From Your Director During the month of June the Southern Bap-
tist Convention will meet in Houston June
10-12. According to Article III of the SBC
constitution, every cooperating Southern
Baptist Church is eligible to elect one mes-
senger to the Annual meeting. In addition
the churches can elect one messenger for
each 250 members or for each $250 paid to
the work of the Convention during the fiscal year up to a
total of ten messengers. So why would a church want to
send messengers? Unlike some religious groups Southern
Baptist operate with an inverted pyramid with the main focus
being upon the local church and the autonomy of the local
church. What that means is that each year messengers from
the churches come together to set the direction of the South-
ern Baptist Convention for the future. From the smallest
churches to the largest churches the voice of the Convention
is from the pew. Let me encourage each church to elect and
send messengers.
During the last week of Jesus physical life on earth there
were Greeks who came to Philip with the question, “We
want to see Jesus?” Today, people do not really want to see
new programs or flashy activities. What people want to see is
the reality of Jesus in the daily life of the children of God.
They want to see Jesus. They want to see Jesus in the way
we make decisions. They want to see Jesus in the values we
live. And they want to see Jesus in the conversations we en-
gage in. It’s something to think about.
Randy Gilchrist
Executive Director
Did you know that the city of Baytown covers
approximately 35 square miles? And did you
know that the population of the two major zip
codes (77520 and77521) in 2012 totals 85,996
individuals? By 2017 the population is pro-
jected to grow by 10%. The most significant
age group is “Millenials” or ages 11-30 that
make up 30% of the total population in both zip codes while
55+ make up 10%. The largest ethnic group in the 77520 zip
code is Hispanic (53%) population and Anglo (40%) in the
77521 zip code.
Within the two zip codes there are fifteen churches affiliated
with SJBA; 10 Anglo, 3 Hispanic, and 2 African American.
In 2012 these churches reported a total membership of
10,192, with an average worship attendance of 3,790 and
3,220 in a weekly Bible Study program. During 2012 the
churches reported baptizing 296 individuals who made pro-
fessions of faith. If one divided the worship attendance by
the population .08% of the population attends these fifteen
churches. By 2017 the population is expected to increase by
8,599 or 10% or 1,720 annually.
Pray the church members will see the community with the
eyes and heart of Jesus. Pray that God will touch the heart of
the person living within a two foot circle where we stand.
Pray that the disciples of Jesus will share what God has done
in their life as they go about their daily routine. Pray for the
lost, and ways to intentionally develop relationships.
For the Common Good Carey. D. Froelich, Associate Director
for Church Enrichment
An old story tells about a group of peo-
ple who lived on the coast of the great
ocean and who became concerned about sailors whose ships
floundered on the rocks near the shore. They watched as the
seamen were cast into the waters, with many of them failing
to make it to land safely. The concerned citizens got together
and formed a life-saving team who erected and manned a
simple station whose purpose was to bring the shipwrecked
sailors safely to shore. After a few years of successful res-
cues, some on the team began thinking that the station house
was rather poorly equipped and not very comfortable for
those who waited there to go out to the men cast into the sea.
The team raised money and built a newer, nicer, more com-
fortable station house. After dedicating it, the team members
noticed as the nearly drowned sailors came into the house,
their clothes soaked with salt water, the furnishings in the
house deteriorated rather quickly. The team made the deci-
sion that the newly rescued sailors should be kept outside
until they dried off. As the years passed, more and more at-
tention was given to the station house and less and less atten-
tion to the sailors. Soon, the team decided that the porch of
the station house would be fine for any sailors who found the
house. The house became a beautiful and comfortable place
for the residents to gather and talk about the days when sail-
ors were rescued from the sea, but rarely did they actually
get into the boat and put out to collect those drowning men.
The parable is obvious, isn’t it? Far too many churches in our
country have become comfortable places where people gath-
er to talk about the importance of saving men. You’ve heard
these statistics before: In SJBA churches less than 2.5% of
the people in our area are in attendance on any given Sunday.
Fewer than 7,000 people assemble for the worship of Holy
God, while our total population exceeds 270,000 people. Of
that population SJBA churches baptized about 540 people
during the previous year. The question for every congrega-
tion, for every pastor and each member is simple: Are we a
life-saving station or a comfortable retreat?
