Well the new year is upon us. We had a great boating season last year and I’m looking forward to an even better one next year. Although the boats are all win-terized and put away for the year it doesn’t mean we don’t have anything to do.

Our Administrative Officer, Douglas Riley, AP is busy at work lining up speakers for the next year. He did a great job last year and is looking for your help this year. Please drop him a line if you have an idea. January starts off with a great speaker on the Boy Scouts of America and Sea Scouts.

I will be going down the day after our January meeting. This meet-ing is a great opportunity for all members. Please let me know if you will be there.

At the end of January we have the Baltimore Boat show. We need help staffing it. Please see the help wanted ad below. This year we’ll have a special treat in the form of a boating simulator for training. Dundalk is looking into purchasing it’s own simulator for use locally to

HELP WANTED— THE BALTIMORE BOAT SHOW

The Baltimore Boat Show runs from January 29th through February 1st. We need help staffing the

ing public and educate them about safe boating and what a great organization the United States Power

Squadron truly is. In addition to helping the public you will gain free admission into the boat show.

This year we’ve got something new planned. We’re hoping to have an interactive computer simula-

tor. For a lot of us this will be the first chance to see one in person. This simulator features multiple

display screens and real boat controls. It gives the student a very realistic learning opportunity while

being able to be in a classroom environment. It is really something to see.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Goodbye warm weather. Hello winter and 2015! What will this New Year bring?

The Squadron is trying to find a way for people with walking disabilities to attend our Change of Watch Dinner on Saturday, March 21

st by parking below at Balti-

more Yacht Club and catching a ride to the top of the hill. Look for more information in the Change of Watch invita-tion.

The Nominating Committee is looking for mem-bers to move up in the world. Please talk with Walter Neese or Sue Bussey if you are up to the job. The Squadron needs you! It takes active members to keep the Squadron going, so please help out.

Don’t forget the get together at Commander Hall’s house for cruise planning on Saturday, January 10, 2015.

Good food and great people all working for one thing – to make our 2015 cruises the best ever! You don’t need a boat to take part in this event, so please attend.

I want to thank all the great people who have sup-ported me in my time with the Squadron. My problem now is health, as it is with some of you. Our get up and go has got up and went!

May we all have good health and a happy, pros-perous New Year! Stay safe and drive carefully.

Respectfully Submitted,

P/C Ken Finck, AP

Executive Officer

TREASURER’ S REPORT

The squadrons finances are in good shape. We have made our annual contribution of one dollar per mem-ber to the USPS Education Fund. This fund is used to help develop new and improved educational courses and materials for USPS.

All bills have been paid and we have more cash in the bank than at this time last year. Part of this increase is due to well run and well attended squadron fund raising events like the Wurst cookout and the Crab feast. Please

consider how important these fund raisers are to the squadron each year when considering if you can help with them or attend them.

Respectfully submitted,

Lt/C Richard D. Bussey, Treasurer

EDUCATIONAL OFFICER

Classrooms Needed: We desperately need to find alternate places to hold Advance Classes – preferably for free - around the Towson/

Middle River area!

Please check places you go (churches, meeting halls, etc.) and look around your communities to seek out possibili-

ties. Your help is Greatly Appreciated!!

This will determine how many Advanced Courses we can teach next year.

The major hurdle with BYC, for many classes, is that we can only teach every other week due to Executive & Gen-

eral Membership meetings. A 12 long week course now takes 24 weeks.

2015 Instructors’ Meeting: We will be having an Instructors’ Meeting January 21, 2015 at 6:00 PM at BYC.

At that time we will be setting up the Training Schedule for 2015.

Fred Schwing will no longer be able to teach the course, so we need a volunteer to step forward. Please contact me

if you are willing to teach this class.

MELP - 2015: The Rectory School in Pomfret, CT has received to “Go Ahead” their 2015 “March Experimental Learning Pro-

gram”. They will be offering ABC to a group of 12-15 middle school aged children (and 2 chaperones). We will

be teaching 2 classes covering 2 chapters a class, with the final exam at the end of the second class.

Classes will be held at the Holiday Inn in the Inner Harbor - 301 W Lombard St, Baltimore, MD 21201.

Please contact me if you would like to participate and help.

EA Engineering, Science and Technology: We have been contacted by EA Engineering, Science and Technology to possibly teach some of their associates

ABC. They may also be interested in some of our advanced courses. ABC would be taught over this winter at

Hunt Valley.

Please contact me if you would like to participate and help.

Help Save a Child's Life - Become a Life Jacket Loaner Site ANNAPOLIS, Md., December 8, 2014 – Waterfront businesses, local organizations or government agencies can help themselves, and at the same time, also possibly help save a child’s life. All they have to do is join the nation’s largest Kids’ Life Jacket Loaner Program offered by the non-profit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water. By becoming one of the Foundation’s new no-cost loaner site locations available for 2015, a local business or group can have positive interaction with the boating public when a jacket is needed for the day or weekend. However, loaner site applications will only be accepted at www.BoatUS.org/life-jacket-loaner until March 1, 2015. BoatUS Foundation Kids' Life Jacket Loaner Program loans out over 140,000 each year nationwide at no cost to bor-rowers or loaner sites. SECRETARY’S REPORT

So another sailing season has come to a close. S/V Tiphys is now on the hard and awaiting the day when we will once again have her launched. Between now and then there is a lot of work to be done. Our offseason list includes plans to upgrade our electronics and replace some of our canvas among other things. Only time will tell how many of the items on this list are actually accom-plished. Either way, Captain Susan and I are already ex-cited about another summer of fun and exciting sailing on the Chesapeake!

The Squadron Holiday Party this year was a wonderful event! There were LOTS of great food, yummy deserts and many friends with which to share it all. There was a pirate’s gift exchange, which was enjoyed by all, and I still have some regret for not snagging the lava lamp when I had the chance!

There was also an appearance by Read Van Santa Zile who expressed his heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to the worthy cause of Toys for Tots. Read

collected two large boxes of toys that will be distributed to those in need.

If you didn’t make the Holiday Party or haven’t

seen your Squadron friends for a while the next opportu-

nity will be at the Cruise Planning Party at the home of

Mary and John Hall on Saturday January 10th beginning

at 1:00 pm. Why not come out, bring a snack to share,

enjoy some food and friendship, help plan our cruising

agenda for the season and get in an early mood for some

warm weather on the Bay? We hope to see you there!

ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER

Hopefully, the January edition of On the Horizon will arrive before our Cruise Planning Meeting on Satur-day, January 10, 2015, at 1:00 p.m.! In many ways, the Cruise Planning Meeting is our most important gathering of the year, during which we plan our cruise and activity schedule for the upcoming boating season. Whether you have a favorite cruise destination or somewhere new and exotic in mind, please come on January 10

th and we’ll try

to make it happen. The Cruise Planning Meeting takes place at the home of Commander and Mrs. John Hall, 702 Stone Barn Road, Towson, Maryland 21286.

Another important date for your calendar is Sat-urday, March 21, 2015, when the Squadron will assem-ble at Baltimore Yacht Club for our annual Change of Watch Dinner. Then, the following weekend, March 27-29, 2015, is the District 5 Spring Conference in Ocean City, Maryland. We’d sure like to have a big turn-out from Dundalk for both events.

We’re also looking forward to learning all about the Sea Scout program at the Squadron’s next member-ship meeting on Wednesday, January 21, 2015, at 7:30 p.m.

And don’t forget to volunteer for the Power Squadron’s Information Booth at the Baltimore Boat Show from Thursday, January 29 – Sunday, February 1, 2015. Please touch bases with Tracey Steunes for a time.

It’s going to be a great year for the Dundalk Sail & Power Squadron!

Lt/C Douglas B. Riley, AP

FROM LEGENDS TO PIRATES!

If you missed any of our meetings in 2014, you missed some wonderful speakers! True to the educational goals of the United States Power Squadrons, we learned a great deal in the year

past, and had a lot of fun doing so. In May, we heard from Brian Wessner of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, who taught us all about water

quality in the Chesapeake Bay and what needs to be done to make the entire bay swimmable and fishable again. In June, our guest was a Maryland legend, The Honorable Helen Delich Bentley, for whom the Port of

Baltimore is now named. Helen delighted us with her history of the Port of Baltimore, and she was delighted, in turn, to receive a standing ovation following her informative address and witty sidebars. Deservedly, our meeting room was filled to capacity that night.

In August, we had fire boats! There were three of them altogether from the Bowleys Quarters and North

Point-Edgemere Volunteer Fire Departments, joining us with Lieutenant Joe Walters and his fire-fighting crews for a cookout at BYC, followed by a readiness exercise as the sun began to set over Sue Creek. It was definitely a night to remember, especially when a nearby pleasure craft crossed into the liquid arch of a water cannon!

In September, we had a very moving talk from Master Chief Melvin Johnson, U.S. Navy (retired), about the

2004 capsizing of an Inner Harbor water taxi with 25 souls aboard and the valiant efforts of the Navy reservists fortuitously drilling at Fort McHenry that saved untold lives.

In October, Captain John Hamil of the Maryland Association of Pilots told us all about the life of a

Chesapeake Bay Pilot, meeting ocean-going vessels as they enter Maryland waters and piloting them into the Port of Baltimore and beyond. He shared with us harrowing films of pilots jumping from their boats onto rope ladders to scurry aboard the ships they would soon command. More so, he graphically showed us how very limited is the visibility of a pilot aboard one of those big ships whose bows we occasionally (and stupidly) try to cross.

Then, in November, we had pirates! Two of the fiercest swashbucklers you have ever seen told us all

about their pirate adventures aboard the Fearless, entertaining children and adults alike on two-hour pirate cruises that originate at Fells Point. They even forced us to talk like pirates, play pirate games, and drink grog!

Of course, in December, we had a visit from Santa Claus who, perhaps on a future visit, will share with us

his nighttime trans-oceanic navigational techniques. And, in January, to balance out the very bad influence of our pirate guests, our speaker will be Mr. Laurie

Davis of the Boy Scouts of America, who will tell us all about the Sea Scout Program in Maryland. We always have fun at our meetings, so be sure to attend and bring along a friend!
