“(…) When the reformer Justus Jonas was sent from Wittenberg to Halle in 1541 to preach Protestant sermons, the church was still under construction – for me, it’s a beautiful image that symbolises the introduction of the Reformation. (…) visit the market church for a tour of the Hausmann towers, organ recitals, church services and prayers. Meet beforehand at the Handel statue, like a true resident of Halle.”

ScottyScout Sophie Tetzlaff studied church music in Halle and loves the sound of the city:

Market churchThe market church, or Church of Our Lady, is a late Gothic hall church dating from the 16th century. It was built between two pairs of towers that belonged to the churches of St Gertrude and St Mary, which formerly stood on this site. Justus Jonas the Elder reformed the church in 1541 and Luther preached here on his final visit to the city in 1546. Samuel Scheidt, Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow and Friedemann Bach all worked as composers and organists at the church. Luther’s death mask is now on display here.Martin Luther’s original death mask is just one of many treasures and artefacts from the Reformation that can be found in Halle’s market church. The reformer’s wax mask is on display in one of the tower rooms, along with a plaster cast made at a later date and the pulpit from Luther’s time. The mask is believed to have been created from a plaster cast taken by Halle painter Lukas Furtenagel on 19 February 1546 as Luther lay on his death bed. Since Luther's body had to be transported to Wittenberg for the planned burial, his coffin was placed in the vestry of the market church in Halle on the night of 20 February 1546. Justus Jonas, a friend of Luther and the first Protestant incumbent of the Church of Our Lady in Halle, acquired the death mask for the local church. The pulpit from Luther’s lifetime is an impressive example of Re-naissance woodcarving from central Germany and was originally installed in this church. Martin Luther is believed to have used it when delivering his sermons. The pulpit in use today dates from around 1547. Luther gave three sermons at the market church in Halle: on 5 August 1545 and on 6 and 26 January 1546.

The Marienbibliothek church libraryThe Marienbibliothek church library, dating from 1552, also belongs to the jurisdiction of the market church and is one of the oldest and largest Protestant church libraries in Germany. The library was es-tablished in response to Luther’s call to create Protestant schools and libraries in order to promote learning at all levels of society. It remained the only public library in Halle for nearly 150 years until the University of Halle was founded in 1694. The collection compris-es 36,000 volumes. In addition to 400 incunabula (printed works from before 1500), it contains works from all fields of knowledge dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Bibles with handwritten inscriptions by Luther are the most treasured items. They include a Bible that belonged to Felicitas von Selmenitz – a first edition of Luther’s 1534 German translation.Browse a digital edition of the Bible on our website at: www.hallesaale.com

“This library has its roots firmly in the Reformation as it directly relates to Luther’s writings of 1524, in which he called for the establishment of schools and promotion of languages, and the provision of good libraries or book repositories for the people. (…) Walking through the Marienbibliothek library, which is staffed by friendly, knowledgeable volunteers and the library manager, really opened my (…) eyes to the educational revolution brought about by the Reformation.”

For ScottyScout Martin Kirzeder, books, learning and education are an important part of his pro-fessional life – he is a teacher at a secondary school in Halle:

Halle cathedral

C ATH ED R A L A N D N E W RESI D EN CE

Halle cathedral, built in around 1300, was originally a Dominican monastery church. From 1520, it was converted by Cardinal Albrecht into a collegiate church for his chosen city of residence. The strik-ing round-arched gables, pulpit and 17 larger-than-life statues are among the outstanding sculptural works that attest to the former opulence of the Renaissance interior. Following the Reformation, the cathedral was used as a court and palace church by local rulers, and early baroque elements were added. In 1688, Elector Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg established a Protestant community here and offered refuge to persecuted Huguenots, who soon formed a sizeable minority in the city. The community is still active in Halle today. Next to the cathedral is the New Residence, built between 1531 and 1539 in the Renaissance style by Cardinal Albrecht and orig-inally intended as a Catholic university. Tip: The market church’s Hausmann towers offer a spectacular view of the cathedral, which resembles a treasure chest when viewed from above due to the round-arched gables.

The Hallesches Brauhaus is the perfect place to sit and contemplate the fate of Hans von Schönitz while enjoying a delicious, bottom-fer-mented Schönitzer Pils. The brewpub occupies part of the site of the run-down Kühler Brunnen palace built by von Schönitz, a noble-man and son of a wealthy salt spring owner. The lavish Renaissance building was decorated by notable artists of the time, including Lucas Cranach the Elder, Matthias Grünewald and Conrad Faber von Kreuznach. Von Schönitz made his fortune in the service of Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg – not always by legal means. He procured money and artworks for the Cardinal, managed his build-ing works and became his chamberlain. Eventually, accusations of embezzlement, and to a lesser extent the love intrigues that were the talk of the common people, led to the nobleman’s imprison-ment. He confessed his guilt in a rushed trial and was executed at the gallows in 1535.The affair was regarded as a scandalous and arbitrary act on the part of Cardinal Albrecht. Luther publicly denounced him, calling the Cardinal a murderer because of the blood on his hands and also condemning his shameful antics with his mistress, thereby giving voice to the sentiments of the people. However, modern research has concluded that the case did not amount to judicial murder. The surviving parts of the palace – the most important Renaissance building of its kind in central Germany – are to be found between the modern building that is home to the Hallesches Brauhaus and the dilapidated house at Markt 16. The pleasure-seeking life of the former owner finds its echo in today’s brewpub, which hosts a wide range of events from carnival celebrations to concerts, but without the dubious excesses.Text: ScottyScout Martin Kirzeder

Archbishop Ernst of Saxony (1476–1513) laid the foundation stone for Moritzburg Castle in 1484 and moved into his new residence along with his court in May 1503. By this time, the building was virtually finished except for the chapel. Arch-bishop Ernst’s successor, Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg (1490–1545) – Martin Luther’s powerful adversary – decorated Moritzburg Castle with sumptuous furnishings including rich wooden panelling, magnificent tiled stoves, luxurious carpets, murals and exquisite paintings by the great artists of the day, such as Cranach, Grünewald and Dürer. The castle was severe-ly damaged during the Thirty Years’ War, and was converted into a museum in around 1900. Following the completion of a spectacular extension in 2008, the modern galleries now main-ly display art from the classical modernist era, including Her-mann Gerlinger’s collection of works by the Brücke artists and paintings from Lyonel Feininger’s Halle Cycle. The Gothic vaults of Moritzburg Castle house a fine collection of medieval carved sculptures and decorative arts from across central Germany. Courtyard of Moritzburg Castle

“When Martin Luther wrote his 95 Theses in 1517, he also sent them to Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg, the Archbishop of Mainz, whom Luther rightly suspected of being behind the indulgences then being sold around Wittenberg that were making life difficult for him. Albrecht had built up debts in the course of acquiring his official positions – the money from the sale of indulgences was to go towards paying off these debts. The official purpose of the campaign was to fund the rebuilding of St Peter’s basilica in Rome. This huge church crowdfunding campaign got under way here at Moritzburg Castle. At the beginning of 1517, Albrecht, now residing in the castle, handed over the privilege of selling indulgences to the Dominican monk Johann Tetzel. But the Reformation ultimately triumphed and Albrecht was driven from Moritzburg Castle in 1541. (…) Every time I come here, I’m surprised and delighted by the new silhouette of the building – it’s a place with both a history and a future. Before or after visiting the castle, it’s worth taking a stroll along Kleine Ulrichstraße, a street full of cafés and pubs popular with the city’s students.”

The historical library

Francke monument

A donation of 4 thalers and 16 groschen in a collection box prompt-ed theologian August Hermann Francke to establish a “school town” in 1698. The associated era-defining reforms put Luther’s ideas into practice and saw them carried throughout Europe and as far as India and North America by Francke’s students. This mission was supported by the creation of the world’s first Bible institute, where pioneering materials and techniques made it possible to mass-produce Bibles for the first time. Up to 3,000 people lived and worked in the school town at its height, and Francke’s contemporaries saw it as the “New Jerusalem”. To this day, the Francke Foundations remain a vibrant learning environ-ment consisting of museums, schools and institutes. The impres-sive ensemble has been nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and comprises the historical orphanage, the longest half-tim-bered house in Europe, the oldest civic museum room and the ear-ly modern library, in which the bookshelves are arranged like the wings of a stage.

“In winter, when it gets dark early and pupils, teachers and professors scurry from building to building because of the cold, it’s easy to imagine how people lived in this school community in Halle over 200 years ago. There is the same bustle and vibrancy as in 1698, when the first buildings were being constructed. (…) Francke didn’t want the buildings to reflect their specific educational purpose. They were all intended to be used according to need, which led him to choose standardised designs. I see this style of architecture as a forerunner of the ideas behind the Bauhaus movement. For Francke and the Pietism he represented, the halftimbered buildings customary at the time and their many embellishments were a distraction from what was important.”

ScottyScout Claudia Langosch was born in Halle and works as a guide at the Francke Foundations:

Cardinal Albrecht had the Stadtgottesacker cemetery built in the mid-16th century. Master builder Nickel Hoffmann designed it to resemble an Italian “Campo Santo”, and in doing so created a unique Renaissance-style cemetery north of the Alps. The cemetery is surrounded by 94 ornate arched graves in which famous inhabitants of the city have been laid to rest, including August Hermann Francke. Visitors to this extraordinary place will note how the overall design and atmosphere create a sense of harmony and peace.

“Gottesackerstraße manages the remarkable feat of leading up to the gate tower at the entrance from three directions. I particularly like it here in the autumn, when the architecture blends with nature in a very special way …”

ScottyScout Lars R. Schulz studied theology at Martin Luther Univer-sity of Halle-Wittenberg:

The fountain in Hallmarkt Square depicts various episodes in the history of Halle, in some cases with considerable artistic license. The ecstatic image of Cardinal Albrecht with his mistresses proved particularly controversial when the fountain was unveiled.Stadtgottesacker cemetery
