KVH’s chief executive officer.
“By integrating Videotel content
into our IP-MobileCast platform,
we plan to revolutionize the way
training is delivered by allowing
any number of users to access
the training systems on a variety
of devices, including laptops and
tablets at the same time. Not only
will we offer the best content,
but we will be able to
update that content
on a monthly basis,
rather than sending out
annual DVDs as was
the practice in the past.

truly exciting opportunities to
bring a whole new generation
of computer-based e-Learning

part of the KVH family which
will provide unprecedented and
tremendously exciting dynamics
to propel the company forward
on both the technological and
delivery front, as well as to work
with our new highly-talented
colleagues in developing the next
generation of seafarer training.”

Congratulations to all candidates that passed the first ever Videotel Academy Portable Gas Detection Training Course. The on line
course, which ran intensively over five days in May, exclusively for Bernard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM), brought together candidates from South America, India and Europe. The course was led by the tutor, Chris Clucas, who is a BSM Fleet Director. He graduated as a BSc in Chemistry (1973) then joined the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) where he
worked on the original IGC Code and compiled the ICS Tanker Safety Guide (Liquefied Gas). He then took an MSc in Cryogenic Engineering (1979), worked on LNG plant design with British Gas before joining Kosan Tankers as Gas Superintendent (Copenhagen) moving on to their Isle of Man LPG operation. In 1990, Chris returned to shipping with Dorchester Maritime, responsible for cargo system design, newbuild, upgrades & operations for their owned & managed LPG/LEG/LNG fleets. He was appointed to his current position following the re-naming of the Schulte Group companies in 2008.
Training has been one of Chris’ specialities for many years and he has a long association with Videotel – stretching back to his days with ICS. There has also been a close co-operation between the BSM Group and Videotel, which lead to the work with Chris to produce two specialised films on Chemistry & Physics for the gas industry and another on using portable gas detectors on all types of ship.
The Videotel Academy Learning Management System (LMS) is the most recent breakthrough for the interactive training of sea staff in remote locations and enables live teaching to be delivered without the requirement to travel to each and every location. Using this technology, Chris devised a course combining library material, video resources and live virtual classroom sessions. The course assessment comprises interactive multiple-choice tests after each live tuition session followed by a written assignment where a case study must be analysed.
“The LMS system takes training to a different level – one where travel costs are minimised and it is not necessary to gather a minimum number of people in each location before a course is viable. Furthermore, the case study really provides a deep insight into the understanding gained by the candidates” says Chris “It gives us the

confidence to know that the candidate has not only absorbed what we have taught them, but we can also apply this to a realistic scenario. The candidate has the opportunity to demonstrate the depth of their understanding. I was delighted that so many of the candidates went far beyond the pass criteria and some by a significant margin.”
“This experience perfectly demonstrated what the Videotel Academy is all about” says Raal Harris Videotel’s Director of e-Learning and Digital Media “With such a diverse spread of international candidates, coordinating a bricks and mortar attendance course would be a logistical nightmare and arranging travel and hotels for everyone prohibitively expensive. Throw into the mix that an expert such as Chris has very limited availability and it can take months to be able to get the learning where it is needed. Using the Videotel academy platform we were able to bring the expertise directly to each candidate without anyone needing to leave the office.”
Chris is an experienced lecturer, but had no previous experience with virtual classroom technology. However, the LMS system proved very intuitive and with the support of the Videotel team he quickly got up to speed and made good use of the system. The course will run again later this year and will be open to all candidates.

Innovative Games Technology
Developed bridging the gap between knowledge
and practical application of processes and procedures, Ser ious Games creates a pressured situat ion where previous training and knowledge transfer can be put to the test, without endangering the lives of learners. Gaming, particularly for the newest generation of seafarers, is pervasive to all areas of life what with the prevalence
of smart phones, tablets and computers. Harnessing the skills required for video games and turning them into learning opportunities just makes sense. Enclosed – Virtual Training for Enclosed Spaces is a video game developed from the existing Entry into Enclosed Spaces developed with Mines Rescue that takes the learners into a realistic scenario, measures their proficiency in an authentic, potential ly l i fe-threatening situation and assesses their
knowledge base and reactions. Raal Harris, head of Videotel’s Multi-Media department, is excited about this emerging training method, describing Serious Games as innovate tools that motivate the learner and ensure their performance is measurable. His recent presentation of the concept, featuring a look at Enclosed – Virtual Training for Enclosed Spaces to the Nautical Institute at NW Kent College was very well received.

WORKING WITH MARITIME SECURITY GUARDS
Early last month representatives from all areas of the shipping community joined Videotel on board the HQS Wellington for the launch of the new WORKING WITH MARITIME SECURITY GUARDS programme.
Guests were welcomed on board by Videotel, SAMI and Steamship Mutual, sponsors of the event, followed by a full screening of the realistic, informative – and at times thought provoking - video. Then followed presentations from Stephen Bond (Videotel Chai rman) , Andy Winbow (Director, Mari t ime Safety Division IMO), Peter Cook (CEO,
SAMI) and Stephen Martin (COO, Steamship Mutual) Thereafter, guests were invited to continue the discussions during a drinks’ reception on the quarterdeck, w h e r e t h e y w e r e
given the opportunity to meet members of the Videotel team and Steamship Mutual involved in the production.Guests remarked on the realism of the documentary style video presentation and its relevance to an area of their business that external factors are now forcing many of them to confront.

For further information on these and many other
productions Visit us at: www.videotel.com
FIRE FIGHTING AT SEA (EDITION 4) – Shipboard fire is one of the greatest
dangers facing all seafarers. Basic and refresher training in how to prevent and
tackle fires on board is essential for all officers and crew and is a requirement
under STCW. Videotel’s flagship five-part series, ‘Fire Fighting at Sea’ has been
completely revised and updated to reflect current regulations and industry best
practice.
HEAVY LIFTS AND PROJECT CARGOES – Project cargoes present specific
and sometimes complex handling issues, particularly if ships’ personnel are
involved directly in the loading or discharge operation using the vessel’s cranes
and lifting gear. If a lifting operation were to fail, apart from the danger to life and
limb, there is the certainty of severe damage to the cargo, the cranes and the
vessel itself, resulting in large insurance claims and reputations ruined.
PORT STATE CONTROL – TIGHTENING THE NET (EDITION 3) – This
programme explains that the objective of Port State Control is to ensure that
all ships passing through the Port State’s waters are operated according to the
established international standards. The programme looks at what the ship can do
to help the inspector view the ship favourably and hears the opinion of Port State
inspectors on a wide range of topics. The Maritime Labour Convention 2006 must
also be complied with. The video concludes by noting that there are no secrets
to passing a Port inspection: it’s about keeping the ship up to standard, following
proper procedures and keeping good and accurate records.
VESSEL GENERAL PERMIT (EDITION 2) – Vessel General Permit, or VGP,
is a permit under which vessels are authorised to discharge effluent incidental to
normal operations within US waters. Failure to comply with VGP standards and
practices can lead to heavy fines and even imprisonment. It applies to almost
all commercial vessels in US waters. This video describes best management
practices for reducing effluent discharge and defines vessels inspection
schedules, equipment monitoring, recording and reporting requirements. It also
defines new crew training requirements, specific to VGP.
WORKING WITH MARITIME SECURITY GUARDS – As part of anti-piracy
measures, many shipping companies now employ armed security guards
aboard vessels that transit pirate waters. However, there are legal and safety
risks associated with the use of armed guards and it is vital to choose a Private
Maritime Company (PMSC) that offers highly competent and professionally trained
guards who have experience in protecting ships against pirate attacks.
SOCIAL MEDIA AT SEA WANT TO BE FAMOUS? – In this programme,
we meet a seafarer who, as part of his birthday celebrations on board, created
a fun video to share with his family and friends back home. But he had been
careless when setting up his social media site, omitting to establish privacy
settings, completely unaware of just how quickly his video might travel and, more
importantly, what other people such as newspaper reporters might do with it!
CARGO CONTAMINATION ON TANKERS – This video and accompanying
workbook provides guidance on the current methods of loading and discharging
cargo. It identifies different types of cargo contamination and their root causes
and explains how to prevent it from happening.
