Aiport could be ‘open for business’ Longtime aviation advocate George Miller — who was introduced by Chris Langhaugh, and whose services were engaged by Doug Beech of Century 21 — presented a bright new future for Merritt at Tueday’s council meeting. He envisions a situation where the airport could ‘get out of the doldrums & be open for business’. But, he says, there’s a long way to go. Mr. Miller says that the first step would not be to do a master plan study (something City Council earlier this year earmarked $25,000 to do), but to set up an airport ad- visory committee to set out a governance model, hire an airport manager, and find an ‘anchor tenant’. And they’ve got a lead on an investor who might be interested in taking on the project & making a major investment, partly because of its perfect lo- cation, and the area’s growing tourism & future development. He also believes the project could re- ceive major grants because of the Merritt airport’s major deficiencies: lack of fenc- ing, unkemptness, weeds growing on the runway. Having landed at the airport earli- er in the week, Mr. Miller said he was “shocked” at its state: its lack of anyone on the ground to talk to, direct access, washroom facilities, coffee or snacks, lights, or security. Food for thought for Council. Mr. Mill- er believes the Merritt Saunders Airport could be of considerable economic value & give us the ability to develop an un- til-now-unconsidered aviation industry. Canada Day celebrations

Monday, July 1, starting at 8am with the Knights of Columbus breakfast at the Civic Centre. Games & events take place 10am-1pm at Rotary Park: games, vendors, dem-os, displays, smart step, fire dept, petting zoo, pony rides, speeches, Canada Day cake, NV Community Band, and more. Aiport could be ‘open for business’

Longtime aviation advocate George Miller — who was introduced by Chris Langhaugh, and whose services were engaged by Doug Beech of Century 21 — presented a bright new future for Merritt at Tueday’s council meeting. He envisions a situation where the airport could ‘get out of the doldrums & be open for business’. But, he says, there’s a long way to go.

Mr. Miller says that the first step would not be to do a master plan study (something City Council earlier this year earmarked $25,000 to do), but to set up an airport ad-visory committee to set out a governance model, hire an airport manager, and find an ‘anchor tenant’. And they’ve got a lead on an investor who might be interested in taking on the project & making a major investment, partly because of its perfect lo-cation, and the area’s growing tourism & future development.

He also believes the project could re-ceive major grants because of the Merritt airport’s major deficiencies: lack of fenc-ing, unkemptness, weeds growing on the runway.

Having landed at the airport earli-er in the week, Mr. Miller said he was “shocked” at its state: its lack of anyone on the ground to talk to, direct access, washroom facilities, coffee or snacks, lights, or security.

Food for thought for Council. Mr. Mill-er believes the Merritt Saunders Airport could be of considerable economic value & give us the ability to develop an un-til-now-unconsidered aviation industry.

Rezoning for 4010 Walters St. passed

Citing the housing crisis in Merritt, Council granted the developer of the 75-unit apartment building proposed for 4010 Walters St. the rezoning & OCP amendment he was seeking, Tuesday af-ter the public hearing. Now that he’s past those posts, it’s on to the development permit stage.
