On Your Side

Ready to usher your kids (or teenagers) back to school? The summer hijinks are behind you and it’s time to get back into the groove. While they may grumble in the morning, whimpering for “five more minutes,” they’ll adjust to those early hours again. Just tell them how we had to climb uphill both ways in the snow when they gripe about the walk to school or the bus stop!

And summer break is over!

Back-to-school season is here…

INGREDIENTS• 1 15-ounce package refrigerated pie crusts• ¼ cup strawberry jam, divided• 2 cups confectioners’ sugar• 2 tablespoons milk• ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Home Made Top Tarts!

1. Preheat oven to 425° F (220° C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. Unroll the pie crusts, place on a lightly floured work surface, and roll the crusts slightly with a rolling pin to square the edges. Cut each crust into 8 equal-sized rectangles. Place about 2 teaspoons of strawberry jam in the center of 8 squares, and spread the jam out to within 1/4 inch of the edge of the pastry square. Top each with another pastry square, and use a fork to crimp the squares together, sealing in the jam. Use a knife to trim the pastries, if desired. Move the filled pastries to the prepared baking sheets.

3. Bake in the preheated oven until the edges are lightly golden brown, about 7 minutes. Allow to cool on the baking sheets. Meanwhile, stir together the confectioners’ sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl to make a spreadable frosting. Spread the cooled tarts with frosting and sprinkle with colored sugar.

Gizmo’s Corner

Because this is such a worthy cause, we’ve pledged

to make a donation for every referral that we receive. It’s that easy.

Recently, the FDA issued a recall of certain batches of the drug Valsartan, which is used

to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. The amount of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a probable human carcinogen,

found in certain batches of Valsartan from the manufacturer in China exceeded

acceptable levels.

Because Valsartan is used in medicines to treat serious medical conditions, the FDA

recommends that members should not stop their medicine until they receive a

replacement product or a different medicine to treat their condition. If you are taking this medication you should contact your doctor

right away for advice.

The biggest concern for patients is about their risk of cancer and better understanding

of how concerned they should be.

My stylish backpack is stuffed with wide-ruled notebook paper, emoji-themed folders, and enough wildly-colored pencils to make my classmates jealous. Wait…I can’t go to school?? What a bummer! Well, can I at least meet the little humans at the bus stop for some scritches? This fall is going to be a little lonely without kids to chase so I guess I better find something mischievous to get up to; can’t let my humans get too complacent. I hope your little one has a blast their first day of school—make sure to give them some kisses from yours truly!

Important Drug Recall Information Regarding Valsartan

1. They’re a charity that creates custom costumes for kids in wheelchairs, designing the costume around the chair. The goal? To make the wheelchairs fun and exciting for the kids who need them.

2. The founders, Ryan and Lana Weimer began the charity for their kids, 3 of whom have Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which requires the use of wheelchairs for the rest of their lives.

3. They saw how much joy their kids got from their decked-out chairs and realized that every child in a wheelchair should feel that way.

4. The charity works by organizing a team of volunteers and artists to build whatever kind of costume the child wants.

5. Each chair costs about $1,500 in materials and 120 hours of build time.

Back-to-School Hacks

Gizmo here!

Color-code the clock: use different colored markers on an analog clock to indicate what activity it’s time for, be it homework, bath time, or bed time. Make a study playlist: having great tunes to jam to makes homework go by a little easier!Never oversleep again: to avoid oversleeping or missing your alarm completely, place their phone in a cup—it will project the volume so it’s much louder, hopefully enough to wake them up!Turn your entryway into a command center: get some large bins and label them for backpacks and shoes. Smaller ones are perfect for schedules or important papers.
