Hello readers and greetings from warm and sunny Singapore. We are back again with another brand new issue of Southeast Asia Building with lots of new projects to share with you.

First on the list are some new and upcoming sports facilities, which have redefined the traditional design of stadiums and sports complexes. Gracing the cover of this issue is the new Singapore Sports Hub. Currently under construction, it will feature the largest

free-spanning dome roof in the world when it opens in 2014. You can also read about the new Hangzhou Sports Park, new National Stadium of Japan and new National Stadium and Sports Village in Ethiopia all in the architecture section.

Next, we look at how the interior spaces of restaurants can be creatively designed to help them look and function better. I hope you find the case studies on David’s restaurant in Melbourne, Restaurant Noma in Copenhagen, Yoobi in London and Sur in Singapore interesting to read.

Playground design has changed a great deal over the years and now the custom-built playgrounds seem to be the new trend as they offer more flexibility to create unique play spaces for children of all ages. We also explore the the increasing need to make playgrounds safe for children.

Plus, we explore the topic of low-energy or zero-energy buildings in this issue by showcasing the new Energy Dream Center in Seoul. Developed for the Seoul Metropolitan Government in Seoul, Korea, the Energy Dream Center is a lighthouse project on energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and sustainability in building design.

Lastly, we have a show review of WORLDBEX 2013, which concluded successfully in Manila and a preview of the upcoming ARCHIDEX 2013 show in Kuala Lumpur.

Enjoy your reading! If you have suggestions for future topics to be covered in the magazine, please let me know via phone or e-mail.

Singapore – CapitaLand’s wholly-owned serviced residence business unit, The Ascott Limited (Ascott), has been awarded a contract to manage its second serviced residence in Iskandar Malaysia. The 310-unit Somerset Medini Iskandar will be Singapore-based Ascott’s largest property in Malaysia when it opens in end 2015. Somerset Medini Iskandar is part of the ‘Urban Wellness’ integrated development by Pulau Indah Ventures Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between Khazanah Nasional Berhad and Temasek Holdings (Private) Limited. Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak and Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony for this integrated development on 19 February 2013. Mr Chong Kee Hiong, Ascott’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “We see immense potential for serviced residences in Iskandar. The economic corridor has attracted investments of over RM106 billion. Ascott will gain significant advantage by having a serviced residence in Medini, one of the fastest-growing areas within Iskandar. It is surrounded by exciting developments that will spur the growth of the Malaysian economy. This will bring a strong influx of expatriates as well as foreign and domestic travellers, creating demand for our serviced residence.” Mr Chong added: “Ascott will be the first international serviced residence operator in Iskandar when we open Somerset Puteri Harbour next year. The addition of Somerset Medini Iskandar strengthens our presence in this burgeoning region. Somerset Medini Iskandar further enhances Ascott’s position as the largest international owner and operator of serviced residences in Malaysia. We now have 10 properties with more than 1,800 apartment units in the country. This expansion will allow greater synergy and economies of scale in our operations.” n

Singapore – Data just released by the USA show that American hardwood lumber shipments to Southeast Asia were up by 32 percent in value and 29 percent in volume for the year 2012 compared to 2011. Log shipments were up 9 percent and 15 percent respectively and veneer increased 9 percent and 13 percent. American hardwood flooring was up 143 percent in value and 124 percent in volume, albeit from a lower base. Commenting on the results John Chan, AHEC’s Director in Hong Kong, said: “Exports of American hardwood to Greater China and SE Asia in 2012 have reached an all-time high record while the world is still facing economic downturn and uncertainty. The growth in exports of US hardwood is driven by regional economic growth and the domestic consumption markets.” The SE Asia market for US hardwood has outperformed other developed markets in 2012 with 24.4 percent increase in total value of all American hardwood products - lumber, logs, veneer, plywood, flooring, dimensions and moulding. US hardwood lumber exports reached US$195.38 million, growing in value by 32 percent compared to 2011. Thus sawn lumber is growing more rapidly than the other products. Logs accounted for US$59.76 million, up 9 percent. Veneer accounted for US$16.11 million, up 9 percent. The veneer industry in China and SEA has been growing rapidly in the past 5 years in parallel to the fast growing veneer slicing and fancy plywood industry to support the demand of furniture industries in the region. Leading the ASEAN imports of American hardwood lumber in 2012 was Vietnam where shipments of sawn lumber amounted to US$130.93 million, an increase of 32 percent. Volume to Vietnam totalled 323,880 cubic metres, an increase of 25 percent making it the largest importer of American hardwood in the ASEAN, since 2005. This can be attributed to expansion of the furniture and flooring and door industries and the capture of overseas exports as well as a growing demand for internal joinery in the residential and hospitality sectors. Hardwood log shipments from the USA to Vietnam were up 12 percent and amounted to US$40.3 million, increasing by 8 percent from 2011, a further indication of the veneer production industry which is gradually developing. Thailand jumped to become the second largest market in SE Asia for American hardwood lumber with exports reaching US$21.22 million an increase of 65 percent, and volume totalling 45,750 cubic metres up 62 percent. The furniture manufacturing industry has recovered from the damage of the massive flooding in 2011, which seriously impacted the production and affected the export

American hardwood lumber shipments to Southeast Asia up 32 percent in 2012

of US hardwood to Thailand. However Indonesia is still the second largest ASEAN market overall for US hardwood products - valued US$ 34.80 million. Sawn lumber was valued US$20.53 million up 14 percent from 2011, and the volume registered 40,771 cubic metres, an increase of 23 percent from 2011. Veneer imports increased by 27 percent reaching US$7.2 million. With log imports from USA of only US$6.04 million dropping by 26 percent it seems that many producers in Indonesia are turning to lumber and veneer as raw material rather than logs. The property market there is booming and is driving demand for wood products such as doors. Malaysia followed Indonesia and Thailand becoming the fourth largest market in ASEAN for US lumber with shipments valued at US$19.4 million, an increase of 33 percent from 2011, and volume totalling 38,084 cubic metres up 50 percent. Despite being rich in rubberwood resources these three countries are gradually turning to increase their supplies of imported timber, which partially accounts for increased of import of US hardwood lumber, veneer and logs. The relatively small market of Singapore has shown growth of 34 percent in value and 60 percent in volume. With the Philippines the two markets were US$6.63 million of US hardwood products in 2012. The hardwood forests of the USA are dominated by Red and White Oak with Tulipwood as the next most common species – one which naturally regenerates with prolific seed production. American White Oak and Tulipwood are the most popular species in SE Asia accounting for over 50 percent of shipments in 2012, whereas in China Red Oak dominated shipments there. However a wide range of other species such as Ash, Cherry, Hickory, Maple, Western Red Alder and Walnut were are also shipped to Asia. n

Sydney, Australia – One of Australia’s leading security door businesses the Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has achieved outstanding results from tests undertaken by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) for its S03 and S06 trellis security doors. Tested against the Australian Standard AS5039-2008 for Security Doors, the S03 and S06 Trellis Doors underwent an anti-jemmy test and a dynamic impact test for security, passing and becoming the only trellis security door products on the Australian market that have been tested against these strict conditions. The two tests were carried out by an accredited NATA testing facility, and are two of the main testing requirements for security doors under the Australian Standards. Commenting on the test results, Principal of ATDC, Mr Jonathan Kaplan said, “The standard is designed to provide consumers with specifications covering the general requirements

ATDC’s S03 and S06 Trellis doors surpasses Australian Standards for Security Testing

and per formance of secur ity doors. Whi lst the standard acknowledges that security doors are not intruder proof, it looks at the screen being strong enough to survive most attempts at forced entry and accordingly to provide the consumer with a certain degree of security. “Our products are put through simulated break in tests to verify their strength and durability, and the results speak for themselves. This recognition is kudos to our company’s excellent manufacturing and high quality product standards for our security doors,” he added. The Anti-Jemmy test simulates an intruder trying to break into a premise using a lever such as a screwdriver to break the lock. The test is extremely stringent with the simulated attack on the door being carried out over a lengthy period of time and with multiple attempts on each of the locking points. The ATDC trellis security door passed this test mainly due to the design of its 3-contact point lock and specially engineered anti-jemmy locking extrusion. The Dynamic Impact test simulates a burglar kicking the security door in an attempt to break through. The test involves swinging a bag laden with 44 kilograms of heavy lead against the security door. The test is carried out five times in succession to see if it can sufficiently impact the security of the door. The ATDC trellis security door passed this test mainly due its specially designed fully framed surround which spreads the load of the impact. Further, the heavy steel mesh infill compliments this strength. The ATDC is an Australian, family owned business led by brothers Jonathan and Richard Kaplan, which has been operating since 1985. It currently supplies Australasia’s most diverse range of precision engineered expanding trellis security doors in steel and aluminium, which are suitable for securing most residential, commercial and industrial applications, and has remained the market leader in this field. n

Seven Tides celebrates Palm Jumeirah building completion milestone

Dubai, UAE – Dubai-based real estate developer Seven Tides, has received the green light to hand over its Asian-inspired resort development to management company Anantara Hotel Resorts & Spa. The Anantara Dubai Palm Jumeirah Resort & Spa has been awarded a Building Completion Certificate (BCC) by Trakhees, the Government of Dubai’s planning and development department. Occupying a prime beachfront position on the crescent of the Palm Jumeirah, The Anantara Dubai Palm Jumeirah Resort & Spa will feature 293 hotel rooms and 456 condominium apartments, and is set to open in Q3 2013. “The BCC is much more than just a piece of paper; it represents a major milestone in the development of this stunning resort and spa complex, and signifies that we are in the final detailed stages of completion, as well as allowing us to begin the process of applying for official operating licenses and permits,” said Abdulla Bin Sulayem, CEO, Seven Tides. In a first for the UAE’s diverse hospitality sector, the resort will offer 18 stilted ‘over water’ villas and 15 absolute beachfront suites - including three 206-square-metre royal beach pool villas where 50 percent of the rooms in total boast direct water access from their balconies. With Asian-style pointed roofs, exposed vaulted ceilings and an al fresco ambiance, the decor and layout are reminiscent of upmarket hideaway resorts found in the Maldives and Thailand. “This is yet another example of Seven Tides’ ability to conceptualise, develop and deliver true mixed-use concepts to the market. The success of existing projects such as Oceana, which has become a preferred beachfront residential destination, and the landmark hotel, residence and office product available under the Ibn Battuta Gate banner, have set the benchmark for multi-asset class developments in the emirate,” said Bin Sulayem. n

The Stairs Villa Hotel envisioned by Philippe Starck comes to the neighbourhood of Seminyak, Bali

Seminyak, Bali – Passionate global citizens with up-market tastes and assets will have a new landmark address to congregate in a communal space in the South Seas. The Stairs Villa Hotel, envisioned by Philippe Starck, is set to break ground in 2013 in the Petitenget neighbourhood of Seminyak, Bali. Taking direction from the vision of vibrant streets across the world coming together in a monolithic 65-foot-wide stairway, The Stairs is the first Starck fully-designed villa hotel in Asia. The project features a private village of 12 limited-edition villas with signature floor-to-roof glass facades by internationally-acclaimed artists JonOne; and public areas with a café patisserie, restaurant, bar lounge, boutique, mezzanine bibliothèque, signature spa, and workout facilities. “The Stairs, without a doubt, shall become the boiling bucket of energy, activity, and intelligence of Bali, and perhaps more,” described Philippe Starck, the brainchild behind the design concept of The Stairs. He continued: “The Stairs does not follow any type of trend in decoration and architecture; it is self-designed, just following the beauty of the Balinese soul and the future of the next centres of the world.” The Stairs is a project of DeCiazini Group, a French privately-held investment, development and management firm with its pulse on leading hospitality, F&B, and design-related initiatives. “The Stairs invites a dialogue between global citizens with upmarket sensibilities – a new sense of luxurious casualness in a world where both rarely convene,” said Nicolas Panzani, president director of the DeCiazini Group. Co-founders Nicolas Panzani, Noel Ciabrini and Hugo Revuelta, along with renowned designer Philippe Starck, share the same philosophy and passionate goal in launching The Stairs in Bali. The landmark villa hotel will create an indelible portrait of a communal space in the Petitenget neighbourhood of Seminyak. n

BEX Asia to explore the future wave of green buildings

Green buildings are on a rise to be a mainstay in Southeast Asia and proving their value at BEX Asia.

Singapore – Sustainability has not only changed the way we design and construct buildings, but it has also impacted us in the way we live, work and play. BEX Asia addresses these trends by showcasing green solutions such as building materials, building completion, building structures, energy management systems, HVAC, energy efficient lighting, green interiors, skyrise landscaping and many more. It offers a timely, conducive platform for green building industry leaders and market players to network, exchange ideas, discover the latest innovations and boost business prospects. As an event that embraces the green, sustainable message, it aims to not only serve business intentions, but also ensure that the community – including its exhibitors and visitors play their part in “walking the talk”. Visitors will experience a refreshed look at BEX Asia this year, as the booths are constructed with recyclable materials, and exhibitors are encouraged to design their booths using their own green products. Exhibitors will be recognised for their green efforts in their booth design, and awarded the Green Space Award. To inspire and engage the community to embrace sustainability, BEX Asia has also launched a Facebook Photo Contest, to encourage the community to creatively capture green design and sustainable living in 3 photo categories: Environment/Landscape, Green Architecture/Buildings and People. Sustainability has changed business practices in Southeast Asia greatly. Three companies in Singapore have made it to the exclusive Global 100 list, which consists of the world’s most sustainable companies. The companies are City Developments Limited (CDL), CapitaLand and StarHub. In Singapore, the building sector is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emission. Therefore, developers and businesses are increasingly aware of the need to not just implement sustainable business practices, but also to influence their stakeholders. Singapore is among the leading cities in skyrise greening with over 50 hectares of rooftop greenery in public and private buildings. The Housing Development Board has also come up with labour saving technology like the Prefabricated Extensive Greening roof system, which allows plants to thrive without irrigation and uses lightweight plastic trays which are easy to install. Other countries in the region are also expected to invest in the green movement. In Thailand, USD13 billion may be needed over two decades by the energy efficiency and green construction sector. This conclusion comes after a report on energy efficiency spending between 2003 and 2011. Currently the sector is anticipating the positive effect of energy efficiency, green building standards and certification which will drive growth in the industry. Also the Philippines is positioning itself as the regional hub of multinational corporations (MNCs), and the demand for environment-friendly smart buildings is gaining traction. A third of MNCs want their local headquarters in an “intelligent,” eco-friendly skyscraper. This was revealed by architects, urban planners, a real estate expert and a consultant for environment sustainable structures. While in Malaysia, the government is currently working on a plan to convert all light bulbs in Government buildings to energy-saving bulbs. The Malaysian Government spends RM2.7 billion a year on energy costs, and this does not include the electricity bill for statutory bodies. It is expected that the Government can save an estimated of at least RM800mil across the board if they switched to LED lighting. Although the role of policymakers and government officers is central in driving the building and construction industry to design and develop green buildings, it is a three prong approach – where government, building professionals and the community, all play an integral part. All this and more will be discussed at the International Green Building Conference (IGBC) 2013, held in conjunction with BEX Asia 2013 on the 11-13 September 2013 at the Marina Bay Sands, and is supported by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC). BCA will also unveil the 3rd Green Building Masterplan, launch new Green Mark Schemes and latest updates on Green Mark at IGBC 2013. For more information, visit www.bex-asia.com. n

Singapore – New data centre operators now have more reason to go green with the official launch of the BCA-IDA Green Mark for New Data Centres scheme at the Green Data Centre Forum 2013, held at Mapletree Business City on 14 March 2013. Jointly developed by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and Infocomm Development Authority (IDA), this new category is a new addition to the BCA-IDA Green Mark Scheme first launched in October 2012.  Claimed to be the first of its kind in Asia, the BCA-IDA Green Mark for New Data Centres encourages new data centres to adopt energy-efficient design, technologies and systems in the planning and design phase. The scheme relies on energy modelling to assess the performance of a proposed data centre design. Key criteria of assessment include energy efficiency, water efficiency, sustainable construction and management, indoor environment quality and other green features. The data centres are rated according to Green Mark Platinum, GoldPLUS, Gold or Certified ratings. Abbott Laboratories Singapore is the first recipient of the BCA-IDA Green Mark Award for New Data Centres. The data centre was rated Green Mark Gold for its efforts to introduce efficient design strategies such as the use of modular design which optimises performance through addressing phases in usage demand, the selection of energy efficient IT equipment and the deployment of virtualisation technology. Abbott’s experience serves to underline how data centres can potentially realise significant cost savings by targeting energy efficiency in design. When fully operational, Abbott’s data centre is expected to achieve energy savings of more than one million kilowatt hours annually.  Congratulating the winner, Dr John Keung, Chief Executive Officer of BCA, said, “The data centre market is set to grow rapidly in the next few years and this represents many opportunities for companies to step forward not only to do their part for the environment, but also to realise cost savings for their business. Aside from cost savings, green data centres may also open up market opportunities through increased credibility and recognition by clients for their environment-friendly initiatives. Going green is a win-win solution and I hope that more data centre owners will be inspired by our inaugural award winners and come onboard the scheme.” Singapore’s total commercial data centre capacity is forecast to rise by 51 percent to 336,900 square metres by 2015, from 222,829 square metres, according to a 2010 Broadgroup report. There are currently more than 50 data centres in Singapore, of which 20 are large data centres. A typical large data centre in Singapore is estimated to consume energy equivalent to 10,000 households, which potentially offers significant cost savings for a Green Mark-certified data centre. Mr Leong Keng Thai, Deputy Chief Executive & Director-General (Telecoms & Post) of IDA said, “Data Centres can improve their cost-competitiveness by reducing overall energy use, as the energy bill makes up a significant portion of their operating budget. Thus, it makes good business sense for data centres to go green and be energy-efficient.  We encourage data centres to strive to attain the BCA-IDA Green Mark. Those who can achieve the highest rating under this Green Mark can potentially reap energy savings of at least 30 percent.”

Three data centres - Credit Suisse Asia Pacific Regional Data Centre (Platinum award), Equinix SG2 Data Centre (GoldPLUS award) and Singapore Tourism Board Data Centre (Gold award) were presented with the BCA-IDA Green Mark Awards for Existing Data Centres today by BCA’s Chairman, Mr Quek See Tiat. These data centres, including Abbott Laboratories Singapore, the inaugural winner of the BCA-IDA Green Mark for New Data Centres category, are the pioneer batch of data centres to be formally recognised under the scheme. The BCA-IDA Green Mark for Data Centres is the result of a two-year collaborative effort between BCA and IDA, with supporting partners from Energy Research Institute@Nanyang Technological University (ERI@N) and Lawrence Berkeley National Labs (LBLN) in the United States. It is an extension of the successful BCA Green Mark for buildings scheme launched in 2005. n

HDB aims to make Punggol Town zero-energy

DuPont Industrial Biosciences adds two new partners in growing Sorona® Fibre business

S i n g a p o r e – T h e H o u s i n g & D e v e l o p m e n t B o a r d ( H D B ) h a s awarded a tender to Sunseap, a solar system developer, to lease three mega-watt-peak (MWp) solar photovoltaic (PV) systems for another 80 HDB residential blocks in Punggol Eco-Town. This tender attracted keen competition from the industry with a total of 13 bidders, compared to the first Solar Leasing project in 2011, which only garnered 3 bids. U n d e r t h e s o l a r l e a s i n g model, Sunseap will design, finance, install, operate and maintain the solar PV systems. Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council will enter into a service agreement with Sunseap to pay for the solar power generated and consumed, at a preferential rate of up to 5 percent discount off the retail electricity tariff rate. The expertise of private enterprises can be harnessed to maximise solar generation without additional cost to the Town Council. The increased competition in the local market and cheaper prices of solar PV cells globally has have resulted in a lower government capital outlay. The Government funds a small percentage of the initial capital outlay as an incentive to kick start the solar leasing programme. The initial capital outlay provided to the contractors is necessary as the current payback for solar remains long (about 20 years). It helps to bridge the grid parity gap, so that the Town Councils need not pay higher electricity tariff rates compared to current retail tariff. For this tender, the system cost for a total of 3 MWp is $8.84 million and the system cost payable by HDB is about $645,000. In comparison, the system cost for a 2 MWp system in the first tender was $10.9 million, of which $3.28 million was the upfront cost payable from HDB. It can be seen that solar energy is becoming an increasingly viable source of sustainable energy solution in creating a better living environment. Through the expansion of the solar PV installations, energy usage can be optimised with lower usage of power from the grid, in turn reducing carbon emissions in the long term. The solar power generated will be used to power services in common areas such as lifts, corridors, staircase lightings and water pumps. With this second Solar Leasing project, HDB moves a step closer

Shanghai, China – DuPont Industrial Biosciences announced at Domotex Asia/ChinaFloor the addition of two new carpet manufacturers to its growing Sorona® fibre value chain, expanding its presence in the Asia Pacific market.  Jiangxi Huateng Carpet Industrial Park Co., Ltd. (CTTCC), a n d We i h a i S h a n h u a C a r p e t G r o u p Co., Ltd., both leaders in commercial carpet design and manufacturing, have integrated DuPont™ Sorona® renewably

to the aim of developing Punggol Eco-Town as a net zero energy town for these common services by 2016. Building solar capabilities in solar PV technology is key to HDB’s sustainable development efforts, and it will provide an alternative and renewable energy source for Singapore. The solar leasing model is the latest enhancement to HDB’s solar capability building programme and a continuation of the HDB’s ongoing efforts to test-bed solar energy to promote sustainable development. Dr Cheong Koon Hean, Chief Executive Officer of HDB, said, “Punggol, as Singapore’s first Eco-town, serves as a ‘ living laboratory ’ to test new ideas and technologies in sustainable development. The expansion of our solar PV installations through solar leasing is in line with the second thrust of HDB’s Roadmap to Better Living in HDB Towns – to develop ‘Sustainable Towns’. Solar technology has been given an extra boost with our largest tender ever under the Solar Capability Building Programme which aims to test-bed solar PV technology in 200 public housing blocks by 2015. The scheme will help enhance the industry ’s capabilities and test the feasibility of implementing solar technology on a wider scale when it becomes more cost effective.” Installation works for the second phase is scheduled to complete by 2014. HDB is currently the largest stakeholder in the installation of solar PV system in Singapore. To date, HDB has committed to a total of $15 million for the installation of Solar PV systems for 175 blocks of flats, which is equivalent to powering the energy needs of 1,800 4-room flats for a year. n

Salvador de Bahia, Brazil – Neoenergia and Odebrecht Energia began the deployment of the solar power plant at the Arena Pernambuco soccer stadium, a project that is part of the Research and Development (R&D) programme of the three distributors of the Neoenergia Group; Celpe (state of Pernambuco), Coelba (state of Bahia) and Cosern (state of Rio Grande do Norte). With 1 MWp of installed capacity, equivalent to the average consumption of 6000 Brazilians, the solar plant will cost about 10 million Brazilian Reals, being 9 million Brazilian Reals invested by Neoenergia, through the R&D stategy project of Aneel, and 1.2 million Brazilian Reals invested by Odebrecht Energia, with completion scheduled for June 2013. Located in an area of 14.5 thousand square metres, within the Arena area, the installation of the solar plant is part of the Strategic Project for Research and Development – “Technical and Commercial Arrangements for Insertion of Solar Photovoltaic Generation in the Brazilian Energy Matrix” launched in August 2011 by the National Agency of Electric Energy (ANEEL). Besides the plant, the project includes other research and development investments totaling 24.5 million Brazilian Reals. The photovoltaic solar panels, which make part of the system, capture the light emitted by the sun and transform it into electricity with the aid of an inverter to convert the energy traditionally used in industries and homes. At this point, the produced energy is able to be delivered to the electrical system of the stadium or the conventional distribution network. Besides the usage of a renewable energy source, solar generation systems reduce transmission and distribution line losses, since energy is consumed at the place where it is produced. The deployment and operation of the plant will not result

Munich, Germany – Wacker Chemie AG is strengthening its presence in the USA by bringing a new technical centre for carpet applications on stream in Dalton, Georgia. It offers lab facilities for developing and testing polymeric binders for the carpet industry. At the same time, the WACKER ACADEMY, the Group’s international training centre, is opening a local branch at the Dalton site. Wacker is thus meeting the growing demand for high-quality VAE dispersions for carpet applications in the region, and improving its local expertise in research, development, applications support and customer service. Wacker’s new technical centre, based in Dalton, Georgia, is focused on developing new formulations with vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer (VAE) dispersions, and meeting the local demands of customers in the carpet industry. VAE dispersions of the VINNAPAS® brand are increasingly being used in place of traditional latexes as binders for bonding carpet backing. “Our aim is to support our customers in the carpet industry by realising their individual requirements directly on the spot, and to develop and test innovative VAE binder applications together with them,” explained Peter Summo, head of the dispersions business at WACKER POLYMERS. “Our new technical centre in Dalton will greatly improve the support we give our customers in developing new product solutions.” Besides research and applications labs, the facility also houses a local branch of the WACKER ACADEMY, the Group’s own training and education centre. The seminar programme is tailored to the specific needs of the carpet industry. The specially equipped training lab also allows participants to perform extensive practical exercises. In addition to the established US training centres in Adrian (MI) and Allentown (PA), WACKER ACADEMY sites have already opened in Burghausen (Germany), Moscow (Russia), Beijing (China), Seoul (South Korea), Mumbai (India), Sao Paulo (Brazil), Singapore, Dubai (UAE) and Mexico City (Mexico). n

with the architects Foster + Partners to develop an acoustic solution for the environment to fit within these concrete canopies, reminiscent of a Bedouin tent. The manufacturer designed and supplied 12,000 square metres of Tubeline, a curved metal linear ceiling system, complete with acoustic grey insulation to blend with the concrete soffit. Andrew Jackson, director at SAS International commented: “Balancing function with aesthetics is one of the biggest demands when consider ing products for transportation hubs. The c h o i ce o f m ate r i a l s a n d i n n ovat i ve products all have a part to play in providing not only a distinct finish to enhance the vision, but also an environment that is

comfortable for the volumes of people in transit, with acoustic control addressed.” The company also manufactured curved lighting grilles, 4,000 square metres of bespoke triangular ceiling panels and 12,000 metres of its System 700 linear slat ceiling system. Installed within a triangular geometric grid ceiling system, the linear slats of System 700 provide a finish of neat architectural lines within the baggage claim area. The location allows the airport to grow by 6 percent per annum for the next twenty-five years, increasing capacity from 3 million to 12.8 million passengers per annum by 2030. The airport was also winner of the transport category of the Cityscape Architectural Review Awards. n

Energy Dream Center is a lighthouse project on energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and sustainability in building design.

W ith the Energy Dream Center, the Seoul metropolitan government realised its goal to construct a centre for renewable energy. With a floor space of 3,500 square metres,

the zero energy building houses exhibitions and offers a wide range of information related to the field of renewable energy. Headed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, an interdisciplinary team designed the building and accompanied the construction. The biggest challenge faced by the team of scientists, engineers and architects was to create a harmonious concept which combines energy savings and efficiency with architecture and functionality. What resulted is a flagship project which demonstrates applications of the latest technologies and the successful use of renewable energies.

“Build us a zero energy building!” were the words spoken by the Mayor of Seoul to the Director of Fraunhofer ISE, Prof. Eicke R. Weber, during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in the area of “Energy Saving & Energy Efficiency”. The City of Seoul provided the plot of land for the building site which is located in World Cup Park, a popular recreational area in Seoul. Fraunhofer ISE coordinated an interdisciplinary team made up of German and South Korean project partners. “The goal of all participants was to develop a building that exemplifies renewable energy in form and function,” said Dr.-Ing. Jan Wienold, project leader at Fraunhofer ISE. As a zero energy building, the Energy Dream Center is to generate as much energy annually as it consumes over the year. The total energy needs must be met by renewable energy technologies implemented on and in the building.

Holistic approach To realise such a cooperative project in Korea presented particular challenges. “In Germany and South Korea, the planning and construction processes function in various ways. Both countries also have entirely different strategies for using resources and energy,” said Dr Wienold. It took several years to develop the final concept, which was created using a holistic approach. The process resulted in the best possible combination of design concept and technological solution. To determine the thermal and daylight building performance, the project partners carried out comprehensive building simulations. Multiple calculations were performed to determine properties such as thermal bridges. As a result, the optimal combination of building envelope and technical systems was determined.

Architectural concept The architectural concept used is based on a square ground plan. The three-storey building structure extends upwards and outwards conically at a 45 degree rotation and is topped off by a square roof. Wedge-shaped roof projections are mounted along the façades at an upward tilt – giving the effect of wings. These protrusions shield the entrance area from the elements as well as provide fixed solar protection for the window glazing. Strict geometrical angles also characterise the façades. Because the underground at the site is not capable of bearing weight, the building is supported by piles which are mounted on a reinforced concrete base plate. The angular projection roofs also have a functional role in stabilizing the building.

Low-Energy / Zero-Energy BuildingsGREENBUILDINGS

Energy and technical concepts The first priority was to conserve energy using passive energy measures. In order to reduce the energy demand to a minimum, the building envelope was designed according to passive house standards. The reinforced massive ceilings serve as thermal storage to balance out the peak cooling loads. The well-designed architecture supplies good daylighting throughout the building, for example, by means of a square-shaped central atrium. The efficient electrical lighting is provided by LEDs and controlled by light sensors.

The entire concept covering the energy and the technical aspects is customised for the comfort of the building occupants as well as for the climatic and technical boundary conditions in South Korea. Complementing the role of the building envelope, the ventilation system ensures both controlled heat in the winter and controlled humidity and cooling in the summer. The efficient building services are mainly based on earth probes, which provide the radiant cooling system with cold in summer and which serve as a heat source for the heat pump throughout the year. In addition to this, a ventilation system with two-step heat recovery and evaporative cooling and a turbo compression chiller for dehumidification are installed. By applying these collective measures, the heating and cooling energy consumption of this building is 70 percent less than the standard consumption for South Korean buildings.

Energy supplyThe remaining annual energy demand of the Energy Dream Center is supplied by renewable energy sources. In addition to geothermal energy for supplying heating and cooling, grid-connected photovoltaic systems on the roof, the overhangs and in a small field supply the total amount of electricity required (about 280,000 kWh/year). The result is a building with zero net energy consumption and zero carbon emissions in an annual balance – namely a Net Zero Energy Building. It fulfills the passive house standards and the Korean standards: Korean Green Building Certification KGBC and the Building Energy Efficiency Label. To analyse the implemented energy concept and the building performance in real operation, Fraunhofer ISE is planning to carry out long-term monitoring.

expressways, and establishes itself as not only a part of the vibrant urban fabric, but an integral part of community and residential enclave,” said Mr Chee Huang.

The Sports Hub will incorporate several new facilities for all major sports: a new 55,000-capacity National Stadium with a retractable roof and comfort cooling for spectators; a 3,000-capacity indoor Aquatic Centre, expandable to 6,000-capacity for specific events that meets world tournament standards; a 3,000-capacity Multi-purpose Indoor Arena which will be scalable, modular and flexible in layout; a Water Sports Centre to enhance sports offerings in the Kallang Basin; 41,000 square metres of commercial space for leisure, shopping and dining activities; a Sports Information and Resource Centre (SIRC), comprising a library, a museum and an exhibition centre; Sports Promenade and Community areas; and the existing 12,000-capacity Singapore Indoor Stadium featuring an exciting line-up of vibrant entertainment.

“The spectacle of the Singapore Sports Hub also lies in how eight quality sports, recreation, community and lifestyle venues integrate seamlessly with the stadium, to create a truly exciting destination for all. Set to become a natural choice for global and local sports industries and enthusiasts, one of the key draws is Sports Hub’s offerings of world-class sports facilities, coupled with its dynamic sporting events and programming. Its other X-factor lies in its attractive leisure and community appeal, with its array of new public spaces. One of the main features is the Sports Promenade – a unique one-kilometre shaded and sheltered streetscape that wraps around the National Stadium linking to various key destinations and green spaces within the hub. Alongside the numerous community areas, there are also attractions such as retail, office, sports museum and library, leisure water as well as a range of community sports venues

T he new Singapore Sports Hub, designed by Arup and DP Architects, is taking shape quickly, even though it is far from complete. The nearly S$1.3 billion development is on budget

and on schedule to see it open in 2014. When completed, the Sports Hub will be the largest and most exciting sports, entertainment and lifestyle destination in Singapore and maybe one of the most spectacular sports facilities worldwide.

“The masterplan and design of the Sports Hub embodies monumental aspirations as well as vital humanistic and ecological spirit as an integrated sports, entertainment and lifestyle hub that will make it unique and identifiable as a Singapore icon,” said Mr Seah Chee Huang of DP Architects.

The new Sports Hub is being built on a 35-hectare site in Kallang, which is also the original site of the National Stadium, which was demolished in 2010. Unlike the old stadium, the new Sports Hub is state of the art and much more accessible to everyone. It is designed within a natural landscape that is linked to an island-wide park connector system, making it accessible to the public at all times.

“The Sports Hub masterplan also capitalises on the prized asset of a strategic location next to the city, along the extensive waterfront setting of the Kallang Basin. With this distinctive location, the new Sports Hub is well connected to the MRT network as well as major

Construction on the ultra-thin 310 metres wide steel dome roof is currently underway and is taking shape at the site.

The dome roof will be juxtaposed against the inverted ‘peaked’ roof of the Singapore Indoor Stadium to create one of Singapore’s most impressive skylines. The dome will provide shade and shelter to the

55,000-seat stadium and surrounding non-ticketed community spaces and claims to be the only stadium in the world, custom-built to host football, rugby, cricket and athletic events in one venue.

“The National Stadium will be a state-of-the-art sports venue, air-cooled, designed with highly flexible seating configurations and a retractable roof, to hold an array of sporting events. Uniquely orientated towards the waterfront and the city skyline, the form will give Sports Hub a powerful identity, alongside the iconic silhouette of the existing Singapore Indoor Stadium,” said Mr Chee Huang.

Arup, which provided both design and engineering services for the sports venue, said that the design of the stadium is largely influenced by the tropical climate and a lot of passive design measures have been used to naturally ventilate the stadium.

Clive Lewis, Arup’s lead Sports Venue Designer for the Singapore Sports Hub said: “The tropical climate in Singapore poses a challenge in the design of the National Stadium. People will only enjoy the stadium experience if the environmental conditions are right. We

wanted to keep the rain and heat out, but we also wanted it to be an open and dynamic space. After extensive research into comfor t expec tat ions and energy in use, we realised that a naturally ventilated stadium with localised cooling gave us the best solution for

the local climate in Singapore. By incorporating a moving roof, the stadium will be further protected from the harsh climatic conditions, allowing events to be hosted during the hottest parts of the day.”

Arup used an energy-efficient solution to balance the intermittent energy demands of the stadium with the everyday energy demands of the surrounding buildings and to explore the benefits of integrating the systems serving both. The final design solution integrates thermal storage tanks into the design which are pre-cooled before an event and allow for the peak demands of the stadium seating to be met from the same plant that provides the everyday cooling to the adjacent office, retail, indoor arena and aquatics centre.

The additional energy required to switch on the bowl cooling for a stadium event will be offset by energy harnessed throughout the year from a large photovoltaic array meaning that the operation of the bowl cooling to the stadium will have a zero carbon impact on the environment.

To the moving roof, Arup wanted a lightweight cladding system that provided shade to the seating bowl and reduced solar gain. At the same time, they wanted the moving roof to appear translucent and to create a naturally lit event space during the day. A multi-layer ETFE pillow was chosen as it met the design requirements and provided Arup with the opportunity to illuminate the moving roof at night. With an area of 20,000 square metres, the moving roof is set to become one of the largest addressable LED screens in the world.

The architectural design and engineering of this structure was done using advanced parametric modeling software, as well as in-house software that Arup developed specifically for the project. This optimised information exchange greatly among the architects, engineers and contractors. The result is a super efficient shell dome structure, with a total steel weight of 8,057 metric tons.

The SportsHub Consortium’s dedication to achieving a sustainable design for the stadium and the Sports Hub precinct was recognised with the Green Mark GoldPLUS status.

L ike many cities in China, Hangzhou is undergoing rapid urban change. While the city centre had historically

developed around the West Lake area, opportunities for industry and commerce have shifted the city’s expansion towards the Qian Tang riverfront. New construction has tripled the city’s size in the past 10 years leaving behind a modern architectural fabric that is powerful in scale, yet still in need of public place making.

NBBJ, in collaboration and partnership with CCDI, have designed the Hangzhou Sports Park: A vibrant, pedestrian-centric sports and recreation development located in the midst of Hangzhou’s new urban environment. Situated on the Qian Tang riverfront opposite of the new Central Business District, and encompassing a site of approximately 400,000 square metres, the sports park is seen as an opportunity for creating picturesque and sustainable public spaces that are often elusive in the newly constructed urbanism of China. This new place making will be accomplished while intelligently balancing the long-term commercial viability of the sports development.

Robert Mankin AIA, LEED AP, principal and sports practice director at NBBJ, noted: “This is a transformational project that redefines sustainable design excellence in sports facilities throughout Asia. It changes the game, and I applaud the City of Hangzhou for taking this important step.”

Hu Xiaoming, design director of CCDI’s Sports Division, emphasized the role the sports park has taken within the context of Hangzhou’s urban expansion. “The issue is not about how to sustain a large stadium commercially between games, but is about how a massive stadium can lead a 2 million-s q u a re - m e t re m i xe d - u s e co m m e rc i a l program in a green park setting, form a future urban centre, and redefine a new lifestyle. Our design provides what is exactly needed to support that agenda,” he said.

Drawing conceptually from the geometries of the nearby river delta, the flowing forms of the landscape planning are the principal means of organising the site, defining circulation and concentrating activities. The site is designed to create a seamless pedestrian experience that weaves together sports and commercial programs while forming a clear path of circulation between two planned major transportation hubs on the east and west ends of the site.

The site is composed of three layers of activity: An above-grade platform defines the sports boulevard, which links together programs such as the main stadium and tennis tournament facilities. On the ground level, pathways, gardens and plazas form a network of public recreation activities designed for alternative and extreme sports. Sunken spaces and courtyards lead to an extensive below-grade retail facility containing boutique stores, restaurants and a multiplex cinema.

The primary architectural element on the site is the 80,000-seat Main Stadium. The Olympic-sized facility will be the premier international sports venue for the city of Hangzhou, and is currently the largest stadium planned for construction in China for the next 10 years. The stadium’s exterior shell geometry draws from the serene flora iconography found on the banks of Hangzhou’s West Lake in order to create a powerful and unique image along the fast-growing Qian Tang riverfront. The stadium bowl program and structure are coordinated with the exterior shell to create a unique concourse and circulation experience. On the north end of the stadium, the seating bowl opens to reveal a view to the Yangtze riverfront, connecting the sporting events to the new CBD of Hangzhou.

L AVA, the LABORATORY FOR VISIONARY ARCHITECTURE, and DESIGNSPORT collaborated with local Ethiopian firm

JDAW to win the international architecture competition for a national stadium and sports village, held by the Federal Sport Commission, Ethiopia.

Chris Bosse, LAVA director, said: “We have gone back to the very origin of stadium design with a sunken arena surrounded by grandstands formed from excavated material. This man-made crater is a clever

remodelling of the existing terrain and generates ef f ic ient spaces, opt imises environmental per formance, minimses construction costs and integrates facilities within the existing landscape.”

Addis architect Daniel Assefa and director of JDAW said: “The design references Ethiopia’s world-famous excavated architecture – centuries-old rock churches, dwellings and cisterns. We see the sports city as a natural extension to this heritage, one that will draw many more visitors to our beautiful country.”

The Massob, an Ethiopian communal serving basket made from woven grass, inspired the façade material that wraps the stadium. Daniel also noted: “The form of the stadium structure seen from the top view also recalls coffee beans, the main source of income in Ethiopia and the ‘Mother womb’, the skeleton of one of the first humans, Lucy, which is about 3.2 million years old.”

The roof of the stadium, an intelligent membrane, appears like a cloud on the hor izon of the vast Ethiopian sk y, a

The masterplan by the JDAW/DESIGNSPORT/LAVA CONSORTIUM includes the IOC-standard stadium for FIFA matches, athletics events, concerts, religious and national festivals; and a sports village comprising indoor and outdoor aquat ic centres, outdoor pitches, sports halls and arenas, dormitories and the headquarters for the Federal Sport Commission. Hospitality, retail and commercial zones will ensure that the precinct is vibrant throughout the year.

Tectonic structures and movement are the underlying concept for the masterplan. The breathtaking beauty of the surrounding Entoto Hills is the backdrop to a design that responds to the volcanic geology of the region. Gently undulating urban parkland follows the lines of the crater and is
