The Oculus is made up of the headset and the controllers. Before turning the device on, point out each part or button and get used to interacting with them. Adjust the straps on the headset for maximum comfort.

Next, ensure the headset and controllers are fully charged. The headset plugs directly into the wall - a charger is included in the box. The handsets use AA batteries which come included fully charged. If the headset is not charged, you will see an empty battery symbol in the headset when you put it on.

Switch the headset on by pressing the power button (4 on the headset diagram) for approximately 5 seconds.

Once the Guardian is set up, the Oculus Main Menu Room will load. Welcome to Virtual Reality!

When the headset turns on, the first thing you will see is a prompt to set up the Guardian.

The Guardian is a virtual barrier intended to keep you safe while wearing the headset and conducting your training. A 2m x 2m space clear of any obstructions is recommended to ensure your safety.

If any of the menus look blurry, ensure the Oculus lenses are vertically and horizontally aligned with your eyes. Adjust vertically by tilting the headset and adjusting the strap. Adjust horizontally by adjusting the lever under the left eye (5 on the headset diagram).

Main Menu RoomIn the Main Menu Room, you will find two menus. The big menu is the Oculus storefront menu. The small menu below the storefront is the navigation menu.

If you cannot see the navigation menu, press the Oculus button (3) on the right controller.

Scenario Controls

8

Oculus Button

One of the most important buttons on the VR controller is the Oculus button (3) on the right controller.

If you push and hold it down, you will recenter the VR Camera according to your position. This is very useful when your physical space is limited. It will also adjust the height of the VR camera to the current user.

If you short press the Oculus button, you open the navigation menu. From here, you can either close or resume the current VR application.

Teleporting

Moving around in SkillsVR Scenarios is done using teleport points.

To use a teleport point, highlight the point by looking or pointing at it, and an orange arrow will show.

Press the A button or the trigger (6) on the controller while the teleport point is highlighted to teleport to that location

Radio

If you hold down either the B or Y button on either controller, you can speak to the facilitator.

The Facilitator Application records anything that is said through the radio which can later be used for further assessment and/or training.

Grabbing / interacting with items

The grip button (5 on the inside of each controller) is very intuitive. Pushing it will close your virtual hand. This is used to interact with or grab objects in the scene.

Any object that highlights when you touch it in VR can be interacted with or grabbed when you press the grip button.

Below is a list of essential controls and actions you can take while in the SkillsVR scenarios.

Having Trouble?

I cannot see the VR player while using the facilitator app

● Check that both devices are connected to the Internet● Check that you are using the correct session codes ● If you’ve checked both of the above try restarting both the Facilitator app and the VR app. Launch

the facilitator 1st then the VR application

The VR player cannot progress from current location

● Check that both devices are connected to the Internet● Skip the current phase using Facilitator app● Restart the session● If the above did not fix the issue then try restarting both the Facilitator app and the VR app. Launch

the facilitator 1st then the VR application

VR Hands floating in the air or not moving

● Controller batteries are flat and need to be replaced

Session keeps disconnecting

● This issue is caused by unstable and/or slow internet. We recommend using a strong wifi connection of a min 2mb upload and 2mb download speed.

Cannot connect to wifi with VR headset

● It is possible that your organisation’s wifi has a firewall that is blocking the headset’s access. Please engage your IT department to resolve this or use a dedicated mobile hotspot

Session Codes are invalid

● Make sure the App is requesting Session code (digits), not Organisation Code. If you have created a session with the help of the Web Portal, make sure the session status is not Cancelled.

Still having trouble?

Health and Safety in VR

10

Our headsets are sanitised in accordance to the recommendations of the Ministry of Health.

Below, we’ve listed a few key health and safety tips that we highly recommend you follow when you run any event or session with a VR headset.

● Wash your hands and face

We all know how important it is to wash our hands. Since the headset is strapped to your face, it is very important to wash your face as well. Make sure you have a hand sanitising / washing station nearby and ensure users wash their hands and face before and after using the headset. You should also have disposable towels or tissues so people could dry their hands and faces.

● Antibacterial or Antiviral Wipes

We highly recommend having some form of disposable antibacterial or antiviral wipes to wipe the headset before and after use.

● Silicon Faceplate

You would have received a few silicon faceplates with your headset. We recommend that you replace these after every VR session. These are washable, so you can have a bowl of clean water and wash the faceplate after use. Please remember to change the water used to clean faceplates after each use.

● Dizziness and/or Nausea

Human brains are still adapting to the use of Virtual Reality so it is possible that you may experience dizziness or nausea when using the headset. If you do, we recommend that you discontinue use immediately.

● General safety tips

Virtual Reality is still a relatively new technology. Because of this, few people know how to safely use the VR headsets. We recommend you download the Health and Safety guide from the Oculus website at https://www.oculus.com/legal/health-and-safety-warnings/.

This is only general advice and not intended to replace advice from the Ministry of Health, COVID-19 website, WorkSafe, individual health professionals, and any details set out by your own site safety plans.
