. Regarding ONDA management, according to the Consortium/Partnership Agreement the composition of the Project Steering Committee, Management Team, and the Work Package Leaders have been identified. The Project Steering Committee (PSC) is formed by representatives form all the institutions participating to ONDA. In particular:

• UNIMORE: Luca Pasquali (Co-ordinator) • ILL: Martin Boehm • ESRF: Jörg Zegenhagen • IMDEA-Nano: Julio Camarero • ICN: Josep Nogues • PNPI: Igor Golosovsky • IOFFE: Nikolai Sokolov

The Management team (MT) comprises: Luca Pasquali (Co-ordinator - UNIMORE), Nikolai Sokolov (Technical manager - IOFFE), Nicola Dorigo Salamon (Project manager - UNIMORE). The following Work Package Leaders (WPL) have been also appointed:

• WP1 (Joint experimental research): Prof. Julio Camarero (IMDEA-Nano) • WP2 (Training through research): Dr. Sergey Suturin (IOFFE) • WP3 (Coordination of research activity and information exchange): Dr. Blanka

The PSC, MT and WPL will remain in close contact along the duration of the project. They will meet at least once every year, either physically or virtually (via teleconference), with modalities that will be discussed each time depending on the partners’ activities. Scientific plans for the ONDA project The scientific activity of the different partners illustrated during day 1 of the kick-off is completely consistent with the proposed activity of the ONDA project. The partners agree to continue on the planned track, with the participation of joint experimental teams to the experiments. UNIMORE, IOFFE, and IMDEA-Nano teams will participate to joint experiments for the fabrication of metal/dielectric/silicon systems to be characterised through different spectroscopic tools, including synchrotron radiation. Structural characterisation of the systems will be particularly addressed by mixed ESRF-IOFFE teams. PNPI, ILL, IOFFE, ICN UNIMORE and IMDEA-Nano will also participate in joint activity related to magnetic characterisation of ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic nanostructured systems based on antiferromagnetic fluorides. The partners agree that the work-plan to be undertaken for future activities closely depends on the experimental results and discoveries in the planned experiments in the next six months. Therefore it is not possible to identify at the moment a precise activity plan covering the whole duration of the project. On the other hand, most of the partners are already collaborating since 10 years on common activities. We believe that the long standing tradition and in cooperating together and exchanging researchers between teams and testified by many joint publications along the years will be the best guarantee for the success of the project. In summary, several cooperation actions to be undertaken in the next future were outlined.

1. IOFFE is preparing a series of samples with different growth modes with the participation of two members from the UNIMORE team. These samples will be used for magnetic characterisation at IMDEA-Nano

2. Members of the IOFFE will come to Italy at UNIMORE for electronic properties characterization during next September, with the participation of ICN. Samples will be both fabricated in situ, due to expertises of IOFFE and UNIMORE members, and will be fabricated ex situ at IOFFE and taken to Italy.

3. Members of IOFFE and UNIMORE teams will spend a period of 1-2 months in Japan during next autumn to particpate to joint XMCD and X-ray scattering experiments at the Photon Factory synchrotron radiation facility. This can be considered a by-product of the ONDA project.

4. It is agreed that a member of IOFFE team will stay a month in IMDEA-Nano and ICN during coming autumn for exchange by accumulated experience in low-temperature magneto-optical measurements and carrying out joint experiments on ferromagnet-antiferromagnet heterostructures.

5. ILL and IOFFE will submit a joint proposal on studies of magnetic properties of antiferromagnetic fluoride layers using neutron elastic and inelastic scattering.

6. It was also agreed that testing neutron reflectivity measurements of ferromagnet-antiferromagnet heterostructures grown at IOFFE will be carried out at ILL.

7. In result of discussions it was agreed that IOFFE and ESRF will continue STM and SXRD studies of CaF2/Si(001) interface using accumulated by IOFFE experience and unique facilities existing at ID32 beam line of ESRF.

Deliverables will be scientific publications, presentations at conferences and workshops and periodic newsletter/report that will be prepared and updated every six months. It was agreed that each team will provide suitable publicity to the result of the research, acknowledging the ONDA project and FP7 IRSES grant whenever appropriate (publications, conference communications, posters, books,…) Secondment plans for the ONDA project It has been noted that due to the many superimposed activities taking place at each partners’ institution, including involvement in other projects and teaching activities, it is not possible to plan a realistic scheme of secondment on a timescale longer than six months. In addition to this, one should consider that the staff personnel of each group is in permanent evolution due to the continuous arrival and outgoing of non-permanent staff members and early stage researchers. Moreover, most experimental joint efforts are based on the access to synchrotron radiation and neutron scattering facilities, which organise their activities on a six-month schedule. Consequently, it has been agreed that a secondment plan should be prepared and rearranged every six months, in reasonable consistency with and taking into account the duration of the whole project. In this respect it has been proposed that each partner should send to the Coordinator the expected list and duration of the secondments its institution is involved within 4 weeks, so that to prepare a revised Gantt Chart to be agreed with to the Project Officer. At the end of each six month period the Coordinator together with the PSC will control on the actual secondments occurred in the period and will arrange for the secondments to be undertaken in the next six months. Project Web Site A project web site is currently in preparation. As soon as possible it will be available to the community. The web site will illustrate the scope of the project, any relevant news related to events and seminars, the activity of the partners involved along the duration of the project and an updated plan of the secondments. Social event The meeting terminated with a social informal event: a barbecue dinner was prepared in the countryside outside the town, terminating at around 21.00.
