Welcome to the Illinois College of Emergency Physicians’ 2015 Spring Symposium & Annual Business Meeting!

Highlights of the agenda:

• Rebecca Parker, MD, FACEP, Chair of the ACEP Board of Directors, will outline the development of ACEP’s 10 recommendations for the Choos-ing Wisely® campaign and demonstrate their potential cost-saving im-pact on emergency medicine practice

• A panel of experts will examine controversies in head injury and con-cussion management from differing physician perspectives. Panelists include sports medicine physician Holly Benjamin, MD, FACSM; emergency physician George Chiampas, DO, CAQSM, FACEP; and neurosurgeon Julian Bailes, MD.

• Michael Wahl, MD, FACEP, FACMT, Medical Director of the Illinois Poi-son Center, will assess risk evaluation and mitigation strategies for the safe use of ER/LA opioids for patients in the emergency department. This ses-sion is presented in conjunction with CO*RE, the Collaborative for REMS.

• The Resident Speaker Forum will provide an opportunity for profes-sional development for novice speakers looking to polish their lectur-ing skills at a statewide forum, with feedback from an expert panel of judges. One speaker will represent each residency, and a winner will be announced during the Annual Business Meeting.

• A Statewide Research Showcase will spotlight the best in Illinois emergency medicine research. Oral presentations will be given during a morning session, and research posters are on display in the exhibit area.

MINUTESThe 2014 Annual Business Meeting of the Illinois College of Emergency Physicians (ICEP) was held on May 1, 2014 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in conjunction with the 2014 ICEP Spring Symposium. President Edward Ward, MD, MPH, FACEP, called the meeting to order at 8:30 AM.

I. President’s Report

Dr. Ward thanked all of the individuals who made the meeting possible, including Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the event sponsors. Dr. Ward reviewed some of the accomplishments of the past year, highlighting legislative updates: support for Poison Control funding, the ACEP Report Card as a tool for reform, and ICEP’s presence on several key workgroups. He recognized Illinois’ two members who serve on the national ACEP Board of Directors: Rebecca Parker, MD, FACEP, and Mark Mackey, MD, FACEP. Dr. Ward noted ICEP’s increased financial sta-bility in 2014 as a result of selling the former office space, refinancing the current office, and continued partnerships with ITLS and tenants.

II. Recognition of Outgoing Board Members

Dr. Ward recognized ICEP’s four outgoing Board members: Helene Connelly, MD, FACEP; Marc Dorf-man, MD, FACEP; Heather Prendergast, MD, FACEP; and resident member John Moustoukas, MD. All were thanked for their service to ICEP.

III. Announcement of Board Election Results

Dr. Ward announced the results of the Board of Direc-tors elections. Four active members and one resident member were elected in 2014. The active members elected were incumbent Mila Felder, MD, FACEP and new members D. Mark Courtney, MD, FACEP; Yanina Purim-Shem-Tov, MD, FACEP; and Ernest Wang, MD, FACEP. Archit Gulati, MD was elected as the resident member. Dr. Ward congratulated the incoming Board members.

IV. Presentation of Awards

A. Downstate Member AwardWalter Bradley, MD, MBA, FACEP was presented with the Downstate Member Award, which is conferred upon an ICEP member from outside the metropoli-tan Chicago area who has made a consistent effort to advance emergency medicine in Illinois despite

lengthy travel. Dr. Bradley was a member of the ICEP Board of Directors from 2000 to 2007 and served as Secretary-Treasurer during this time. Dr. Bradley served ICEP as Chair of the EMS Committee and the Illinois EMS Forum for six years, and continues to be an active member of the EMS Committee today.

B. ICEP Meritorious Service Award

Carolynn Zonia, DO, FACEP, FACOEP was presented with the ICEP Meritorious Service Award to recognize her significant contribution to the advancement of emergency medicine by exemplary service. Dr. Zonia is a Past President of ICEP and served on the Board of Directors from 1998 to 2006. She serves as Co-Chair of the Patient & Physician Advocacy Committee with Dr. Glushak. She is also a longtime member of ICEP’s Education Committee. Dr. Zonia was the recipient of ICEP’s Bill B. Smiley Award in 2008.

C. Bill B. Smiley Meritorious Service Award

Cai Glushak, MD, FACEP was honored with the Bill B. Smiley Meritorious Service Award, ICEP’s high-est honor, in recognition of his contributions to the advancement of emergency medicine in Illinois. Dr. Glushak is a Past President of ICEP and served on the Board of Directors for a total of three terms, serving from 1993 to 1996 and again from 1997 to 2003. Dr. Glushak is the Co-Chair of the Patient & Physician Advocacy Committee with Dr. Zonia and also repre-sents ICEP as an ACEP Councillor.

V. ACEP Update

ACEP Board of Directors member Rebecca Parker, MD, FACEP gave a short update on ACEP activities. She highlighted the impact of health care reform on emergency medicine, reviewing ACEP’s Just 2% cam-paign. She discussed the national and state impact of ACEP’s 2014 Report Card. She highlighted other national initiatives, including the Choosing Wisely campaign, to emphasize the different programs and partnerships ACEP participates in. She concluded with a reminder that ACEP14 will be held in Chicago in October.

VI. Passing the Gavel

Dr. Ward introduced incoming president David Griffen, MD, PhD, FACEP to the membership and turned over the gavel symbolizing the ICEP presidency to him.

As Dr. Griffen assumed the presidency, he thanked Dr. Ward for his outstanding service to the College over the past year. He presented Dr. Ward with a plaque commemorating his year as President and a thank you gift on behalf of the Board, membership, and staff.

VII. Adjournment

There being no further business, the meeting was ad-journed at 9:00 AM.
