On the Internet, an intelligent agent (or simply an agent) is a program that gathers information or performs some other service (typically search queries at this point) across the web.

Typically, an agent program, using parameters you have provided, searches all or some part of the Internet, gathers information you're interested in, and presents it to you on a daily or other periodic basis.

Intelligent agents or bots are software elements that work without the assistance of users by making choices.

Choices are based on rules that software developers have identified and built into the software.

TYPES OF INTELLIGENT AGENTS

BUYER AGENTS (SHOPPING BOTS)

These bots help Internet surfers find products and services they are searching for. For example, when a person surfs for an item on eBay, at the bottom of the page there is a list of similar products that other customers who did the same search looked at. This is because it is assumed the user tastes are relatively similar and they will be interested in the same products

USER AGENTS (PERSONAL BOTS)

These agents are meant to carry out tasks automatically for the user. For example, some bots sort emails according to the user's order of preference, assemble customized news reports (e.g. newshub), or fill out web page forms with the user's stored information.

PREDICTIVE AGENTS

The agents keep track of company inventory levels, observe competitors' prices and relay them back to the company, watch stock manipulation by insider trading and rumors, etc.

LEARNING AGENTS

A learning agent (also called remembrance) is capable of learning individuals’ preferences and make suggestions

GAME AGENTS

Game Bot is a robot (or "bot") that maintains a list of Internet games people are currently playing. The bot is able to log into several servers simultaneously, and share this common list between each server. Its purpose is to make it easier for people to gather games when they want to play something.

An agent that helps consumers decide what product best fits their requirements by narrowing down the selection through a filtering process.

Consumer specify requirements and constraints and the system returns a list of products that best meets their desire.
