Explain what you think the term “organic compound” means.
According to Merriam-Webster(1) : of, relating to, or derived from living organisms
Meaning: It is either living or once was living

Many labels in the grocery store – means. . .
It is grown with the use of feed or fertilizer of plant or animal origin. They do not use chemically formulated fertilizers, growth stimulants, antibiotics, or pesticides.
Organic Compounds are compounds that contain carbon (element) and other atoms. (write in center of foldable)
All living things contain organic compounds. (write under definition)
It must have carbon and at least one of the following elements:
~ Hydrogen ~ Oxygen~ Phosphorous ~ Sulfur~ Nitrogen
*There are exceptions – example: Carbon Dioxide. Contains carbon but is not part of a living organism. (Write Under definition in foldable)
*Must have C (Carbon)
and at least one…H (Hydrogen O (Oxygen)
P (Phosphorus)
S (Sulfur)
N (nitrogen)
CO2
H2O
C6H12O6
-All are formulas
-All are compounds
-All contain elements
-All contain atoms
-All have oxygen
