Happy Mother's Day!! Spring is in full force - the bluebonnets are blooming,

the Rangers are playing, and DAPA has many things in store!

First, I would like to start by thanking our April General Meeting speaker

Paul C. Watler, Partner at Jackson Walker for putting on a fabulous presen-

tation regarding "Freedom of the Press and 'Fake' News: Modern Challenges

to the First Amendment." That was one of the best CLE presentations I

have attended in a while!! And a big thank you to our sponsor RASI, too!

President-Elect, Laura Kehoe, CRPTM

and NFPA Primary, Cindy Welch,

RP® recently traveled to Lexington, KY to attend NFPA's Joint Conference

and brought back some great ideas related to leadership, certification, and

regulation, and were able to network with many of our NFPA friends from

all around the U.S.

DAPA's Leadership/Management Section held its meeting on May 1st - John McShane, attorney and long-

time friend of T. Boone Pickens, spoke about "Boone-isms" and shared leadership advice from Mr. Pick-

ens' book, "The First Billion is the Hardest."

I recently had the opportunity to meet with a lovely student member from the Paralegal Association of

Central Ohio (PACO) who was passing through Dallas on her way to Austin. We had a great conversation

about the future of the paralegal profession. She asked me what I have done to contribute to my organiza-

tion, as well as at other levels - such as at the state and national levels, and how she could help contribute to

the success of paralegal profession. I explained to her the best way to give back was to try to stay involved at

all levels if possible (local, state, and national), and always keep learning! I also explained the importance of

volunteering, pro bono, and community service, and if she couldn't stay involved at all levels, to at least stay

involved with her association.

This month's General Membership Meeting will be held on May 15th and features Speaker Elaine Flud,

General Counsel of DFW International Airport. Ms. Flud will be speaking about legal issues involving

DFW Airport and should prove to be a very interesting meeting!

DAPA is currently planning for our Region II Meeting for NFPA that will be held in Dallas this year the

weekend of June 1-3. Our Region II Director, Mianne Besser, from Denver, Colorado, will be in attend-

ance. If you would like to attend the meeting on Saturday, please rsvp to [email protected]. We

will also be planning a Friday night social event, so be on the lookout for more details!

DAPA's Pro Bono and Community Services Chairperson, Katina Whitfield, will be participating in a High

School Prom for Special Needs Kids that will be attended by more than 75 local students. It's the first event

of its kind in North Texas and includes all of the surrounding local school districts, and students that are

home-schooled. Some of the kids weren't planning on attending their proms because they didn't feel like

they "belonged there." So this is going to be a very wonderful and memorable evening for these special

needs high school juniors and seniors - one they will remember for years to come!

To wrap things up, I cannot say this enough - we are always looking for mentors for our Mentor/Protégé

Program! If you are a paralegal with five (5) or more years of substantive paralegal experience and are

willing to assist new paralegals, we need you! Applications for mentors and proteges can be found within

this newsletter.

And just a reminder, Texas Lawyers for Children (TLC) needs our help! If you haven't already signed up,

I highly encourage you to do so. TLC makes a difference in the lives of abused and neglected children, let's

do what we can to help. You can find the link to sign up under the Pro Bono tab at

www.dallasparalegals.org.

Again, I hope everyone has a very Happy Mother's Day!!
