WORD on the
STREET Tulip Street Christian
Church DECEMBER 2019
Think of the last time someone gave you the silent treatment. What feelings come to mind when you think
about such an experience? Awkward? Cold? Uncomfortable? Whatever word you choose it is mostly
likely not a word with a positive association.
As Christians, who have had access to the Word of God since we were first able to read we can easily forget
what it would have been like for those who lived during the first Christmas. They didn't have the Bible as we have
it today and for them they had't heard from God in several hundred years. They must have felt they were
being given "The Silent Treatment" from God. Imagine the hope that must have instantly been sparked among people when hearing that the Messiah was born.
Imagine the light that would have created in what must have seemed like a dark time for people.
During Christmas there are so many things that can draw us to the darkness of this world rather than the light of
Christ, it is my hope that you choose to celebrate, remember, and worship The Light, this Christmas Eve.
~Ken Yanish

Good rainy Saturday afternoon as I write this – I’ve been down to the kitchen in the church, where Janice and Sally are making some preparations for tomorrow’s church Thanksgiving. I’ve printed the sermon for tomorrow, and made preparations from my end. I’m thinking just how many moving parts there are for tomorrow – a skype call from missionaries, praying over the Operation Christmas Child shoe-boxes, getting the room ready for the meal – tons of stuff going on. And by the time you read this, it will all just be memory. Its easy to get taken up with stuff that quickly becomes a memory. It’s not that we shouldn’t do those things, its that sometimes, we place an insane amount of importance on them, and by doing so, miss the big picture. Did you realize that while I mentioned a lot of good stuff in that opening paragraph, I didn’t mention Jesus or sharing the gospel, and yet, shouldn’t that be the most important thing about our gatherings.
A Note from Jim
“I want to encourage you. Make a
commitment to the stuff that lasts. I mean, do what you need to do – work, eat, play, go to
school – but in all of it, remember the Giver of
all good things has a meaning and purpose
beyond just the memory of yesterday.”
Page 4 WORD ON THE STREET
I didn’t mention communion, and yet remembering the Lord’s death in this way shows the world our faith in what came from that death. I didn’t mention singing together, shaking hands, or any of the stuff that will last beyond tomorrow. See what I mean? And this is just Thanksgiving time. Imagine how hard it is to focus during the Christmas season (which, by the way, started somewhere just before Halloween but after back-to-school for the retail world)! So wouldn’t it be nice to slow down and just have a conversation? What are you reading right now? Me, I’m reading Real-Life Discipleship by Jim Putman, and just finished Something Needs to Change by David Platt. What’s your favorite coffee? Mine is any kind black. What are you struggling with? Me – getting older and seeing how short time really is. Where have you seen God show up lately? Lots of places in the church and around! Where does
He seem absent. Hmmm… Maybe just hard to see what He’s up to sometimes… Those aren’t just preacher conversations – those are strategic gospel conversations you can have with anyone. I want to encourage you. Make a commitment to the stuff that lasts. I mean, do what you need to do – work, eat, play, go to school – but in all of it, remember the Giver of all good things has a meaning and purpose beyond just the memory of yesterday. Use everything at your disposal to share the gospel with people, before they, too, become a memory. Love on folks like Jesus does, with an everlasting love that shares eternity with the broken and the outcast, and never loses sight of the eternity of the soul, even while moving through the temporary of today.
Merry Christmas!
